Need a Boys Quilt pattern - something VERY unusual...but cute
I will be working on my next grandsons quilt soon and I am finding it a little challenging to come up with something fun and different. I don't want a patchwork (just blocks) or something that is landscape or a persons portrait - can't think of the name of these...
So please post some pictures or links of something I might want. Thanks! |
How old is he? I absolutely LOVE the different stars I've seen posted. I think my favorite was called Lonestar? And the Mariner compass? So beautiful.
|
I am in the process of trying to design a quilt for my youngest DGS. I am thinking about a games theme, maybe chutes and ladders, with his name across the top or bottom.
|
I like boat quilts. Here is one I found online-

Maybe a trip to the library would help. I know my library has a lot of quilt books, several of which are just kids' quilts.

I just bought a cool alien space pattern -- don't know how appropriate for a newborn, but my 2.5 DGS loved it.
Here is the link -- scroll down the page. http://ruthsquilting.com/patterns/ |
Here is a link to a robot pattern-I am in the process of making it for my DGS who is almost 2. Its turning out really cute! :)

I think this one is cute

There are some great choices here...does anyone have something with dogs?
|
Another snakes quilt...I made this for our grandson when he got a youth bed. It's about 58" x 68" with the suggested borders, but could be made larger.
It was a free pattern from South Seas Imports, but may not be available on the net anymore. I have the pdf file and could email it. http://pair.com/threets/goodnesssnakes1.jpg |
There was a very cute Dog pattern in Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting magazine last year? I think it was an extra pdf to download. The dogs ears are 3-D and very cute. The pattern was called Dog Daze and was a companion to Feline Frenzy another adorable pattern. Try their site and see if you can get it. OR if you buy their magazine look through your back issues for the maker and try her web site.

I made a BUNCH of HST with one half of each HST the same background fabric. I used brights for the other halves. I then laid them out in a zigzag pattern and made a 3-D type snake head to put in the seams at one end. I will try to upload a picture, but I am very technologically challenged.

I think I found one for another grandson who is 10...he LOVES dogs. http://www.amazon.com/Java-House-Muc.../dp/B005BG2G9Q This was stinking expensive though!
still undecided about the new one coming still. Love the ideas your posting - gets me so excited. |
I love this quilt. The quilting is so perfect for it:

Saw this dog quilt made up at a quilt show last weekend. It is adorable...wish I could get started on it myself, but too many projects already waiting in line :). It's called Gone to the Dogs by judydiditdesigns: http://www.thecrazyquilter.com/Items...tothedogs.html

I am intrigued by I Spy quilts. I think they would be great for visual discrimination, vocabulary development and lots of fun as a game for toddlers. If you google images I Spy quilts you will find lots of variations. I am making this one. The tutorial is here: http://happyquiltingmelissa.blogspot...-tutorial.html

I love doing zoo animals for babies...anything animal...kids and parents seem to like them a lot...

This is one I made last year for a co-worker. Very simple, just nine-patches and sail boats. The alternating blocks are half square triangles but the pattern just asked for plain blocks. And the piano key border was just to make it bigger. It is 64" x 64"

Boy quilt
I'm making a MCW quilt for my 5 yo GS. I'm using denim for the circles and a fire truck print for the squares inside. It's very cute.
|
I love the patterns by Country Quilter.

Boy quilt
I don't know what a MCW quilt is, can you please enlighten me?
|
MCW stands for Mock Cathedral Window quilt. It is when you use circles and sew them together on the inside straight lines to form blocks. The circle edge or curve part is then folded over towards the center front to form scallops. The scallops can be the design itself or a square of fancy fabric can be put in the frame before the cuves are sewn down. There are some nice examples on Quiltingboard but also on the net. You might find them under MCW or circle quilts.

Morning everyone :)
One of the easiest quilts for a boy is to find bits of fabric with cars, trucks, construction kinds of vehicles.... Make a nine-patch with those. However, the center square will have an embroidered tool that you have done. I sashed the quilt with red. I did one of these for my newest grandson over 14 years ago and he STILL has it on his bed....altho, now it needs some restitching. LOL (I found all sorts of tool pictures in color books and redrew them for the tool square. ) There was one shown on here the other day that was a lightening bolt. That would make a wonderful boy quilt, too. Have fun! |

I have some experience with this. I'm a mom of five and three are boys so I have made quite a few boy quilts. I have done the young eye spy with blocks and sashing. I did a homespun and old time sports theme trip around the world. I did a Halloween one because one of my sons love Halloween. i just did a Army theme quilt because his was the I spy and hes now 13 so hes outgrown that one...he still has it on his bed tho. My oldest son wants another quilt and hes requesting an outlined star quilt he liked the stained glass effect...but it will not be a bright one. I love homespun for boys because I think they are timeless but my boys have all different tastes. I also did a small dresser topper for my son with blocks that I call ninja star blocks and all the boys love those. Here's a picture of the last one.

That is adorable! I need that pattern but will wait till I get a grandson... !

I love the simplicity of the D9P and have discovered if you use theme fabric for the corners, and co-ordinating fabrics for the rest, it makes a fun interesting quilt. I spy works great this way, and can be done in fabrics that are not babyish.

I made this, which I consider a boy's quilt, by using charm squares of a boyish fabric with a contrasting background fabric (the red dots). Very simple but cute. I used one charm pack for this 42" square quilt. You could make a twin bed size with two charm packs and some more borders.
|
Just another thought to share. I love I Spy quilts as I said earlier, but I just wanted to mention that they can be made appropriate to any age. I have even made them for adults, just using their favorite things for the fabric selections. Hugsss and smiles and happy creating!!

Check this out: http://www.trianglesonaroll.com/snakes.aspx - It on the triangles on a roll website, but I'm sure you can figure out how to adapt it without the triangles on a roll. I just think looks fun and it's just adorable. Enjoy.

Lat summer I made matching quilts for twin nieces, but change the colors and it would be great for a boy...Gone to the Dogs by judydidit. Also had fun making Critters by Brandywine Designs
|
Last year I downloaded free a pattern called Royal Critters, from Wyndham (sp?) fabrics to make a quilt for an expected newborn. It turned out great and I used fat quarters and scraps for it. It is perfect for a newborn with the bright colors and cute critters.:)

I find that 3-D Pinwheels unique & very easy. I made one for a mature lady friend & she thinks I'm the most clever person she knows. LOL. I used a solid block with every other pinwheel block.
