It's official. My Husband hasn't a clue about quilting! I just showed him the "flag" I just completed and he said, "It's a flag". I told him yes it is and I just made it. I took it over to him so he could see it better and he said the stars are all messed up! Yes dear. Never mind. I will no longer look to him for approval of my quilts! This is what the half finished top looks like. I now have to cut it in strips top to bottom and sew it together. It is from a pattern that I got at the Fort Worth quilt show. "Fratured Flag" by Cross Mountain Stitchery. MEN!!!!

well, I think it's really pretty. :)

just wait until it's all done to show him next time- i have found most men really LOVE quilts -- when they are quilts-
when they are still in the works it is more difficult to (see) what you are doing- and it's not just men---many many women are the same- and worse. I've had women look at a quilt in progress and say---well, it's all raggy - i'd just throw that away---then some time later see the completed quilt and not even believe it is what they first saw--they still (don't get it) i have a friend who regularly tells me---wouldn't it be easier to just go to Penneys? non-quilters are all alike regardless of gender :) we can only educate them- and hold back our projects until they are complete-meaning quilted and bound :) |

non-quilters are all alike regardless of gender :) now THAT'S funny! |
Well, it's like I always tell my husband, "it's a good thing you're cute!!!!"
Nice job, by the way. |
My brother never fails to remind me how dumb it is to cut up fabric just to sew it together again....but he did like the quilt I made him!
|
Nicely done!!
|
Awesome
|
I love the fabrics you chose for this quilt.
|
That's going to be really neat when you're done, please post a finished product photo. It's true others don't always have the same vision we do for our projects. Enjoy your process and just show him when you've finished :)
|
That's cool!!!
|
Really great flag! My DH always says "are you knitting again" just to get me going, and it works, every time! Aren't they priceless!

non-quilters are all alike regardless of gender : Yep I have a friend that always ask why I bother...I don't bother answering her..or if I am in ONE of my moods I ask her "why do u bother gambling every chance you get, at least I have something to show for my money" Gotta have a hit home come back. I agree I don't usually share my hobbies to my other half either unless he asks what I am doing and even then I don't expect much of a reaction. That's what girlfriends are for-he he |
Some hairy leggers are clueless but I love the quilt and would love to have one like it!!

very nicely done -
I never ask hubs to look at my sewing; I have a hard time keeping him out of my sewing room over my shoulder. I was getting ready for bed 2 nites ago and he handed me a pair of (wet) jeans (he went shrimping and came home wet) and said "Can you sort of fix these?", "what did you do here!" hes torn open the end of the waistband at the buttonhole completely destroyed the fabric! "well, I went to pull the net in and about lost my britches and your brother had to look at my crack all the boatride back." "these are wet and dirty, I cant fix them like that!" "well, just throw em in the dryer first, I want to wear them tomorrow. theyre comfortable" "they must be now - they were so tight you torn the buttonhole open! besides, theyre dirty I dont put dirty clothes in the dryer, and how am I supposed to fix these, theres nothing to sew to! I cannot believe the button is still there and not broken off, or ripped off" You can fix them, you sew all the time, you take little bits and sew them up all the time!" "thats quilting, not magic," "well, you could do it if you wanted, but thats all right, I'll do it myself ", he huffed off to bed. so, I washed and dried the pants, went up and found a piece of denim the size of a double postage stamp, hand sewed it onto the button hole end of the waistband and moved the button over as far as I could - nearly 1/2", all with handquilting thread. This all took about 2 hrs and he was sleeping when I got to bed. The next AM he said, "oh, see I knew you could just whip this up, and you even made them more comfortable somehow!" tsk tsk - I really don't think he's just playing dumb about this sometimes! sharet |
I told my husband that asking a quilter to repair your ripped up jeans is like asking Picasso to paint your garage! I do give in once in a while, but not in the middle of the night.
|
Your quilt is lovely. I'm going to make one myself.
|
ahhh - not many men are that appreciative of the work and effort that goes into quilting....Mine finally does but it took years....we just celebrated our 40th in July. So...give it time. Who knows - might end up quilting himself. It COULD happen. Happened to DH's cousin...she has been quilting for years and her DH just couldn't see it. After 20 years, he decided to quietly try quilting and he loves it!

can't wait to see it "wave"

My husband always tries to come up with something positive to say when I show him a finished or semi-finished quilt. He remembers that I've complained when I've had to re-sew seams to get points to match up so he knows that points are important. His ultimate compliment when I show him a quilt? "It's very pointy." He tries.
|
I'm sorry to hear your husband wasn't more supportive. Even though my husband doesn't always like what I make, he knows how much effort goes into a quilt. He's actually help me design some quilts.
|
my husband would have said the same thing.

Billy I like your flag and hope you show us the finished project. Sorry your DH doesn't "get it" :-) |
Too funny....but your flag is nice and I like the fabrics.
|
I like funky Stars. Did he count them? Lovely quilt. I love the flags.

tsk tsk - I really don't think he's just playing dumb about this sometimes! sharet
My Sons think I am Houdini. |
WOW!!! It's beautiful
|
Husbands, what do they know?
My brother never fails to remind me how dumb it is to cut up fabric just to sew it together again....
my ex use to say the same. Although my DD never got into sewing or quilts I would ask her opinion on color and she was pretty much right most times. She doesn't want a pieced quilt just not her style. |
AT least my DH says nice things about my works in progress although his face is saying "What in the world is she thinking!"
|
About 15 yrs ago I took my hubby to a quilt show in Orlando. He walk ed around, studied each one then told me these aren't what my grandmother used to make. Now he flips thru a quilt magazine if it's lying on the coffee table and comments about one here and there. As a retired builder he has helped me in the sewingroom more than once from doing math to cutting (when my wrist was broken). The biggest difference in his trade and my hobby is fabric is flexible - wood is not.
|
This is beautiful! Great job!
|
To save that argument with husbands, my pattern calls for one large piece of blue star fabric add a red and white strip set to that and then add the remaining stripes. So much easier. Then all they have to complain about is the stars are one laid out as they should be. :? Oh well. Can't please everyone. Just please yourself. :-D As long as you are happy with it, who cares what he thinks. We all think it's great.
|
It is my opinion that when you are discussing quilting with non-quilters, you might just as well be speaking a foreign language. At best, they hear, "blah, blah, blah, blah". The only reason I talk to non-quilters (either on-line or face to face) is for my own satisfaction ... I know they understand absolutely nothing that I'm saying ... and I don't care!
|
I like very much how your flag is done. Lucky for me my dh praises my work, puts pictures up on FB sometimes telling people I made it even before I get a chance. He is very supportive of my quilting
|
lol! that's what my DH always says to me!

Nice job, by the way. |
It's not just husbands that can't see the beauty in an unfinished quilt. My 6 yr. old grandson saw a potholder I made that didn't have the binding on it yet and said, "Ma'amMaw, no one will want to use that, it's too ugly." :-( I first thought he was talking about the colors or the pieced design, which I thought were extra nice, then I discovered he was talking about the raw edges.

Men! Can you just smack him upside the head for all of us??? rotflmbo!
