Need help picking out a backing color!
 

Hello from Blizzard-y Minnesota! Spent the last 2 days sewing because we are socked in here at the farm with over 10 inches of heavy wet snow and major wind and drifts. Not pleasant at all. At least we didn't lose power!

I finished my "Lovely" top and am now stuck on what backing color to order. I'm going to scallop the outer border and bind with black. I plan on FMQ lots of feathers and swirls on my DSM. I love all the colors in this quilt but which one should I pick? I can order any of the fabrics shown in the top. I keep gravitating towards the solid blue or green that has the little squares in it but wonder if it's too 'solid' which can sometimes show mistakes in FMQ more than a busier fabric. Then again I think having little (or big) flowers all over the back would be too much.

Would welcome your thoughts as to color of backing, thread color to use and FMQ suggestions!!

I'd do either the green or purple/blue in the border.

If you can get enough of the border fabric, use that. It will be a continuation of a gorgeous top. froggyintexas

I don't know, but your quilt and the colors you used are so pretty!

I would also like the border fabric on the back. Another thought is to look for a back that is predominately in the same color as the color of the thread you plan to quilt with--this helps hide boo boos in the quilting stitches.

Use the color your instinct is telling you to use. While a busy backing may hide quilting problems, it can sometimes overwhelm the quilt top.

To make quilting mistakes less obvious on the back, use a bobbin thread color that matches your backing, and whatever color you already have planned on the front.

Your quit is lovely lovely and you did a wonderful job. I live in Montana and this is one of the worst winters in many many years. We just get rid of most of our snow and roads are drivable and then we get more. Saturday night and Sunday we are getting a bunch more like 10 inches the last one was 16 inches. So I hear you loud and clear.

Like many of the others, I lean toward using the border fabric on the back. It's such pretty fabric, and if you use it on the back it certainly won't compete with the front.

But if that's not possible, I'd go with any of the darker blue'ish or purple'ish fabrics. If they're not available, you could use a small scale print in either of those colors (or predominantly black) on the back. Your choice of a binding fabric might be more important than your choice of a backing. But then I'm someone who forgets to look at the back of a quilt.

Also dealing with the Minnesota snow … but also taking time to appreciate its beauty!

Use the Border Fabric! With black binding, it could be reversible for a little change up.
