Consider yourself warned.... Moda tried to hold their prices but just couldn't do it any longer. Retailers will be paying more on the next batch of new fabrics. Batiks are going up A LOT!

CarrieAnne 01-07-2011 03:58 PM

Oh, no! I wonder what they mean ALOT?!

I think the sales rep said the retail price per yard would be $12. I looked at the fat quarter bundles and the price would be $4 per FQ. Ouch!

CarrieAnne 01-07-2011 04:14 PM

Wow, that IS alot.....guess I should buy some now!

Renee110 01-07-2011 04:15 PM

I'll just have to start buying cheap material and making do. You know, I remember the reason my mother made our clothes was to save money. Now it's cheaper to buy the clothes and not make them. I'm only 40 so I'm not talking about in the 30's or anything. I grew up late 70's and 80's.

This is ridiculous!

jaciqltznok 01-07-2011 04:24 PM

I just looked at the "wholesale" prices for fabric that is coming out in the Spring and all I can say....OH $$LL....For basic goods, it will be no less than $5.00 per yard....others are up to as much as $14! wholesale....

run go buy all you can NOW....cuz $5.00 FQ's are up next!

amma 01-07-2011 04:24 PM

WOW  thank you for the warning! :D:D:D

rismstress 01-07-2011 04:26 PM

It's a good thing I have enough fabric to last me two lifetimes. I won't be buying at these prices too often.

Only two lifetimes? You need more! LOL

newquilter10 01-07-2011 04:36 PM

Guess the expensive material will be out and always looking for a bargain will be in!!!!

S D G 01-07-2011 04:46 PM

They are already $12.00 in my area. This is not good news.

jaciqltznok 01-07-2011 04:47 PM

just wait, it won't be too long before that BARGAIN fabric goes up too..,I don't see too many little shops making it after Spring time this year...

CarrieAnne 01-07-2011 04:49 PM

Aw, I hope you ae wrong. More people losing there jobs, I just hate to see it....but I am sure youre right.

Candace 01-07-2011 04:56 PM

Ack!

BMP 01-07-2011 05:06 PM

The prices of everything is getting nuts, no end in site,as for gas, today I passed the gas station on my way to the gym $3.27 on my way home it was $3.29. It seems its been going up at least 2 cents a day and somethimes 2x's in a day!!
Groceries too, I noticed that a few of the items that I buy often have gone up over 25 cents since the holidays.
I think as far as fabric I will only be buying what I will be needing, I really dont have a stash since I have just gotten back into quilting a few months ago. I maybe even only doing small projects only, purses, runners.
I have been cutting back on almost everything we buy or use and I dont know how much more people are expected to go without or cut back on. I really feel for the seniors on small social security and pensions ....Something really needs to change in our country and quick. I did hear on ther news tonight about the southern states that are going to be growing a hybrid cotton this next growing season but didnt catch it all.

candi 01-07-2011 05:06 PM

Oh, no!!!! I don't have a large stash at all! :?

Favorite Fabrics 01-07-2011 05:13 PM

It's all about the cost of the cotton.

And to that I say:

Let's all go out and stock up on underwear!

(At least we will have nice undies while we dig through our stashes.)

I agree completely!! Or at least have the good/new ones on when they have to take me to the hospital cause I had palpitations in the Fabric store!!

charmpacksplus 01-07-2011 07:23 PM

Here's the stock market trend on cotton for the past 30 years.... the price has more than doubled in the past year.

BellaBoo 01-07-2011 07:24 PM

Order order order now, think of the money you will have saved by next year.

charmpacksplus 01-07-2011 07:26 PM

Maybe we should have been buying cotton commodities instead of adding to our cotton stashes

beautress 01-07-2011 07:43 PM

Well, maybe having a stash to fall back on in slim times is not so harsh. I think I will tell DH about this. :)

Favorite Fabrics 01-07-2011 07:56 PM

Look at it this way. If prices go up 10% in 2011... and you've invested in fabric, it's like getting a 10% return on your money. Where else are you gonna get that kind of return? AND, you can have your investment right there in the room with you, and you can pet it, and it won't go bad, and even if thieves break into your house they probably won't be interested in taking it.

So... does this fit the definition of a low-risk, high-yield investment?

Charlee 01-07-2011 08:00 PM

I was about to get all political...but don't want to get spanked by the mods and admin, so will hold my tongue in that arena...
May have to find another hobby/craft...this one is already stretching my budget!

LoL!! I absolutely love your take on things, thanks for the giggles!

It's interesting to read the comments about $12 being a little high to pay.

When I buy retail I pay from $24 upwards a metre. Yes I'm Australian and this explains it all.

So $12 (US) is still a good buy for me and I'm happy certainly while the exchange rate is sooo good for us at the moment.

auntmarie 01-08-2011 03:51 AM

I just read that because of the cotton shortage , american farmers are now planting much more cotton!!!!!!!!!!
Should help for the future.

Midwestmary 01-08-2011 04:01 AM

I feel for the local quilts shops everywhere....most of us just cannot afford those prices - just sad to see small business not being able to make it in this economy.

DebsShelties 01-08-2011 04:04 AM

I am wondering if the new plastic bag tax goes thru with the new congress (20 cents PER bag) if fabric stores will be charging for that also.
Seems one guy tried to get the plastic bags outlawed, didn't work so now he wants to impose another tax on the people.
They said on the news that it is mainly aimed at grocery stores, but I have a feeling it would be any retail operation that uses plastic bags.
We the people are getting taxed to death and beyond.

QultingaddictUK 01-08-2011 04:05 AM

MY LQS told me a month or two back that all cotton based materials/threads were going up because of the global pricing, and I think Global warning, the excuse for everything at present

I buy my fabrics from the USA, I live in the UK, because of our prices are terrible, about £8 - 9 per metre ($13 approx) before the increase  I use http://www.thousandsofbolts.com who's prices are great I can get terrific fabrics at half the price including the postage.

CarrieAnne 01-08-2011 04:50 AM

Thanks for the link Quilting Addict. What a great site, Icould spend ALL day there!

I also live in Uk, so had a look at the website, cannot believe the prices. How do you have it shipped, and what sort of postage do you pay?. Do you buy in small or larger quantities?
Sometimes when I have looked at buying from US,including the postage, the price has never been much different, so I am interested in this site. I have just bought some Moda here in UK and have paid £10.40 for a metre plus postage, but I really needed it to finish a quilt.

There are a few grocery stores here in the UK, including some of the smaller supermarkets where you have to pay for your plastic bags. I have made a few marketing totes which I always use, and I always keep one rolled up in my handbag for for those unitentional buys

CarrieAnne 01-08-2011 05:16 AM

I need to start taking my own bags too. I did make some, but I always forget them. Target gives you 5 cents off your purchase for using them I heard!

Mattee 01-08-2011 05:24 AM

I don't think people should be despairing quite yet. A lot of people talk about how huge their stash is, and yet are worried about the increasing prices. Maybe the rate of growth of your stashes will decline, but it sounds like there will still be plenty of money for purchasing for many (I know not all) of us. Also, if you're smart about looking for sales and deals on the web, plenty can still be purchased! Fatquartershop.com still has old pricing on all of their fabrics as far as I can see, and Fabric.com sells all of Moda's lines even cheaper than that! LQS's may be in trouble (and I'm very sorry about that) but we won't be, as long as we're a bit smarter and more discerning about where and when we buy.

QuiltingaddictUK - I assume you mean global warming. I would love to hear the argument as to how cotton prices are affected by global warming; I haven't heard it. It sounds like you're getting a bit political, though. I don't know what it's like in the UK, but in the US, I certainly haven't seen it being, "an excuse for everything."

quilt3311 01-08-2011 05:25 AM

Yes, prices are going up. My LQS has warned us all that prices are rising. Stock up on anything cotton. I used my Hobby Lobby 40% coupon on a roll of cotton batting. Should keep me for a while.

Mattee 01-08-2011 05:27 AM

I just had a brainstorm. Do you mean indirectly? Global warming is certainly a likely partial cause of the wonky weather that lead to crop failures, hence leading to a shortage, then to increasing prices. I thought you meant a more direct "there's global warming so let's increase prices" kind of thing.

stitchinwitch 01-08-2011 05:42 AM

This increase in prices is ridiculous! I WILL give up quilting if it happens. Of course, I DO have a B I G stash, so I probably have enough to last me the rest of my life if I made a quilt a day until I die!
