Okay,
So every month I will make a gift for someone out of my stash and give it to them right when it's done instead of waiting for a birthday or holiday. Of course, I can plan on certain projects for upcoming birthdays if I wish.
This will help me start to use what I've already invested in. And, at this time of year, by the time I get motivated to make Christmas gifts, it's too late to get them finished in time.
I think I'll have to come up with something catchy to include referring to my New Year's Resolution when I pass the gift along.
What do you think?

What ever works! Mine is to try to take a couple hours to actually clean the house! I wake up each day with good intentions, but my intentions are always sabotaged by either my computer (like for the past 2 hours!) or my sewing machine!

amma 12-18-2010 01:54 PM

its not Christmas
nor is it your birthday
I was thinking of you
as I do each day

I found this fabric
and without delay
I made you this gift
you can open today

who needs a reason
I just want to say
enjoy this gift
on this un-holiday

:D:D:D

Amma, I love your little poem!!!!

Can I use it to give a gift too?
Did you write it? I need to give credit to someone if I do use it!!

susiequilt 12-18-2010 02:09 PM

That's a super idea for the poem.

amma 12-18-2010 02:17 PM

LOL you can use it, no credit needed :D:D:D

quilting cat 12-18-2010 02:31 PM

I think you'll get lots done that way! :-) Hope it works for you!
The most successful "stash of UFO's" buster I had was the year we moved, when I packed a box of 12 "do it or dump it" UFO's and managed to stick to that rule for the next 12 months. (It hasn't worked since!)
2011 - hmm... 11 projects? Or think binary -- that's just 3 UFO's.

DJ 12-18-2010 03:24 PM

Great idea! Perfect poem!

That is just so cute! I might have to copy that one too, I have taken to giving "just because" gifts instead of a panic/uproar at Xmas and birthdays, sure is a lot less stress and the family/friends say they get more spoiled since I "quit" Xmas and birthdays and did the "just because"

BMP 12-18-2010 03:50 PM

Cute !

mcdaniel023 12-18-2010 04:24 PM

Amma, I love that poem. My sister and I don't exchange gifts, but I saw a panal I had to put in a quilt for her. I also included a few surprises. She got it yesterday and was totally touched. Her facebook thank you this morning made me cry. Sounds like a great resolution to me.

quilt3311 12-19-2010 06:06 AM

My New Years Resolution is "Not to make New Years Resolutions"- Seriously, I'd just break them anyway, so I guess my solution is right for me. No stressing out that way. grin

lots2do 12-19-2010 06:09 AM

Resolutions don't work for me, generally, either. But I thought that this would be one I'd want to do instead of a chore. All of these block of the months, why not a gift of the month? :)

You sound like me!!! But only 2 hours? I am so ashamed!!!(NOT) I enjoy my sewing and computer time.!

Boxer mom 12-19-2010 07:28 AM

Mine is to first, swap rooms for my sewing and bedroom so I can fit my new table that I got for my b-day. Then to finish my UFO's and to promise to complete one before starting a new one. And for the next quilt I make to be for DH.

stichinluvr 12-19-2010 07:46 AM

Amma, Thanks for the poem. I usually do give things away when they are done instead of waiting and this is the perfect poem to add. Last year I planned to clean up my UFO's and they are still here. I just moved and am totally blown away by everything I have so hopefully I'll finish the UFO's and work on my stash.

woody1229 12-19-2010 07:54 AM

I like making quilts not as gifts for a particular event, but for people who 'need' them at a particular time. Someone who's going through a rough patch, taking care of a dying parent, struggling with cancer, in need of a virtual hug and a beautiful, comforting, warming reminder that they are loved! I like your resolution.

clipper35 12-19-2010 08:00 AM

Sounds like me

JudeWill 12-19-2010 08:28 AM

Thanks for the poem, Amma. Love it! I, too, do not have time to make all the gifts by the time I get the inspiration of what I want to make. I don't usually make new year's resolutions, but this year I am making one to make a gift a month for Christmas. Actually, I will have to make more than that. I have 10 grandkids and their parents to sew for. I want to make the guys flannel shirts for next year. Good luck to us all!

quiltinghere 12-19-2010 08:30 AM

AMMA - that's for the poem - you're so talented.

QUILTING CAT - 11 projects for 2011 sounds like a reasonable challenge - I'll have to make my list and post it on my signature line somehow so I can see it and get off the computer and sew!

JILL - sometimes we have to PARENT OURSELVES and not do our fun hobbies (like playing outside when we were kids) until our work (our bedrooms when we were kids) is completed. Seriously! I have to do that sometimes. It even makes me work quicker! Try it! Perfectionism wains when you're in a hurry! :) For me, that's a good thing!

Izaquilter 12-19-2010 08:40 AM

LOL I use to make New Year's resolutions 'to not start any new projects' until I got some of my WIP's done. I did this for several years, promising to work on my WIP's & never did. I finally got frustrated & my next resolution was "to work on anything new that tickled my fancy & create as much havoc as I could in my sewing room" That one worked for me!

catrancher 12-19-2010 09:21 AM

Amma, you are too clever.

The pitz 12-19-2010 11:53 AM

Well...if that is not the cutest poem. I will surely use it when I give my next "for no reason" gift.

Thank God for your talent. Merry Christmas

ket 12-19-2010 12:05 PM

I love this idea and the poem as well. This time last year I was scrambling to make gifts and wearing myself out. Had great plans for getting ahead on this Christmas and in March was diagnosed with breast cancer. Needless to say my sewing fell by the wayside. I am doing great now but have learned to make each day count. Don't put off things you want to do for someone. Do it now. You may not have tomorrow.

Grandma Peg 12-19-2010 12:10 PM

Good luck on your resolution, you'll have to let us know if you stick to it.

candyce 12-19-2010 02:51 PM

This sounds like a grear idea. I have a number of things i "plan" to do, so a resolution to get it done is exactly what I need. Thank you for the idea- I hope you don't mind if I "borrow" itr

Ditto!

Vanuatu Jill 12-19-2010 03:33 PM

Good idea, Quiltinghere, I might try it! I also thought of another resolution--spend as much time actually working on my quilts as I do on this board!!!LOL

vickig626 12-19-2010 03:33 PM

Cool....
