What is the most you have ever spent in ONE shop in ONE day?

I thought I had gone over the top when I shelled out $57.89 and then about a year and a half later I spent over $101.00.

I sure had fun though.........

Jim's Gem 11-24-2008 03:12 PM

I once spent about $250 for fabric alone in a shop in Anaheim. I had meant to pay part cash so DH wouldn't find out exactly how much I spent, but got a little flustered (cause my daughter was with me) and just charged the whole thing. It meant that I had to show it all to him. Most of the fabrics were only $2 and $3 per yard so I had a bag so heavy I could barely carry it!!!

patricej 11-24-2008 03:14 PM

i'd be embarrassed to admit how much i spend. i'm "proud" of myself if i can keep it under $50.

sandpat 11-24-2008 04:12 PM

Ok..you ready....take a big gulp and sit down...Over $4,000. Of course, it did include my new Bernina   and of course...just had to have some goodies to use to play with it  Now DH keeps asking ...you ARE about through buying stuff to go with it...aren't you???

gigi2landon 11-24-2008 04:37 PM

Money Spent - well let's look at it this way, I don't have to go to Washington and ask for a bailout........LOL

Elizabeth A. 11-24-2008 04:39 PM

I'm so glad you're not asking about my groccery bill! LOL!

MsSage 11-24-2008 04:50 PM

all you sad was one shop...not fabric
nope I am NOT going there LOL I will never admit I signed that charge slip nope not going to happen not even with my dying breath
Fabric shop but it was not for quilting does that count?
$480
$260 for quilting but that was after saving and waiting for a sale and had been planned out and LOL
Doubt that will happen again anytime soon.

joy 11-24-2008 05:06 PM

4 Jim's Gem.... I do exactly the same... pay half or just some in cash and then put the rest on the card.... and why not, it's legal and saves an argument. What a laugh though !!!

Boston1954 11-24-2008 05:32 PM

Oh my what we go through to hide things from hubby. Sounds like an episode of Lucy. She buys a dress and puts it in the closet. When Ricky finds it, she just says that has been hanging there for months.

Oh, and Sandpat, I think you get the prize for the most. I don't think I have spent that much in the last decade.

quiltwoman 11-24-2008 06:08 PM

Hokey smokes, I"m embarrassed to say but I am positive I could take this category--re upholstering sofas and making drapes really eat up the budget

sewnsewer2 11-24-2008 06:22 PM

I spent about $125. And that was just for the top and backing fabric for one quilt!

mamatobugboo 11-24-2008 07:10 PM

on fabric - about $160 - and that was for my DH's quilt kit which he picked out AT THE STORE and also PAID for with "his" credit card (we have only 2, one he uses mostly for work and one I use for household and personal) so I didn't get into trouble!!! PS, I usually pay for my stash with cash so he can't find out!

joy 11-24-2008 08:13 PM

I thought I was the only shrewd one on this planat !!! OOps.....

Isn't that the truth!!!!
K

Quilt4u 11-25-2008 02:53 AM

Over 300.

reneebobby 11-25-2008 03:18 AM

Me it was over $300.00

vicki reno 11-25-2008 04:17 AM

I spent a bundle the summer myself and several othe ladies shopped for fabric for our churche's anniversary quilt, a little over $300. I think. It was great fun buying fabric on someone else's dime! :!:

mary quite contrary 11-25-2008 05:00 AM

I am so thankful I don't have to try to hide anything from DH. He hunts and I sew. We can buy meat cheaper and we could buy blankets cheaper but that is NOT the point.

I'm not sure what the most was at any given time not counting my machine.

DA Mayer 11-25-2008 06:14 AM

I won't tell if you don't tell. We have had some quilt shops go out of business and fabric was 70% off, how can you not buy lots? I took paint samples in with the 4 colors of paint on the sheet and my neices and sisters and daughter and I took several and used them to select fabric. Was it ever fun. Husband didn't ask how much and I didn't tell. Guess I work just as hard for the money.

dreamer2009 11-25-2008 09:24 AM

Close to 40,000.00
I used to make childrens clothes.
Does that count.

Shadow Dancer 11-25-2008 09:43 AM

Wow, not sure I want to divulge that information...hubby might stumble onto this site and find out! LOL Actually, he knows what I spend on my addiction and supports it to some degree. Now if I was to not pay the bills and spend the money on quilting stuff, he would sing a different tune. lol

My most expensive venture was 585.00, for a quilt I had quilted. That one hurt! Couldn't buy fabric for over two months after that... I went through withdrawl! LOL

Skeat 11-25-2008 09:51 AM

I have to say I was a good spender at my LQS last year...this year I have had to be better:))My theory is there is always a snow storm coming and I have to stock up:))(even in July)I averaged prob around 500-600 a month last year:))The bright side is my LQS allows you to turn your reciepts for every $250 spent, turns into a $25 gift card....does help the ouch of spending more:))I just cashed in 2 of them this morning on thread!:))Skeat........who will tell any vendor if they get greedy at over 10 a yard...I keep walking! I so love the clearance racks!

littlehud 11-25-2008 01:37 PM

After reading all this I don't feel so bad. $100.00 a trip is about right and I try to keep it to once a month. Darn it, the fabric store is right next to the grocery store I shop at so once a month seldom happens. :D :D :D Who needs groceries. LOL

Barbm 11-25-2008 01:57 PM

I think the average is $100 per trip. Needless to say the trips are not very often. I pay cash so I will go a long time between trips.

Now, my ebay- about $50 a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less. But, I think I've finally built enough stash of fat quarters to make some of the really scrappy quilts I want to make. I do so love the boxes of fabric- I could just play in them. But, I can stop, I just did last week. I go a couple of months and then look again to see if I can get some bargains.

Today I'm buying a bolt of batting. Never thought I'd get to this, but once I calculated the per yard vs. the lqs, I'm saving close to $2.00 per yard. And I don't have to carry it home, the UPS guy will put it on the porch.

CissyQuilts 11-25-2008 08:12 PM

I spent over $250 for fabric and notions on one trip last year. I normally spend $30-40 each time I go to my LQS. I've been trying to be good and haven't been fabric shopping in more than 2 months.

Boston1954 11-26-2008 02:42 PM

I am so lucky my husband does not give me a hard time about it. He supports me.

I cannot imagine spending 40,000. in one day. Yikes! Is that figure correct? Or is the decimal in the wrong place?

LOL!! I know that shop! M&L Fabrics at Ball and Knott Street. Used to be a vice of mine when I live in SoCal!
Most I've spend is $200. That included a Moda quilt kit. Love Moda! Another vice of mine.

dreamer2009 11-26-2008 04:56 PM

I know that shop to.
I,ve spent alot of money ther e
when I lived in LA

sew_lulu 11-26-2008 05:14 PM

oh girls... you made me miss that shop. I haven't been there for over a year!!! I'll be home for x-mas so I'll just have to make a stop. Now if only the darn airline won't charge me $15 for extra baggage, it'll be even better.

I belonged to a club where we would order rolls of batting. You have to be really careful with those. They are shipped vacuum-packed. The moment you open the outer packaging, air gets sucked in. Your package will very possibly double in size. I sure hope, if yours is like that, that you have adequate storing!

My answer to the question is almost too modest to mention. I think the most I've ever spent on fabric or notions was 44.00 at walmart once for 10 yards of fabric, but I needed it for a specific project. I just don't have it in the budget to get fabric for the heck of it. When I'm down to the last few stitches on two projects, I start saving for the fabric to start the next two. The purchases are always twice. First trip to buy the needed yardage for the tops and some modest borders....the second trip to purchase batting, backing and binding.

MY HUSBAND, however, has spent more on one trip than I ever have. 4 years ago, (our anniversary is in December too), we had decided to just open our anniversary presents at Christmas too. I was trying to stay close to budget. I had gone and bought him some smaller Craftsman tool things. I had circled in a JoAnn's ad two different sewing machine caddies that they had on sale. I told a friend that I couldn't decide which one I wanted, but Randy could choose one as a gift for me and I would love whatever he gave me. He went and bought BOTH!! So his total was close to 100.00. I use one for one of my machines ALWAYS and it has a top piece for holding notions. The other, I keep my wips in so they are always close.

butterflywing 11-28-2008 03:19 PM

the most i have ever spent at one time at one place was almost $300 at a clearance center after not shopping at all for almost 3 yrs. of being ill. that included yardage for ufo's, yardage for new projects, stash yardage and batts of various sizes. once i s caught up, i never, EVER did that again.

but my dh spends a lot on fishing trips, so la-di-dah!

sewhappy57 11-29-2008 12:38 AM

I went to California to visit a friend, she took me to Hancock fabrics and I went crazy spent $400.00+ $ and then my luggage was overweight. Lucky for me she was a quilter to and when we told her is was all fabric she let it slide through. Only another quilter would understand the importance of fabric. :D

So, la di dah is right. We have no clashes on this subject, because he drops his cash in the slots and I spend mine on the stash. We just have different methods of gambling.

beachlady 11-29-2008 01:49 PM

I have spent way too much at one time, but DH just smiles and waits in the car. Online spending is so easy to do too!!!! Hope I get to use all I have bought....someday!

butterflywing 11-29-2008 02:35 PM

that's the thing...........the gathering is as much fun as the creating.

judee0624 11-29-2008 06:33 PM

:D Yep, I know M & L too. Actually, on our first visit, DH picked out most of the fabric. I was just beginning to build a stash then. We spent over $100 that day and went back the next day and spent over $200. He said, you may as well get it while you are here! Great philosophy. It is an hour's drive for us but one of his fishing supply stores is close by. I haven't been back for a year, I need to go!
The other big spend day was at a shop closing. Just couldn't pass up that deal!

judee

Jim's Gem 11-29-2008 11:14 PM

Yea, M&L is where I spent my loot that time. I have only been there about 3 times as it is about 80 miles from my home. If it was closer to the freeway, I would be there more often as I drive to Orange County to visit my parents. Maybe in a couple of weeks when I go to care for dad after surgery.....

I know I don't have half the stash that some of you gals have, but I would need more than one lifetime to use it all.

Mplsgirl 11-30-2008 07:10 AM

$40,000.00? Is that right? Lordy, Lordy.

I used to live in Orange County but it was before I quilted. Evidently a good thing, because I probably would support that place (M & L) now. I spent $157 one day and almost gave myself a heart attack. But then I don't spent it when I don't have it, and my hot-rodding, skeet shooting, bow hunting hubby says nothing as long as the bills are paid!!

Quilter101 12-01-2008 08:25 AM

50$ but part was a birthday gift from my aunt(rotary cutter) and I got other stuff for about 20.00...
Compared to the rest that's nothing! Next year though, I'm going to catch up.... I'm buying a new sewing machine...
