Need help with some quilt decisions

I am making this quilt for my doc's receptionist who is due on July 4th. I asked her what she would like and she asked for Sun, Moon, Stars in dark colors. Well, I went to my stash and found stuff from a previous project from over 10 years ago. I added the aqua to make the star blocks stand out. Then I added the sashing to calm down the aqua, since she wanted dark. Now my dilemma is what to do for a border. I have NONE of the star point fabric left, and NONE of the Sun, moon, stars fabric. The backing will be wizards, because that is what I have lots of (left from another project). My options are the aqua, the dark stars, or wizards, and another piece I found that might do.

And here is the other piece of fabric I have that could be used:

Maybe a narrow (1/2 inch or less) yellow or gray? narrow border and then a wider border of the dark blue?

It's very nice - I like your color choices - the aqua is perfect with that.

I don't care for the light wizard fabric for the outside border. Just my opinion on that.

You could just bind it at the size it is - it looks "complete" to me right now - if that would be "big enough"

I like both these fabics. I think if it were me, I would use a 2nd border of the wizards, cut larger than the blue you have already. Then I would put a 3rd border of the dark blue in your third picture. I really like the dark blue.

I agree withbearisgray!! Small YELLOW/GOLD border and then the Wizards!!!! I too have the exact same fabric and might ''copy'' your idea!!

Is there metallic in those fabrics? I'm trying to decide if I recognize the aqua fabric. It looks a lot like a Stargazers fabric by Robert Kaufman (which is still in print; we carry it).

What about pulling in a narrow stripe of the golden yellow color? And then putting something darker around it?

If you are working with metallics, Blank Quilting has a marvelous golden yellow metallic blender that might work well:

I also think a yellow/gold border would make the quilt "pop." I would also add the wizard fabric as the last border. Love it, and love all your fabric choices!

spokanequilter 06-04-2012 07:01 AM

I agree - make it pop with yellow or gold...

grann of 6 06-04-2012 07:41 AM

Thanks everyone. Problem is, I haven't been able to find any gold/yellow that looks right with it. And yes. the aqua is Kaufmans' with a small metallic star in it. They also have it in dark blue. I still have some of the aqua, enough for a border or binding. The other stuff I have had for years, they also have metallic gold in them. The wizards has metallic silver. I am trying to do this without purchasing anything else. I thought of a 1/2" of the aqua, then the dark blue or wizards. I am not sure I like the wizards for the front, though.

I'll check out the gold blender.

bearisgray 06-04-2012 07:44 AM

Maybe a pale blue - that picks up or blends with the star fabrics? for a narrow border? instead of gold or yellow.

Gold or yellow is tricky and has to be 'just right' for it to work.

I like this choice. My second choice would be the other stars fabric. It looks great so far!

The pale blues didn't work either. That is how I ended up with the aqua. I may just go buy a yard of the dark blue that is the same is the aqua. Then put a 1/2" of aqua, then 2" of the dark blue. I got that at Joann's. I just want to get this done as soon as possible, as I have other commitments coming.

bearisgray 06-04-2012 08:37 AM

I still find it surprising - that with the many fabrics I do have on hand - sometimes I still can't find one that is 'just right' for a project.

justflyingin 06-04-2012 09:05 AM

I tend to like dark as the last border at the edge just because it seems to anchor the quilt for me.

grann of 6 06-04-2012 10:26 AM

Bearisgray, it happens to me all the time. I just got back from Joann's and was able to find a yellow/gold that I think will work as a narrow sashing strip. I got another dark one too, but I don't think I am going to like it as well as what I already have. Thank goodness for 40% off coupons.

Quilter7x 06-04-2012 10:37 AM

Oh good, I'm glad you found a yellow/gold that will hopefully work. I think that will be a perfect accent to this quilt.

Maggie_Sue 06-04-2012 03:41 PM

Love to see how you finish this.

JustAbitCrazy 06-04-2012 03:54 PM

Very pretty quilt! I wouldn't put the wizard fabric in any borders, though, since none of it is already in the quilt top (jmho). I like all your other choices. The aqua, or any other coordinating color as a first narrow border, followed by a wider one of that dark blue fabric with small stars, would look great. Nice job!

ube quilting 06-04-2012 04:01 PM

I like it just the way it is. If I were goint to add a border I would use the aqua and then bind it with that wonderful Dark Star material. This quilt is really cool!
peace

QuiltnLady1 06-04-2012 04:24 PM

I like the idea of the yellow/gold -- you could even do just one of those small folded tucks around the blue, then add the dark color that you show in your picture. I would keep the wizards in the back -- they are pretty busy and I think they would distract from the rest of the top rather than finish the top.

grann of 6 06-04-2012 04:41 PM

I will post pics tomorrow after I get the final border on. The only reason I am even using the wizards is because that is what I have. I will put it just on the back, and that will make it reversible. I figure wizards kinda go with the celestial theme, and this is for a boy, soooooo.......

jeanneb52 06-05-2012 02:49 AM

I think a gold border...

goodwitch 06-05-2012 03:38 AM

I would add a narrow (1 1/2 or 2 inch wide) yellow/gold border and then a wider (3-4 inch) border of the dark blue stars. The wizards is to light and takes away from the stars, but I agree it would be great for the backing.

BeverlyH 06-05-2012 03:48 AM

I like the dark with the stars. How pretty and what a great idea to use the wizard on the back.

nancyw 06-05-2012 04:01 AM

I believe I would use a narrow yellow/gold and then a wider border of your second choice. She didn't ask for wizards. On the back is fine but I wouldn't put them on the front.

tlstick 06-05-2012 04:18 AM

oh yes go with the yellow/gold from favoritefabric.com looks perfect. The aqua is just to much gizmos with whats in your center blocks. Will be great for backing.

That's exactly what I would have said.

Just saw this thread and as I was reading it, before I got to the end and the photo of your beautiful finished quilt, I envisioned it finished just as you did it. I love it ... great job! :-)

Latrinka 06-05-2012 05:48 AM

I vote for the wizards or a yellow that matches the suns.

I agree. I'd use a narrow border (as much as an inch) of the gold in the moons and then the dark star blue.

Delta 06-05-2012 06:02 AM

I love the dark blue with stars for the border myself. great job.

Very pretty! Perfect for a boy, too. She will love it...and he will, too, as he grows up.

mommessy 06-05-2012 06:07 AM

I have something very very similar, almost the same. I have around 3 yards or so. I'm in Maryland. If you want me to send it to you, I will, but I'm literally getting ready to go out the door on a quilt retreat. If you can wait till the weekend, I'll send you a picture.

sahm4605 06-05-2012 06:37 AM

if you have a joanns nearby they have this great stary fabric that would be great as a boarder. I have used it in about 6 different quilts for little boys incuding my ds's twin size bed quilt. it has all the colors in it and is really perdy.

JustAbitCrazy 06-05-2012 06:42 AM

The finished quilt is perfect. That narrow yellow border is just what it needed. Beautiful!

carolynjo 06-05-2012 06:58 AM

Gorgeous quilt so far. I'd go for some yellow also.

bearisgray 06-05-2012 07:04 AM

Your finished quilt - posts #28 and #29 on page 3 - is great!

Thank you for posting the pictures.
