My homemade roll up design wall

2 Attachment(s)
I had the shelf already. It was in our dining room of our old house, but it didn't fit in the new so I took it for my sewing room. It was wood colored so I painted it (behr embellished blue is the color). I Love the way it looks now. Anyway, I got a cheap roll up shade and some gridded flannel. I glued the flannel to the shade using Aleene's Fabric Fusion. Hint: let it dry well before rolling up the shade. :D Then we mounted the hardware to the inside of the shelf brackets and installed the shade. It rolls down easily. A little touchy going up but I'm getting the hang of it. I had to increase the tension because of the extra weight of the flannel. I've never had a design wall so I have no idea how much I'll use it but I'm happy to have it. I paid about $23 for the roller shade, a dollar or two for the brackets, and about $20 for the flannel (it was a little expensive but I wanted the grid). The width of the shade is about 60".

And yes I put the flannel on crooked. I had to work in sections. lol. If I was doing it again I would have started at the bottom where it's easier to tell if it's straight.

Excellent idea. I don't have the place for a design wall. Mine is portable. I use the tablecloth flannel backed. Then I use skirt hangers and hang it on my curtain rod at my 6x5 window. Yours is cute and adorable. I still may go out and look for the flannel grid though. At least it's a guide!

Very nice!! Great repurposing of that cute shelf, too. :)

quiltinghere 02-15-2014 12:16 PM

Cute idea!

Where did you find gridded flannel?

Thanks
Nan

nanacc 02-15-2014 12:30 PM

Great idea! A good repurposing(is that a word?) and decorating project!

ManiacQuilter2 02-15-2014 12:31 PM

If it works for you, that is what is most important. Love the shelf. I have some shelves without the trim. Hope to get them painted and mounted on the wall this spring.

I bought it from Nancy's Notions. I saw it at some other sites but I had a free shipping code so in the end, it was cheaper there. I think the per yard price was pretty comparable at all the places I looked at.

I bought those things about 10 yrs ago with big plans and now I can't remember what they are. lol. I figure they look cute on the shelf anyway.

Awesome idea. I will be saving this idea for my future sewing room. Nowhere to put it on cement basement walls right now

I don't think so. I'm not sure who made it though-I saw a name on the selvage but don't remember it now. Here's the link. http://www.nancysnotions.com/product...nnel+fabric.do

They also sell it by the yard at Mary Jo's Cloth Shop in Gastonia, NC. I believe its in the Notions department.
Just call their 800 #.

Cute shelf, great idea and I know you will love it!!

eparys 02-17-2014 06:04 AM

Very very cute and I love the shelf ..... oh to have a vertical wall to put something like that on!! We have a Cape and all the ceilings in my sewing room are slanted!!

Yooper32 02-17-2014 06:33 AM

Congratulations on a very neat idea.

cpcarolyn 02-17-2014 06:48 AM

Great idea.

youngduncan 02-17-2014 07:03 AM

That is a totally awesome idea! I like the fact that you are being very practical and decorative, too. You've given me a good idea to try. My other attempts at using flannel-backed tablecloths didn't work out very well. The plastic side wouldn't stick to the double-sided tape I was using, although the tape REALLY stuck to the doors it was on! Thanks for posting this.

llong0233 02-17-2014 08:23 AM

Well done!

carolynjo 02-17-2014 08:35 AM

Pretty. You will find many uses for the new flannel wall.

MargeD 02-17-2014 10:38 AM

What a fabulous idea, and my eyesight must be off, as I don't see that it's crooked, but it's probably just me.

gale 02-17-2014 11:05 AM

You can see the crookedness by the lines on the grid compared to the sides of the roller. It shouldn't matter much. it bugs me a little but I'll get over it. lol

calla 02-17-2014 12:15 PM

Just too darn cute and great idea................calla

JanieH 02-17-2014 12:31 PM

vivoaks 02-17-2014 12:43 PM

That looks really nice. Great idea!!

running1 02-17-2014 01:01 PM

MacThayer 02-17-2014 01:35 PM

Thanks for the great idea! I hadn't thought of using a roller shade!

caspharm 02-17-2014 03:26 PM

A great idea. There is a someone who makes these and sells them, but they where like $240 each.
