My first try at a Hunter's Star block

I've been wanting to try to make a Hunter's Star block for a long time now. Today I found this tutorial from Roolen & she made it so easy. My cutting & sewing accuracy was a bit off & my block measured out to be 9 5/8" square. I wasn't sure what the size was going to be as I could not find it in any of Roolen's posts. I was hoping for a 12 1/2" block for a charity quilt block drive I'm participating in so I will put a border around it to make it 12 1/2" unfinished. I'm really happy how it turned out.

Here's where Roolen posted her tutorial:

Here's a pic with the border. I decided to put on a flange (which I've never done before). I like how it turned out.

Your hunter's star is beautiful! Thanks for siting the link you used. Makes it look doable for everyone!

osewme 07-01-2017 11:44 AM

One key tip on the tutorial is in Step 3 & Step 4....be sure to IRON FIRST and then cut. I cut first & ironed later before I realized what was going wrong.:o

Excellent, very well done!

nativetexan 07-01-2017 02:40 PM

oh yes, do border it and use it. gorgeous.

quiltingbuddy 07-01-2017 02:46 PM

Lovely! Will you do an outer border in the same red to tie it in? I really love that block!

Peckish 07-01-2017 03:21 PM

That's gorgeous! I love the pop of red you added.

My first quilt was a Hunter's Star. I paper-pieced it and quilted it by check. When I picked it up from the quilter, I mentioned that it was my first, and the ladies at the shop were flabbergasted because all my points matched. Gotta love paper piecing!

wesing 07-01-2017 07:48 PM

Your points are perfect and I love your fabric. You should definitely do a whole quilt!

Beautiful block. Love the blue batik.

osewme 07-02-2017 03:33 AM

This one block is for a charity block drive but I do plan to make a whole quilt now that I see how easy the block was to make using Roolen's method (see the link on my first post). I'm so excited about how it turned out. I think it's one of my prettiest blocks I've ever made. I can't quit looking at it on my design wall. :)

Love that, great idea to add the flange to the border!

You did a terrific job! I like your fabric choices with the star and the flange makes it all pop!

JanieH 07-02-2017 04:36 AM

Gorgeous block! I love Hunter Star and plan on making it for my next quilt. I have always wanted to do a yellow and white quilt and think this pattern will work well. I hope my points come out as beautiful as yours!

coopah 07-02-2017 04:48 AM

Love this!

ccthomas 07-02-2017 04:55 AM

Nice Hunter's Star.

tessagin 07-02-2017 04:56 AM

Love the Hunter's Star and adore yours. This just proves you don't have to spend a lot of money for beautiful block patterns.

patsews 07-02-2017 06:13 AM

These blocks would be beautiful in a whole quilt!!

kat13 07-02-2017 07:05 AM

Wow! I spent last week trying to go this block...
I finished it and can see the star but it's
Terrible! Not ready for this! When I get over my
Failure I may try your method.. Thanks for
Sharing!

osewme 07-02-2017 07:44 AM

kat13, please do try that method of making the block. It was so easy. I have always loved the Hunter's Star but was a bit intimidated by it & the directions I've seen in the past but Roolen's tutorial is so easy & well explained. I'm not sure what the block is suppose to measure out at but I was able to square mine up to 9 5/8" square. I'm going to make another one today & see what the size comes out to on it.

annette1952 07-02-2017 08:46 AM

Beautiful block! I love the blue batik you are using & your points are perfect.

zozee 07-02-2017 09:52 AM

!Nice looking block! You should be proud of yourself. I love the red.

DottyD 07-02-2017 10:36 AM

Nice link to the tutorial - thank you for sharing. Your block has turned out really well - love blue and white.
We are hoping to visit Texas later this year ( near Dallas ) really looking forward to coming back and seeing our British friends.

Cheryl 07-02-2017 10:49 AM

Very pretty. I'd say you did very well at it. I love your colors.

cathylynn 07-02-2017 11:35 AM

love the flange and the border! this quilt block has been on my bucket list for awhile. may have to get to it sooner rather than later since you've inspired me. great job!

susie-susie-susie 07-02-2017 11:54 AM

Love everything about your block. The colors are wonderful. At first I thought the red was just marking where the flange is, But it is a wonderful idea. You are well on your way to being a "master" quilter. Your points are perfect. Keep up the good work.
Sue

salederer 07-03-2017 07:27 AM

Very nicely done! Your construction is right on.

osewme 07-03-2017 08:37 AM

Thanks for all the compliments on the block. I did make another one on Sunday & it turns out that it is a 9 1/2" unfinished block...so mine was close. :) I checked Roolen's original blog where she posted the directions in 2009 and she said it was a 9" x 9" finished block (without seams). I'm thinking if I make a full lap quilt like that I might put a small red sashing between each block. How do you think that would look? It's hard for me to visualize things like that. Maybe someday I'll invest in EQ7 so I can see things before I actually make them. For the time I will just use my design wall to audition what looks best.

Oh WOW, Peggi, that is awesome. My blocks will have a blue border around each one with a 1/4" red flange next to the block. So one entire block would consist of ... 9" block...1/4" red flange...3" blue border. I was thinking instead of sewing each block together like that maybe I should have a separation of red sashing between each block since each block will have a blue border around it. Does that make sense? Can you show me something like that? Also, could I see it on point? I love quilts on point. Thank you, thank you.

How about something like this? The hunter star block is 9", the red around each block is .25", and the sashing is 3".

I put the blue border as a 3" sashing because I thought that a 3 inch border around each block (which equals a 6" sashing) would sort of overwhelm the 9" blocks, even if you did put the red inbetween each border.

If you sew this up, I recommend sewing the block first, then your 1/4" red border, then a 1.5" blue border around each block. Then sew your blocks together in rows. This is much, much easier than trying to line up long sashing strips
