Ok, so I'm gonna be brave and post my latest quilt top. Keep in mind, I'm still fairly new, this only being my 4th one ever. Far, far from perfect. Anyway, so I spray basted and loosely pin basted too since I don't quite trust the spray to hold.
This is to be my first ever hand quilted try. I've only SITD before on the machine. I would really like to try something other than that but cannot figure out what pattern to try with the triangles. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks! (sorry for the pic, didn't have hubby home to hold it up for me) |
I don't hand quilt but I just had to comment on what a beautiful quilt this is!
Beautiful! I would do outline quilting but that's what I like - emphasizes the piecing.
I only free motion quilt so I can't help with suggestions, but it is really a beautiful quilt. I know whatever you do will look wonderful.
i would try a vine-y thing in the sashing with spirals in the pinwheels. Just a suggestion.
First your quilt is wonderful. I am concerned that the spry basting will make it difficult to hand quilt. Puts a lot of drag on the needle. Perhaps someone who does hand quilting can comment on this. As to quilting pattern look at some circular patterns or stars or flowers that incorporate the windmill. hth.

Very pretty!!

What a fabulous start. Your top is beautiful! And taking on hand quilting warms my heart. It's what I always do.
I would go out an get a roll of 1/4" quilting tape. Decide what elements you want to quilt . You don't have to do all of them. I would probably just do the "backgrounds" ( 1 from the corners) and the pieces just outside the pinwheels. That should be close enough. Put the tape next to the seam line and quilt along the tape around the shapes. Learning to hand quilt takes time and patience. Lots of straight lines should be good to practice on. Watch the miracle happen as your stitches get to a consistent length. Small stitches take time. Be patient. And proud of your progress as you go along. Good luck in whatever you choose to do! PS - I have never used spray basting. I always do it by hand - with thread. |

Hubby got home so got him to hold it up for a better view.
I am a little concerned that I will be able to hand quilt through the basting spray. I did use it very lightly since I put a few pins in as well. Thanks for the suggestions. |
I love it... I love all the colors. I can only SITD or outlne as well on my machine.. I used to hand quilt, but hands just won't do that any more. But if I were going to hand stitch, I would still outline all the blocks and all the triangles in the block. But I would do something curves in the sashing. Don't put to much movement in your blocks. You don't want to take away the beauty of the block.

A very nice lady just pointed out to me a mistake I made. Got a piece out on a middle (pink) block. Dang it! lol
At least I know before it was quilted and can fix it now if I choose. Really appreciate the help! |
beautiful top i love the color combination
I have hand quilted through spray baste and didn't have any problems.
Me too....love the quilt and I would outline quilt it..
:-P No matter how it's draped it's very nice (mild word) I mean really, really looks good. Whatever you do I am sure that it can only make it better.
You sure don't look like a beginner!!! Your quilt is beautiful!!
i'd outline quilt, too and do cross-hatching in the sashing
Love your quilt ... beautiful job.
You've done a wonderful job of piecing. Love your blocks and as for the quilting...I am always in a quandry myself,so I will leave that to those who know a whole lot better than me.

Ok, tore it out, got it fixed :D
It would always have bugged me if I'd left it. Had to do it by hand but that's ok. Thanks again for pointing it out to me. |
Oh what a beautiful quilt. I would probably outline within the triangles. Then something a little curvy in the sashing.
But I am not very creative when it comes to the quilting. My first love is piecing the top. Chris |
You did a great job. I would outline each piece. I find hand quilting to be relaxing, but I usually machine quilt cuz I'm always in a hurry to start the next one!

If this is a quilt for yourself, I wouldn't worry about that one triangle. Of course, if you are making it for someone else, I guess it would be important to fix. I really had to look hard to see the error. It doesn't take away from the beauty of the quilt! Love it!
I'm always stymied by which pattern to use also....and what color thread would look good...but I just had to say, what a LOVELY quilt you made! It is stunning....good job!
Hi alderdweller, All I can say is WOW!!!!!! You did a fanastic job. I am a novice quilter myself. The first quilt I made was in the Bear Paw block and I hand quilted. It is not the best job but I am proud of it. Keep up the good work. Jeanniebelle

I really like your quilt  I like outline quilting on scrappy blocks...makes them stand out.
I've hand quilted through the apray baste and had no problems. Love your quilt! I'd outline quilt it too.
Someone told me that if your blocks are all straight lines, your quilting should be curved lines and vica versa.

Hi I am new here, I have been quilting for over 30 years.
I also own a long arm quilting machine. I just wanted to say that I hand quilt also, and baste my quilt on my longarm. I used to do this for customers for about $30.00. Saves lots of back breaking pinning and bending. Also wanted to say that the quilt looks great, and I would not fix the patch out of place. I love uniqueness in a quilt and rarely fix mistakes. I leave them in place for a reminder of how only God is perfect. I agree with the other hand quilter, straight lines are a great way to begin learning handquilting. If you begin with lots of twisting and turning, because of your inexperience, you may not want to continue. Good luck |
Leave it in...let future generations wonder "what was she thinking" and "why did she do that"!!
Your quilt top is gorgeous! |

Wow! Beautiful Quilt!
BEAUTIFUL QUILT!! I just hand quilted a baby quilt that was spray basted. No problems.
Very nice quilt - keep up the good work.
I couldn't agree more. Great quilt, and I think you'll love hand quilting and the look you'll achieve, no matter what pattern you choose.
What a lovely quilt. Hand quilting it will make it all the prettier! Outline the triangles would be my thoughts. Just lovely.
