my finished quilt is alive!
I recently finished a quilt for me....all the others have been gifts. After washing and drying, it looks great on my bed. But every morning when I get up, the silly thing is on the floor! I swear I didn't quilt any feet into it, but I am baffled. Why does the quilt travel at night and what can I do to keep it in place?
|
a couple of thoughts... did you use 100% cotton? cotton would 'cling' more to the layer beneath.
did you make it with enough hanging over? did you use a cotton or wool batting... a batting that it would be heavy enough to stay put? i'm sure it's disappointing to find it on the floor. |
Just maybe.....someone is kicking the cover off at night??? Seriously, my husband gets hot and cold every night. No matter what I put on the bed, his side is always almost totally on the floor at the foot of the bed. The funny thing is, he wakes up and swears I steal his cover. Well, picture me with the cover going across the bed, similar to an HST as he pulls mine over to his side. I end up with almost none! I have to get up in the middle of the night to straighten the covers so he will give me some. I'm not complaining too loud, after all, he is a keeper. I've had him for 48 1/2 years and he's still a good guy.
I have found that using flannel on the back of a quilt really keeps it in place on the bed. Even he can't get it kicked off to the point where we both are cold. Cotton Sateen sheets, my favorite, and quilts with cotton backings seem to just slide around on each other too much for his active nights. |
It might not be the quilt but what it is on top of. Lay it on top of another flannel or cotton blanket.
|
The quilt top and backing are 100% cotton...the batting is an 80/20 blend....it is on top of another quilt with about 12 inches of overhang....and I am the only one in the bed!

heehee, a little strip of velcro?

Maybe you have a bit of restless legs syndrome. My DH used to be so active at night with his, it seemed he was running a race and he never knew he was doing it. Thankfully, after his transplant, all that stopped. Go figure.
|
Mine does the same thing.... I just put it back on the bed in the morning..... it's part of making the bed.
|
That is really strange!
|
I can't really help you because I've never had that problem, other than the suggestions made by others but hopefully someone will give you some helpful suggestions that you can try.
|
I haven't made a quilt big enough for a king size bed, so my husband and I each have our own quilts - problem solved.
|
You just need an anchor at the foot of your bed. A cat would do nicely! :) My cat knows that is one of his jobs!!

I think if you place a flat flannel sheet between the two quilts, that will stop the top quilt from sliding off the underneath quilt.

Get an animal to sleep at the foot of the bed and they keep everything in place.

Sounds like you wrestle in your sleep ..

Mine, too. I think it's because he comes with a natural fur coat. I'm not complaining - it makes him more cuddly.
|
Perhaps it's happening because it's over another quilt, and thus slippery. My sister had that problem and fixed it with a flannel sheet between the quilts.

Well, the best thing that I have found to keep a "traveling quilt" in place is a 15 pound cat on top of the quilt that sleeps between us up near our pillows.:)
|
Can you post a picture??? I would love to see a quilt with feet:D
|
Try turning it upside down--bottom to top that is--and see if it still 'travels. I had a light blanket that did the same and I finally realized it was the nap of the weave. Oh and yes, I have to agree that a 15 pound cat helps immensely. So does having your cover stealing DH go on a business trip!!
|
There is more movement at night then you realize...LOL....

i have one that does the same thing....sort of --- it "walks" off the bottom of the bed....every morning it is at least a foot or more over the end of the bed....and that is WITH about 40 pounds of cat on it....in 3 different cats that is. Only 1 of the quilts does this and i have no idea why.
|
LOL ~ I thought you were going to say your cat crawled under it and it was moving. Our cat does that quite often. I made a tree skirt for DD for Christmas, and her cats would get under it, and it would start moving.
Sorry, can't help more than the others with your problem. |

My problem is our flannel sheets go to DH side of the bed, the fleece blanket migrates to my side and the quilt goes over the bottom end by about a foot or so... Queen size bed in Motor home! ! Allergic to cats, quilt has one way design so can't turn and it does stick to the fleece blanket. It is a mystery!!! We just wrestle it all back together in the morning. I have learned tho, to pull everything back to the top of the bed BEFORE I get out. Makes it easier to make the bed that way..... go figure! I would LOVE to have a ghost with us.... friendly one please !!

The problem in our 5th wheel is we have a quilt and than a fuzzy blanket on top. We it either ends up on one side or the blankets slide down off the bed. We have flannel sheets. I guess I should put the fuzzy one under the quilt. The quilt is not as warm as it once was. I made it in 1997 and it has always been in our trailers.
|
I just got the funniest mental image of little feet extending out from your quilt each night and jumping to the floor with the quilt following.
And think how many quilt photos we see with feet at the bottom! |
Mine does the same thing. I have it sitting of a fuzzy blanket. I don't know if it slides off or my husband gets hot and he throws it off.
|
Same here. The nights have been really cold. I have 2 thermal but light weight blankets and another. I had to get up in the middle of the night once and pick it up off the floor because my behind got cold. He woke up and wanted to know what I was doing with taking all the covers. It was on his side. We have a queen size bed and I use king size blankets so we have ample cover. :(

Soooooooooooo funny!! hope you find the solution!
|
I have found that the larger quilts with at least a 12 inch overhang, tend to drag themselves off the end of the bed because they are just heavy enough to do so. Have not figured out yet how to stop it except to fold the overhang up onto the bed at night. That seems to stop it from pulling off. Hope this helps

Sounds just like my husband & I. Haha. I made the mistake of putting a slippery backing on my log cabin quilt. Live & learn.
