MLK Version of Virtual Quilt Weekend

For those who haven't participated in VQ before, we post on this thread what we're working on (pictures too if possible) and encourage each other. So join us and share what you're working on.

Neesie 01-17-2014 07:32 AM

I'm trying to finish up a couple of twin-sized, I started several months ago. 'Trying' because I guess I just haven't really been in much of a sewing mood, lately . . . and keep getting side-tracked.

LTeachergeorge 01-17-2014 07:40 AM

I'll join you when I can! Got a lot going on this week-end, but Monday looks free -- yea!! Just got one of my UFO's ready for the LAer. Now to dig out another one. LOL

quiltstringz 01-17-2014 08:46 AM

Wish I could make it but am working Sat, company on Sun and a friend who has a quilt shop invited me to the BIG sale at United Notions/Moda on Mon.

cannyquilter 01-17-2014 03:00 PM

I have lots on Saturday and Sunday but plan to quilt on Monday so will check in when I can.

I am making a Christmas throw. Made two small quilts to stand Christmas tree on for my DD and DS but miscalculated amount needed so decided to make a throw hopefully I can complete it by Christmas

Raggiemom 01-17-2014 03:05 PM

Neesie, Teacher, Cannyquilter---glad you're joining me! I was starting to feel lonely :) Quiltstringz, enjoy the sale, that sounds like fun.

I worked on 3 prayer shawls today. One is done, the other two just need the binding done on them so they will be finished tomorrow. I'm done for the night, guess I'll spend some time with the cats and husband. See you in the morning!

cindynvb 01-17-2014 03:17 PM

I wish I was sewing, babysitting my toddler granddaughter, so I'm reading all the posts here while she plays. Maybe I can find some hand sewing to do instead.

retiredteacher09 01-17-2014 04:11 PM

I want to finish 3 tote bags for a charity, cut more material from my mother-in-laws' stash for 5 quilt kits, and finish a top using 3 1/2 and 4 inch squares and sashing(haven't decided on final size yet.)

i also need need to clean in my sewing area!

I'll join you this weekend. It's supposed to be snowy and cold the next few days and I do not have plans to go anywhere! :p Going to turn up the heat, layer on the clothes, make some hot chocolate and quilt away the next 4 days!

Nan - Indiana

AngeliaNR 01-17-2014 04:32 PM

I finished my wool quilt today--Yay! I'm going to start a falling charms for one of my aunts and continue work on a string quilt for another aunt.

ragquilter 01-17-2014 04:33 PM

I am working on a pink and purple Hello Kitty rag quilt. I had all the squares made and sewn together but when I started sewing the squares into rows I didn't like the middle. I found a flannel sheet at GW that is perfect for the middle so I am taking all the squares apart and replacing the middle. I have really been putting off doing this because I have to iron (yuck!) the pieces after I unsew them. I need to get it finished as it is sold and I promised it by Feb.6. So this will be a pink and purple weekend for me so I can get this to the clipping department (daughter).

nancia 01-17-2014 10:10 PM

Dh leaves at noon for Malta so i actually might could join you! Will check in to see how it's going. Have binding, blocks, and quilt tops to make so I'm set for anything!

GailG 01-18-2014 05:24 AM

I'll be here also. I've started a chevron QOV for my godchild on the occasion of his 50th birthday (already passed). He served 16 years with the Air Force and saw action in the Gulf War. I don't think my QOV will be an "official" one because I read yesterday that QsOV cannot use SITD for quilting, which is what I plan on doing. I'm not sure what the reasoning would be for that but, anyway, it will be HIS QOV. Regardless, that's what I will be tending to this weekend. Lots more of the HSTs to get done. I'm about halfway done with the squares. I've been doing one row at a time:cutting, sewing, then pressing.

marsharini 01-18-2014 06:38 AM

I'm working on a rail fence quilt top, so I'll join in. It's cold and snowy here; don't want to go out if I don't have to, so what better way to spend the day?

kaelynangelfoot 01-18-2014 06:45 AM

I'm in! I have a busy weekend with a violin recital for my cousin I must attend and a funeral for a coworker's father immediately afterwards tomorrow but I'm hoping to sneak some sewing in today and Monday - already started in fact!

I looked at getting involved with QOV last year but found the requirements too restrictive for my life and skills to accommodate. They have very high standards (which is because they want to make sure the quilts are high quality) but I don't have 20 years of experience. You make that quilt and stitch love into the seams and it will be just as "official" as the one from the non-profit organization.

DebraK 01-18-2014 07:06 AM

I'm working on paper pieced blocks from the Doctor Who Along, designed by Soma Archarya and Caroline Press. I just finished block #3 yesterday and I'm starting block #4 today.

I've been working on the QR code for my DD #1 wedding quilt. I posted the picture in the pictures forum as I put it together this morning. I've been sewing all week. Sometimes it is harder to me to sew on the weekends as things can get busy here for me on Sat./Sunday.

Murphy1 01-18-2014 09:03 AM

Send some of your weather our way. We are in major drought this year. Governor Brown has us on 20 per cent reduction. We are the lowest in 100 years of keeping trick. We live by Folsom Lake and it is a pond.

As for Quilting I plan to finish one I am making for my husband and cut out fabric for a Circle Pizzaz quilt which should be fun. Will post pictures later this weekend.

Glad you're all joining me! I finished the other two prayer shawls this morning, then ran out and did some errands. Picked up a pizza while I was out so don't have to cook today :) Now on to sandwich, quilt and bind a small lap quilt for Kids for Comfort.

DebraK 01-18-2014 09:15 AM

Terrible, isn't it! We need rain, badly.

cannyquilter 01-18-2014 10:59 AM

No sewing yet this weekend but have been baking with my DD and DGDs so sending some sweet lemon bread for you to share

DebraK 01-18-2014 11:02 AM

pretty color combos.

Raggiemom 01-18-2014 01:23 PM

CarolineK, love the colors!

DebraK 01-18-2014 02:57 PM

Well, I've just poured myself a glass of wine, so my paper piecing is over for today. I can do any other kind of sewing after a glass of wine, except paper piecing ;-) See you all tomorrow.

donac 01-18-2014 03:58 PM

I amin for the next couple of days. I spent today with dh and his family celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. All the kids and grandkids were there. It did get loud when you have 10young adults talking but it was fun. Tomorrow I will post a picture with all the young cousins.

I have 2small table hangings to do and I might try to do them tomorrow. I also want to finish some tops that are cut out.

I am glad I finally found you guys.

meanmom 01-18-2014 04:29 PM

I cut 10 inch squares last night to make a disappearing pinwheel. I saw it on missouri star. I was in the mood for something fast and easy. I will post pictures when I finish.

Raggiemom 01-18-2014 04:39 PM

DebraK, I don't think I would paper piece after having wine either!

meanmom, disappearing pinwheels sounds fun, I might have to look at that.

Well, my afternoon didn't go quite as planned. I wanted my SITD foot for the new machine but couldn't remember where I put it so had to search the sewing room. So now the room looks worse than it did before! Then I had technical difficulties/learning curve trying to figure out how it works. I told a friend I would bring her some simple pre-cut patterns to look over so flipped through patterns to find some. But I did manage to get my lap quilt sandwiched and quilted. Tomorrow I'll bind it. Then I'm not sure what I want to work on. I won't be quilting until the afternoon; church in the morning then errands after church. See you tomorrow! Keep up the good work :)

Everyone's posting some great pictures of progress!

I'm done for the night too....but no pictures yet and no wine! :D

Nan (where it's still snowing and the wind is picking up)

lots2do 01-18-2014 06:21 PM

I sewed today! Felt great. I've been in a slump so this was the first time in forever that I did. Made my first king sized pillowcase and posted my first photo on another thread here. Pillowcase is for DH, on our bed waiting for him to find it. Maybe I'll make one for me tomorrow. Anyway, now that I have my mojo back, I plan on sewing for the next three days. :)

PS snowed all day here too. We have really had our share of winter this year.

DebraK 01-18-2014 06:34 PM

great bags!

thimblebug6000 01-18-2014 09:52 PM

I cut out & pieced blocks for a zig zag quilt that's done in strips & then cut into squares, rather than the HST. The lighting is too poor tonight to take a picture of the blocks, but if I can start to piece them together tomorrow I'll share a picture then. It's scrappy pink, grey & white.
I always enjoy seeing everyone's projects, thanks for sharing!

Wish I could join up but I will be traveling north to overnight before my bariatric surgery on Monday morning reporting in @ 0 dark thirty! However, I did FINALLY stitch bindings on the backs of four quilts to have them ready to do handwork on the front while I am recuperating. I have dreaded the binding but it turned out to be pretty fun!

Good luck on your surgery! It'll be nice that you'll have something quilty to work on while you recoup.

I'm on my way to make and apply binding to a king size quilt. Hoping to get it finished today while the sun is still shining!

sewbizgirl 01-19-2014 08:38 AM

I will join in! Thanks to Quilt N Nan for steering me here.... I love virtual quilt weekends. I am working on some I Spy strip quilts made with my leftover strips from when I cut I Spy squares. Also have some UFOs I want to resume.

Yesterday my daughter and I shopped til we dropped at JoAnn's-- Big sales! Coupons! Teacher discount!-- and bought tons of fabric for several quilt ideas. Now to put the fabric to use. I am excited because I've been trying to get my daughter interested in quilting/sewing and she's finally taking the bait! She's excited about fabric, that's the first step.

Will check back later with progress pics.

sewbizgirl 01-19-2014 08:40 AM

Holli, good wishes on your surgery. Hope that's the beginning of whole new life for you...

SouthPStitches 01-19-2014 09:24 AM

I'm in. Working on a postage stamp queen sized top. I'm doing it my own way, by making strip sets. It's boring but really like the results. Will name it Summer Breeze. Intentions are to have it LAQed with a cotton batting for spring and summer use.

Good morning all! Actually, I guess it's afternoon now. I just finished the lap quilt for Kids for Comfort, it's about 50 inches square. Now I'm trying to decide what to work on next. I'm thinking about getting some kits ready for our guild sew-in which is February 8th. Then maybe I'll start a couple Bow Tucks for a quarter auction. I'm so glad to have all this company working hard with me. :)
