LOL, my brain sometimes goes into reverse also. But her BIL could be her husband's brother.

My first was an old Singer portable that my mother bought me for high school graduation. I think she paid <$20. It got me through college where I sewed quite a bit. When I got on the board here, I went looking for it. It had been stuck in an old garage and was only good for metal recycling. I really hated that.

They are workhorses. They're just my preference and others have theirs. Try out the one you think you want. You'll know!

I've seen older Vikings that are going strong but I have one five years old and I find my self using it less and less and I have to have it serviced often. I just bought a Juki, I've only had it a few days but so far it has been a dream come true, but it was close to $1000.
I'd start with the Brother, I have a friend who used one like that for sewing classes because it is so light weight. It's a sweet little machine. If she gets really into it and wants something later, it would be a good graduation present .

I bought a Brother XR4040 on ebay for $69. I bought it so I would have a lightweight machine to take to classes. Anyhow, the original price was $169, you might want to look there. It came with the same 25 yr. warranty.

Spelled machine wrong in the title....lol. Can't edit that, sorry.

Just, whatever u do, don't buy a demomstator. no matter the sale!
Headaches from others' misuse will not be worth the money u save.

Just gave my Singer Simple to 2 little friends-highly recommend it for Price-(less than the one you mentioned) and the fact that you can abuse it as a beginner and it forgives you!!! Good luck with your choice

GracieMae,

You said that you were happy that you did not have to use a foot pedal, does it have a knee pedal? Just wondering as I am not familiar with this machine.

I love my little Janome that I bought for my daughter to use when she comes over. Bought it on sale for less than $100 but I don't remember what the non-sale price was.
