Dear Friends:

I was given a Featherweight for Christmas this last year. I had been shopping with my daughters for our "annual Christmas Shopping Fun Day" and found it at a thrift store we went into. I drooled and fumed...I couldn't justify spending my Christmas money on myself...so I walked away. On Christmas day, it was the final gift of the day presented (all ten of the children made a big production of the presentation :D ......and yes, I said ten...yes I have ten children...all mine...all from one marriage...no twins :P (those are the most common questions I get..and their answers 8-) 8-) ))

ok...but back to the topic here!!!!! I was messing around last night (she sews like a dream) and noticed a small metal decal on the machine that said "1851-1951 100 yrs of sewing" Does this mean that my Featherweight was produced as a 100 yr celebration piece???? :!: :!:

I mean, I was just wondering....ya'll here have made me so aware of looking closely at what I have, now I can't wait to dig out all the other Singers I have collected and really look at them closely.

Anyway, any information would be appreciated ;) ;)

Congrats on the machine! I have 6 kids...all one husband and no twins so I get those questions too. You know the question that aggravates me the most? "You know how that happens don't you?" I have heard that one a zillion times! I now just smile and answer "Yes, that's why we have them!"

dakotamaid 03-29-2011 04:18 AM

I Have a FW that was born the same year I was.:) OH, and my mom used to get the same questions for us 11 kids. I am a twin though!

Yep...me too...heard that question allllllllll the time :x :x :x

So, I finally decided to come up with an answer that was just as nosey......

Using my sly-est expression ( 8-) ) I would say..
"Uh huh, we do.....any we're having a marvelous time 8-) 8-)  "

Shut them up everytime....most folks turned red

sueisallaboutquilts 03-29-2011 05:30 AM

People say such stupid things. When I had my third son people were forever saying "When are you going to have your girl?"
Nit-wits!!!!
I love your story and am so happy you got a Featherweight!!!!!
You are going to have a wonderful time!!! :D:D:D

oldswimmer 03-29-2011 05:47 AM

Maia B 03-29-2011 06:04 AM

Congrats! I have a Centennial, too. Love them all.

cabbagepatchkid 03-29-2011 06:08 AM

Oh boy!! What a great surprise that must have been (the FW...not the babies :D) Get one of those kids to help you post a picture of it :-D

I come from a family of 5 kids and had 4 myself. Then when they were grown I didn't feel as if I was done being a mom so I adopted a couple more  and to keep those 2 company I also foster 3 more. I love having a large family!!!

hairquilt 03-29-2011 06:10 AM

Lucky you, I want one so bad!!

Golly, do the idiots think we get to CHOOSE? Though I guess you can select the sex now if you want to mess with God's plan....

Yes, my friend, I totally agree!!
I have 3 healthy sons and am forever grateful!!
However, my Mom didn't get her wish " I hope you have a daughter just like you when you grow up") ( when I was being bratty hahaha)

dixiebelle162002 03-29-2011 06:18 AM

Big congratulations!!!! I was expecting to see a photo. I love seeing vintage machine.

Wine Woman 03-29-2011 06:25 AM

Congratulations on your new addition. What wonderful children you have. They really tuned into what Mom wanted! If you have blue on the medallion it is likely a Centennial. The other
Centennial that I know of was from Texas State Fair. That would have a band of Red on the medallion and it does say State Fair of Texas.

I found a wonderful book with so much information. Its written by Nancy Johnson-Srebro "Featherweight 221 The Perfect Portable and Its Stitches Across History."

I couldn't stop with one and now have five in my sewing room. They travel well and are used alot! Probably more than my Bernina!! They are sooo sweet and a good machine. Congratulations! Enjoy using it.

kaykwilts 03-30-2011 03:35 AM

If ya'll can bear with me here....I promise photos today....my daughters will take the pics and post it this afternoon.....thanks for your patience

tepee 03-30-2011 03:37 AM

You are so lucky. I dream of finding a Featherweight someday. We are so short on good thrift shops. Where do you live?
tp

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 03-30-2011 04:00 AM

Here, you never see one in a thrift shop. Everyone knows how desireable they are now. I asked at one shop and she said she didn't know what she would do if one was donated but thought she'd put it on e-bay.I found one at my Janome store and am going to look at it today. I hope it's nice because then I'll know it's in mechanically good shape.

What a wonderful gift! Will be looking forward to your pictures.

Scrappy20 03-30-2011 05:30 AM

I'm dreaming of getting a FW one day. I have an old treadle machine that I use and love it but a FW is somewhere in my future

I have 8. People are always saying, "They look so much alike!" I tell them it's because they have the same mother and father! I get the "you know what causes that" too. I say, "Yeah, but who says I want to quit!" Of course now that they are getting older, way older, lol, they are starting now not to look so much alike now. LOL
Congrats on the new machine. Sounds like you are one lucky puppy.

MarieM 03-30-2011 06:50 AM

I got mine this year for Christmas from DH. He is a really good man. Mine is not a Centennial but from what I've heard that makes them more collectible and valuable. You have great kids.

vschieve 03-30-2011 07:53 AM

That is soooo sweet and special; a Centennial and given to you by your kids! Looking forward to a pic!

libber 03-30-2011 07:55 AM

Yes, you have a 'collectors' model. Do you know the birthdate, was it made in the US or UK? Have you read Featherweight 221, The Perfect Portable by Nancy Johnson-Srebro?

kwilter 03-30-2011 08:11 AM

Have some of your wonderful offspring purchase Dave McCallum's book: "Featherweights & I" so you can proceed to properly oil and lube your "new baby" and, of course, it MUST have a name, so do tell the name!

Quiltbeagle 03-30-2011 08:32 AM

Sounds like you have a Centennial model like mine! Don't you just LOVE those little machines?

vschieve 03-30-2011 09:48 AM

http://www.singerco.com/support/serial_numbers.html

Go to this link and you can actually check by serial number the machine's manufacture year.

Glenda Holmes 03-30-2011 10:34 AM

The first featherweights were made in 1933.

redpurselady 03-30-2011 10:54 AM

Glenda - your red FW is gorgeous. What is her name? Mine is Ruby Jewel :-)
