I have the chance to pick up an antique, still working Singer model 15-91 with its art-deco cabinet for $20. I know its not a featherweight, but the web sites say that it is a dependable, work horse machine popular with quilters. I saw on eBay where they are selling for $199 and up. Is this a desirable machine? Should I go for it? Thanks for your help!

YES, absolutely grab it. Quick, before someone else beats you to it.
|
Even if not working, won't be that much to get her going again. Yes, grab it.
|
NOW NOW NOW. You will never regret it. It will sew through everything you can possibly throw at it, and makes a beautiful stitch. GO for it!
|
It's a great machine and if you change your mind I bet you could make money on your investment.

Well, I went ahead and got it! The light is burnt out and she's a little dirty, but she took right off when I plugged her in. Whole lot of attachments, the binding foot still has binding in it LOL! and a separate buttonholer. I think we'll be great friends.

I'm glad you got it. You will love her.

good price; if the cabinet is in good shape, it alone is worth $20.
|
Glad you got it, its a great workhorse of a machine!
|
A marvelous deal you have gotten! She is a great machine :) Congrats on your find.
|
I love sewing with my old girls.
|
Great...now just remember you can not leave these plugged in. Even if you turn of the light, the foot control is still drawing juice and it can get HOT....
|
The old sewing machines are great. Now that you have it, check online for a local sewing machine repair shop to get a replacement bulb for the machine. They can check out the machine for you (if you are not comfortable doing it yourself) and let you know if there are any problems with it.
Other than the wiring and belts most older sewing machines are pretty dependable. These days there are attachments for all the old machines that can make the machines do almost anything you want to do (including zig zag and buttonholes) - just no fancy stitches. Congrats on your new machine and have fun using it! |
What a bargain. She looks good to me!
|
She is purrrty. Great price and a cabinet too!

Holy Catfish! Consider yourself very lucky. I found a 15-90, paid $113 and was just tickled to death to get it for that price, so you stole yours. If you hadn't posted that you already had gotten it, I was going to say "RUN" don't let it escape.
|
OMG 20 bucks??? She is a beauty!!!!!!!! I love mine even though I paid a lot more than you did !! hee hee
Have fun :D:D |

Wonderful looking machine - (I think I have one or two of that model :) )
I agree with the posts about UNPLUGGING the older machines when not in use. You never know about the wiring on *50+* year old machines! Never really thought about the foot pedal still being live...I never trusted the old wires. I agree that us lovers of old machines should purchase them if we see them at "GREAT" prices...and pass our good luck finding on to others if we already have enough machines in the house and garage and basement and shed. If I saw this machine for $20 I would not have taken my hands off it until it was in the car! Congratulations!!!!! |

I have one I got at a yard sale for $10.00 15 yrs ago. love it. |
I just happened into a Goodwill and spotted an old Singer 15-91. It was in perfect condition in a beautiful cabinet! The price was $9.99. I was so excited, I would not leave it since there were 3 other people stalking around it. I had my husband go up to the cashier while I stood there protecting my find. I thought it needed a new belt but found out that it is "motor-driven" not needing a belt. We brought it home, polished it up, oiled according to the instruction book and greased it with Singer lubricant we bought. What a find! Hope you decided to buy it. Pauline

LOVE LOVE mine!!! You will become good friends I am sure

Run before I beat you to it.
