My Old Kentucky Home

Just don't know how I get myself into these things, but - I'm in a small group challenge where all finished blocks are locations in musical pieces. No prizes or ribbons, just a matter of pride. I reached in the bag and pulled out "My Old Kentucky Home". So not too bad, lots of ideas...until now it's time to "create".
H E L P I've found some horse pictures from coloring book pages - one even has the ring of roses on its neck. But there has to be more to My Old Kentucky Home than the Derby. I'd be ever grateful for some ideas.

Blue grass pastures, white rail fences, mint julep, large white hats, wraparound porches...

Not very helpful I'm afraid!

Alison

tobacco and burgoo!

I like the idea of BLUEGRASS fields.

When my older DD was younger she made a picture for me while we were living in Kentucky. One was a green grassy field beside flowing blue water. the other was BLUEgrass and the GREEN River. Somehow I managed to lose it in moving and packing so many times. But it was so cute.

On a more serious note--------------look up the building bearing the name "my old Kentucky home" and you may be able to replicate that building enough to look good. I'm not good at links or I'd try.

I would google the words to the song to get some inspiration.

How about appliqueing the shape of the state? How about the state flower, bird, flag etc?

thimblebug6000 09-02-2012 11:28 AM

I did an image search on google for kentucky skies and there are some interesting shots there, one is a shield of some sort for the Commonwealth of Kentucky maybe you could incorporate some things from history?

TanyaL 09-02-2012 12:50 PM

Don't forget they make some of the best whiskey in the world! And they have a lot of rich history.

Speaking of good whiskey, I bought one I'd never had before last winter when I was in Bardstown. Barton's 1792. Wonderful. You can buy it almost anywhere, but I'd never tried it before.

sandyms 09-02-2012 03:03 PM

And don't forget, Paducah is in Kentucky!! How about some mini quilts strung across the state?

My husband asked me to make a landscape quilt of "my Old Ky Home" to be donated to a charity auction....I had never done a landscape quilt...but stepped up to the challenge, and when I got it finished he couldn't make himself take it, so he made a $$ donation instead! He took it to his office and it hung on his walll...(i was proud that HE couldnt let it go) If I can figure out how to upload a picture, I will.... But I haven't uploaded before.....

Chatty94 09-02-2012 04:38 PM

If anyone has any tips about uploading a picture from my iPad, I would appreciate it....

A whiskey keg? A bottle of Jack Daniels?? The possibilities are endless! I like this angle... ;)

GRAMMYJO....I live in Bardstown KY...check out a link on it...or look up Bardstown Ky...its home of Stephan Foster..The state park and home is less than 3 miles from my home. Bardstown is also it the Bourbon capital of the world. It was just voted "the most beautiful small town in America". Check out some links on it..can't be too hard...wishing you luck and would LOVE to se your completed block...Jim

Does the block have to be appliqued?
Barbara's book Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns has several pieced blocks that have the word "Kentucky" in their name.

All these ideas are great, can you get a grass gab.
then app the other items around. Please, show us a picc

kyquiltlover1942 09-04-2012 03:08 AM

My "od Kentucky Home" is a very simple building. I would think it would be easy enough to adapt for a quilt. I am sure there are pics on line. Also don't foget the twin spires at Churchill Downs. Good luck and post when your done.

Mammoth Cave, Natural Bridge, Cumberland Falls (only Moonbow in the Northern Hemisphere), Jefferson Davis Monument, Fort Knox, and Daniel Boone National Forest.

coopah 09-04-2012 03:32 AM

Since you live in Leesburg, how about a day trip to Stephen Foster Memorial in Suwanee, FL? There are dioramas to look at, antebellum style museum and beautiful carillon bells that play some of Foster's tunes. After a trip there, you'd have inspiration. Take a detour over to Trenton with its quilt shop and genuine old time soda fountain. Just an idea...love day trips!

I'm from Kentucky, the house in my old Kentucky home is a large salt-box like hous with twin chimneys, one on each end of the house. The house sitting on a hill with blue(it isn't really blue grass, it is very thick dark green grass, the humidity in Kentucky keeps it rich) with huge trees - no evergreens- with perhaps a couple of whiskey barrels near the house would be an appriopriate representation. My grandmother had large old whiskey barrels at each of the four downspouts on her house as rainbarrels. Her house was similar in construction as the old Kentucky home, but her's was white with a black roof on only one chimney.

mimiquilter 09-04-2012 04:11 AM

Kentucky is home to "good bourbon, fast horses and wild women"...that may expand your horizons a little, especially the good bourbon and wild women.

cjaneky 09-04-2012 04:26 AM

Living in ky for the last 30 years, you think of Stephen Foster's song "My Old Kentucky Home, Churchill downs horse racing, Burbon distilleries , My Old Kentucky Home dinner train, coal mines, Calumet Farm, with all the rolling pastures, white fences, big barns, tobacco fields, farms, the small towns, the mountains, google up Bardstown, which was voted " most down home town" in the USA just last month... things here are so laid back, most people are friendly, I could go on but hopes some of this helps

Wonnie 09-04-2012 05:20 AM

Maybe I'm wrong but I think most of the rail fences are black....correct me if I'm wrong.

kydeb 09-04-2012 05:36 AM

Anything horse related, bourbon, Abe Lincoln, or musical - especially bluegrass and country. Lots of things :) Good luck! Can hardly wait to see the photos of what you come up with!!

There are white and black fences - just depends on the farmer's preference! The fences at Calumet Farms are white. (Calumet is an icon.) Either white or black would true to Kentucky!!

KyKaren1949 09-04-2012 06:15 AM

I live in Kentucky! Kentucky is known for Barbecue and Burgoo as in a large black steaming kettle, our Bourbon is world known, They make the Corvette in Bowling Green, KY, The Louisville Slugger bat is made in Louisville, of course horses in the Bluegrass area with the Kentucky Horse Park, Mammoth Cave is in Cave City, Churchill Downs in Louisville, The Quilt Museum is in Paducah, Amish in Munfordville/Marion area, Kentucky Lake/Lake Barkeley, Buffalo once roamed our state, Sheep and Mutton dishes, corn, tobacco and soybeans are widely grown, The Ohio River is our northern border and the Mississippi River borders the western part of our state, University of Kentucky and Univeristy of Louisville Basketball, The Cardinal is our state bird, we raise cattle, hogs, sheep, the state is a large part agricultural so farmed fields would be good, we are a commonwealth instead of a state, Goldenrod is our state flower, Barn Quilts are everywhere in eastern KY and are growing fast in western KY where I live. black tobacco barns are found in KY and I don't believe anywhere else, Mohammed Ali is from Louisville (boxing gloves),etc. Hope this helps you out!! I sure do want to see your quilt when it's finished!!!

Not that anyone cares, but I saw a MOONBOW just outside Calhoun, Ky 30 or so years ago around 9 PM after a rain.

There is some really good information about KY on this page, ie state bird, state flag, etc:

Wow I am humbled by the response. You all (Y'all) have given me some great ideas. A friend here gave me some pieces of fabric that I am going to use. I printed out the outline of Kentucky. I'll increase the size and applique a piece of "blue grass" to it. Then I think I'll use a tan-colored horse in a pasture and try to find a picture of the cabin. I love the bourbon angle, and of course Abe Lincoln. I did google Kentucky and My Old Kentucky Home before I posted, but the ideas just were falling into place. Now they're just zooming. You guys are terrific! Thanks a whole bunch.

jclinganrey 09-04-2012 08:27 AM

I did a Google search (what a great tool!) and came across a quilt pattern by the name, 'My Old Kentucky Home' by Bonnie Blue quilts. Don't know how inspired you are - - - maybe buy a copy of the pattern and make one of the blocks?? Check out her site. You might get some other ideas. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Quilt on!

Jane

[QUOTE=alisonquilts;5485672]Blue grass pastures, white rail fences, mint julep, large white hats, wraparound porches...

I agree. My grandson lives there and it is all of the above...lots of beautiful pasture and white rail fences with lovely old large white houses and wraparound porches and flower galore!. Beautiful countryside.

fayeberry 09-04-2012 10:54 AM

How about a bottle of bourbon?

grammyjo 09-04-2012 11:29 AM

By the time I get this done, I'll need one!!

Ya know I think I'd copy the song onto muslin , on the printer , then use those in the quilt. Also , print out some of the old pictures of the plantations and use them. I think I'd also use some of the old dresses like in Gone with the wind. JUst my thinking.
