Hi all,

Well, since I've been going back and forth between projects lately (again, does quilting give you OCD?), I was wondering myself what parts I like and what parts I procrastinate doing. I'm wondering other quilters thoughts on the subject.

Personally, I am happy piecing and seeing the pattern 'transform' before my eyes. I also thoroughly enjoy going through patterns to see what I'd like to make, and choosing the perfect quilt for a specific person. Oh, and I LOVE to give it away.

What I'm not crazy about is choosing colors (because I'm always freaked out worrying if it will look OK), basting and marking for the quilting, although I just finished marking a lap quilt to hand quilt and I do enjoy the planning process and then seeing what it looks like after I'm done.

Anyone else?

I love designing, coming up with which block patterns to put together, deciding what fabric goes where. And I also love quilting the finished top.

I seem to get stuck deciding on the type of borders and oh, I loathe doing the binding.

Granna of 5 01-23-2011 02:01 PM

I love to pick out the fabrics, but hate deciding which pattern will go with my picks. I enjoy the piecing not so much the quilting, but I do enjoy the binding since I learned the ladder stitch on this board.

Lindsey 01-23-2011 02:05 PM

I just don't like sewing the rows together. Perhaps measuring and remeasuring for the borders. Love doing the blocks and Love the quilting and the binding.

Hen3rietta 01-23-2011 02:06 PM

My least favorite is assembling the quilt sandwich. I ost enjoy putting the tops together.

Crawling around on the floor to pin it together, only way I can keep the back from pleating whenI FMQ! Be careful ladies I messed up the old tailbone!

Jill 01-23-2011 02:32 PM

I love the piecing and binding, and I like the fact that I have a terrific LQS where I live. Things I don't like so much include matching seams in rows and not having enough money to buy every piece of fabric that I want.

sewingsuz 01-23-2011 02:37 PM

I have to say sandwiching the quilt together and basting it is what idon't enjoy.

deema 01-23-2011 02:44 PM

I find that I start to procrastinate about half way through each process. Once I get about half of my blocks pieced, I start to lose steam...I'll putter at it till they're done. Then half way through piecing my blocks together, I start to procrastinate again. I'll putter through those until they're done. Then I just don't even want to look at the borders...until I start getting them on and I'm anxious to see it finished. Then the first half of quilting it goes great, until I start to get bored. There is only one part of the quilt that I never procrastinate on doing - the binding! Because as soon as I'm done the binding, I can wash and dry and give it away so I can stop looking at it! HA!

BUT!!! I LOVE each part! I love piecing blocks and laying them out and seeing the pattern show through. I love getting the blocks together in the top, and seeing my "plan" come to life! And the borders just MAKE it, sometimes.

I love it all. I hate it all. When I'm getting close to the end, I find myself NEEDING to finish this *darn* quilt! But then when I give it away, I wish I would have kept it, just for a little while, to snuggle with some of my hard work. lol

I really do love quilting. I swear!

I'm not great at colours and values.

BKrenning 01-23-2011 02:47 PM

I hate all the washing, starching & ironing before I can even start on the dreaded cutting. I also hate piecing large backings so I usually cheat and buy extra wide or use a sheet but when I'm feeling thrifty or can't find a sheet--I'll still force myself to piece them. Flannel backings mostly.

CajunQuilter2 01-23-2011 02:58 PM

My least favorite part is the pinning the layers together and having to piece the backing. My favorite part is seeing whatever the pattern may be come together. I also enjoy doing the binding since I learned a great way to meet the ends.....works perfect every time.

OH, I almost forgot how much fun piecing the backing is. Sheesh, I'll be ready for that darn step again soon!

greensleeves 01-23-2011 03:09 PM

I hate squaring up but I make myself do it. Just about everything else I enjoy except as someone said-those backs you have to piece.

liminanc 01-23-2011 03:50 PM

I love to pick out the colors and decide what pattern to do. I don't like to cut, I find it boring, and I don't like to do the quilt sandwich because I have to spread it out on the floor.

Snorky Lvs2Quilt 01-23-2011 04:01 PM

I love everything about quilting except handwork....uugghh.

gmaybee 01-23-2011 04:35 PM

I love picking out a pattern, and going to the store to pick out the fabric. I don't know how many times I've gone with one color theme in mind and come home with something totally different. Washing and drying the fabric is something I don't like. I do love cutting, piecing and sewin top together. I send it out to be quilted because I don't like to FMQ on a large quilt. (Hope to some day have a long arm) Then I love to bind it, by sewing onto the front, turn to the back and hand sewing it.

Jingle 01-23-2011 05:02 PM

I dislike piecing the back, the one I'm working on now was so time consuming.

JAGSD 01-24-2011 04:33 AM

I really enjoy the whole process; from picking the pattern and fabrics,to the piecing and quilting, to putting the biding on.

This is exactly how I am! I LOVE quilting, but sometimes it just seems to drag on a bit, doesn't it?

I'm keeping it small lately. I think that's going to be my sweet spot.

this is the one thing I can not do.....could you share your way with a struggling quilter??? :) it would be so appreciated!

MerryQuilter 01-24-2011 05:10 AM

Cutting least fav

Borntohandquilt 01-24-2011 05:22 AM

The only thing I don't like so much is the ironing of meters of fabric. I love to pick out the quilting patterns, the marking and of course I love most the hand quilting! :-)

Janet Espeleta 01-24-2011 06:41 AM

I enjoy the whole process except for the basting of the quilt sandwich. Occasionally I will pay a longarm quilter to baste a large quilt for me that I want to hand quilt. Worth every penny!

meetoo82 01-24-2011 07:09 AM

 I too learned the ladder stitch on this board. Used it to finish binding a whole cloth queen size quilt yesterday. Washed it and slept under it last nite. Does this make it a "used" quilt?

Dandish 01-24-2011 07:15 AM

I guess I'd say the sandwiching also, although I really don't mind it too much.

I do find that I kind of "fear" certain steps - like the acdtual quilting - but once I get started (every time!) I realize it's actually fun and I shouldn't be so hesitant. I love piecing, and I love doing the binding. My goal for this year is to practice a lot and get better at quilting so I can really look forward to that too and not be so gun-shy.

Char 01-24-2011 08:25 AM

Right now, I hate squaring up blocks! I'm working on a quilt that i don't particularly like (someone else picked it out) and I have a gazillion to try to square up into 8" blocks!

catrancher 01-24-2011 09:22 AM

I hate cutting. Once a quilt is cut out, i feel as if i have a new lease on life. I pretty much love everything else. My favorite? Probably watching the reaction of someone receiving one of my quilts.

dhanke 01-24-2011 09:32 AM

I like everything about quilting except for sewing on plain (as opposed to pieced) borders. I don't know why I dislike this part, maybe it's tedious. Everything else provides it's own type of enjoyment for me. My very favorite part is piecing the blocks.

cheri stonespinner 01-24-2011 10:05 AM

I love new techniques and tools that make difficult blocks easy! I love piecing and seeing the block blossom. I'm not big on quilting. I zip to the pillow case method using polar fleece as the backing.

cheri stonespinner 01-24-2011 10:13 AM

A little off topic I once tried to sew on a treadle machine. It would have been funny if I wasnt trying to make kitchen curtens that I needed. I think I would have enjoyed sewing with this machine if I knew how to sew with it. Can you please send me a personal tute on how to do it?

cmw0829 01-24-2011 10:28 AM

I really like the piecing, beginning to enjoy the fabric selection. Really hate the cutting (but only because I get a backache cutting on a table-level surface).

It's easy, and just SEW much fun! I joined an on-line group, and have been a member now for probably 10 years or so. The name of the group is called Treadle On, and there's an abundance of information on there about treadles.

Here's the link: http://treadleon.net/

I honestly don't sew on anything other than 'people powered' machines. I just feel like I've got tons more control, and the machines are built to last. My oldest is from 1879, and my 'every day machine' is probably around 1920's.

Hope it helps!

Gal 01-24-2011 11:35 AM

I love every aspect of quilt making apart from the basting on the floor bit, but only this week I have discovered the way of doing that on a table with two boards so I can't wait to try that with my next quilt! Just getting a bit to old and stiff to be scrambling around on the floor too much!

lisalisa 01-24-2011 11:49 AM

This is probably wrong to say on a quilting board, but I'm not so fond of the quilting. Seems everything goes well up to this point and it usually goes to hell. That said I've only ever done SITD and some basic stuff with the pre-sets on my machine but I've only just obtained a darning foot. Not lookin so good though..
I always feel a little fraudulent calling myself a quilter, when what I really am is a piecer.

Dagny 01-24-2011 12:03 PM

I hate pressing the fabrics. The part I like best is hand-quilting.

cheri stonespinner 01-24-2011 02:37 PM

This is a great resource. Maybe I,ll get Grandmas machine up and running afterall. Other people know I sew and I now have other machines to clean and get running.

IBQUILTIN 01-24-2011 03:21 PM

I love it all. Its a journey

I'm SEW happy you mentioned this. I don't enjoy the starching & pressing process, either. I was hoping to quilt all day on my birthday, so you reminded me I should get all my starching & pressing done first so I can enjoy the day. :)

I love everything except marking for the quilting. Maybe once I get a little better I will make my quilting more intricate and will enjoy marking too.

Marilynsue 01-24-2011 03:59 PM

Favorite part is piecing
Least favorite is the borders
