How do you keep your bobbins from becoming a big mess of tangled threads???

MelodyWB 08-26-2011 11:15 PM

You know the little rubber things you buy to put between your toes when you do a pedicure..I use them for my bobbins !!

sueisallaboutquilts 08-27-2011 03:27 AM

Melody- that is such an awesome idea!!!!!! Thanks :D

mmdquilts 08-27-2011 03:30 AM

That is such a great idea Melody! I use the tiny rubber bands for kids hair.

Glassquilt 08-27-2011 03:39 AM

I have a bobbin box I bought.

Cybrarian 08-27-2011 03:49 AM

I buy the inexpensive bobbin boxes from Joanns (use the coupons unless on sale) and the cheap tiny stretchy hair bands. Big bag at Walmart a couple dollars and I can at least color code by general color. I use white ones on my multicolor ones.

dd 08-27-2011 04:29 AM

I use the tiny hair bands to color coordinate but the dr. I work for uses rubber bands to keep the bobbin with the spool. Not exactly sure how. I think she puts the rubber band thru the bobbin hole loops it then puts the big loop around the spool, I think. I said it can still unravel but she says it doesn't.

sewmuchmore 08-27-2011 04:51 AM

Hubby bought a round clear tube something you would out on a small water pump. I cut it off the size I need small enough to fix inside the bobbin then cut it open side it on the bobbin. :P

I use Bobbin Mates and Bobbin Wraps as I put my thread on spool racks that hang on my wall. I got mine at Clotilde.com but they are available everywhere on the internet

These keep the bobbins attached to the spools

I put mine on the shelf in my Bernina case. You can also just gently pull about a 4 inch tail piece of thread down along between the bobbin side and the thread mass. It will stay in the valley until pulled out again.

I use the tiny childrens hair bands? They are stretchy/terry. You can get a huge amount of them at walmart for 2 or 3 dollars.

These are what I mean. Don't buy them at quilt shops. You can get the same thing at almost any store in the children's hair band/accessories dept. Much cheaper!

calla 08-27-2011 07:55 PM

yup those $$$ store hair bands, without the metal thingies...........calla

mmonohon 08-27-2011 07:58 PM

I love my bobbin savers. I have two; one lays next to my embroidery machine and I have my second one hanging from a screw near my regular sewing machine. Life would be impossible without them.

This is what I use as well. They have them at the dollar store as well.

??? This sounds interesting, but I don't quite understand. Could you describe one more time please?

applique 08-28-2011 04:53 AM

I use multiple bobbin boxes since I wind over 100 bobbins periodically.

meanmom 08-28-2011 04:53 AM

I love love my bobbin savers. One of the best investments in sewing notions I have. I got mine at either JoAnns or Hancocks with a coupon. Keeps bobbins together and they don't unwind.

Another great lady on this site had sent me some tiny terry hair bands to try and they were great.
I found a pack of 200 for $1.00 at the Dollar General in all kinds of colors. I even try to match the color of the hair band to the thread and they are fantastic. They just slip right over the bobbin beautifully.
I embroider so I even put all the white terry bands on those bobbins to distinguuish them.
And the price fit me better than the fancy bobbin covers.

I just keep some in a plastic box...but I do have a couple of the round rubber ones that you just stick the bobbin in and you can see what color they are. I haven't tried the hair band ones but if it ever comes to that I will! Keep the cheaper version ideas coming!

Bobbin savers are the best if you drop it you won't lose the bobbins all over the floor. I have one for embroidery and regular sewing.

I use a 7-day pill container that has straight sides. Each day holds 4 bobbins securely and I can see the colors of the thread through the lids and which days have empty bobbins.

go to the dollar store, and buy a package of the tiny pony tail holders for kids. they are amazing!

Bobbin buddies http://jhittlesewing.funoverload.com/sewing/catalog.php

skjack 08-28-2011 06:09 AM

I use the bobbin donuts. It will hold lots of bobbins. there are 2 colors (red, blue and purple) I have a different color for each machine so know which bobbins are which. thread stays on bobbins. Can drop it and they don't come out. I also bought one with master piece thread in it for applique many colors to have for traveling.

ShirlinAZ 08-28-2011 06:14 AM

Goody Ouchless Ponytailers. I also use them on my embroidery thread and any other thread that doesn't have a thread holder.

ShirlinAZ 08-28-2011 06:15 AM

Sorry, double post.

quiltmom04 08-28-2011 06:22 AM

I put my spools and the corresponding bobbin in a 2" x 3" zip bag. They don't get tangled and I don't have to look for a bobbin that goes with the thread. Then I keep the 'warm' colors in one plastic bin, the 'cool' colors in another.

jitkaau 08-28-2011 06:56 AM

The best bobbin keeper I have found is the rubber tower one that I know you can buy from Nancy's Notions. It is coloured green and lime green.

BECOOLWRAPS 08-28-2011 07:55 AM

I use an ice cube tray - 2 bobbins per "cube" and I can see all of the colors and grab instantly without undoing anything - LOVE IT!

I tried several methods then was at my local quilt shop. they have these bobbin holders that look like doughnuts with a larger center hole. You simply put the bobbin into the outer shell and they stay put. Place the free thread side down and they stay untangled until you pull them out to use. I absolutely love these things. They are made of rubber and cost about 7$ each. Great idea. I wish I had thought of it.

lillybeck 08-28-2011 09:54 AM

I used to use the small hair things that stretch but I have found that the conatainers that hold test strips for sugar are idea. I can get 4 to 5 in ;one and just do up several colors and mark the container. I do not have to staop to rewind bobbins this way.

dsch 08-28-2011 10:17 AM

I got 300 of the tiny hair bands at my local Dollar Store-of course, they were only a dollar! Could go to WM & get 200 for $3-if I wanted to spend more. :)

I use these too.

I use Handi Bobs from Clotilde. Here's the link...

http://www.clotilde.com/detail.html?...4794&cat_id=93

then I store the thread / bobbin combo in these boxes..

http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/p...PRODID=prd1045

Love that I can just pick up the box and head out to a workshop and not have to think about what color thread to bring in advance - just grab and go!

I love them too. I bought one at a quilt show and got another one at a shop a while ago . I fill about ten of white and cream bobbins and put them in one and the other one I have color thread. I often spilled my bobbin box and they would go all over. Now you can drop them and they stay put. It's a really great gadget.

franc36 08-28-2011 11:45 AM

After reading these postings, I ordered the bobbin savers combo from Nancy's Notions. I have 3 now, one for embroidery bobbins, one for sewing bobbins, and one for quilting bobbins. When my new bobbin savers come, the first one will be for my Singer 221 bobbins. I love the bobbin savers and the three I have are filled so I'll be using the new ones, especially for extra sewing bobbins.
