Need to know how to put together a quilt that is made of blocks I have embroidered and then in between them added a 2" strip. I cannot get them so that they all line up and look straight as I go down thru the quilt. How do I do that? Can anyone give me some help on how to line them up down thru. I have a partial picture of where I started.

just_the_scraps_m'am 09-13-2011 07:25 AM

basically work from the wrong side, using a straight edge, mark on the sashing where the block above meets it, then do the same with blocks below sashing.

if you need pictures--send me PM with an email address i can send you a pdf file that explains it.

janedee 09-13-2011 07:37 AM

thats something else new I have learned!!!

First, make sure that each block measures the same size. Then cut the sashing the same width and add it between the blocks. You now have columns of blocks. Add the sashing in a long strip up and down. Using the method just_the_scraps_m'am wrote, line up your columns together and sew them up. Everything should line up just right. Good luck and post a pic when you are done. We would love to see the finished product.

As gzuslivz said, first check the size. If they are all equal you should be able to get them to line up, pin, pin, pin. If they are not exactly the same size, consider changing your design. I would off set the blocks instead of lining them up, kind of like a brick pattern.

Tinabodina 09-13-2011 07:55 AM

Measure 10 times and cut once!

nativetexan 09-13-2011 07:56 AM

and if they are still off a bit when you go to quilt the quilt, do curved lines, not straight.

if they're not all the same IDENTICAL size, you COULD either cut a smidgeon off to make smaller OR center it so that it doesn't LOOK too much off the mark...
if the block is too SMALL, you could either add a tiny strip on one or both sides to make it larger OR add a small section of sashing....there's more than one way to skin a ....quilt....

Justlucy 09-13-2011 10:30 AM

I sure try to get them all the same size....they are all 6" blocks. I always remeasure but seems I am never right on the money when it comes to sewing. I try to always use the same width stitching seam, I don't know just a wee problem for me. Thanks for the suggestions.

Here is the finished top piece of my quilt that you helped me with. I worked on this all day and believe with your help it looks pretty good. Christmas quilts are a learning experience. This is the Nite Before Christmas, 30 blocks.

gzuslivz 09-13-2011 04:42 PM

BEAUTIFUL! We knew you could do it.

PWinston 09-13-2011 05:06 PM

Looks like you mastered it. Wow, all that embroidery looks like a lot of work and I can certainly understand you wanting it to turn out perfect. Great quilt

Dina 09-13-2011 06:42 PM

Thanks all for the wonderful praise, sometimes we need it. I hope my granddaughter will love it also.

Gramof6 09-13-2011 09:22 PM

I love this! See? You did great!!! I have been making quilts since '97 and sometimes I will still have an issue. Yours looks wonderful!

Yeah, did you square the blocks before you sewed them to the sashing, they might be different sizes slightly

pippi65 09-14-2011 04:18 AM

I would like a copy of that pdf file too please. I have some blocks from a swap that aren't "quite" the same size.

NICE JOB I MEAN VERY NICE JOB SEE YOU CAN DO IT.IT JUST TAKES TIME AND PATIENCE.

Wanabee Quiltin 09-14-2011 04:26 AM

I think this is a measurement problem: the blocks have to be the same size and the sashing the same size.

SunlitenSmiles 09-14-2011 05:10 AM

wonderful.....it turned out wonderful... your grandaughter will love it and so will her children and her childrens' children............a legacy

mucky 09-14-2011 05:15 AM

Could you share with all of us the PDF and pictures. I have never heard of that either.

Sunnye 09-14-2011 05:55 AM

Looks good!
I'm working on one now with the same problem!

lmw54 09-14-2011 05:57 AM

Great job!!

zennia 09-14-2011 06:03 AM

Very nice.

LindaM49 09-14-2011 06:09 AM

OMG...I LOVE your quilt.

I too am working on something that I designed and it looked great on paper but for some reason it's not looking quite right when I lay out the fabrics...lol. Quilting is like a puzzle...every piece has to fit just right.

Anyway...I am sure your grandfather will love the quilt. My hubby would love one like it. He has read The Night Before Christmas just about every year...first to our kids and now our grandchildren...that's about 40 years.

SCnewquilter 09-14-2011 06:33 AM

I have the same problem and would very much like to have a copy of the PDF also.

grumpy90650 09-14-2011 07:35 AM

nice job!! glad you asked the question coz i also have this problem with fussy cut squares...great info from the board members AGAIN!!!!

Grace MooreLinker 09-14-2011 07:43 AM

this is a gift that any one would love to have, beautifully done, a lot of work and labor of love.

Buckeye Rose 09-14-2011 07:51 AM

If the embroidered blocks are all the same size, then I would use the sashing on just the sides and add a different color block on the corners....it will help keep your blocks in line....kinda like this one

quilt gramma 09-14-2011 09:16 AM

That is a beautifull quilts looks great.

smitty 09-14-2011 11:20 AM

this is one time when cornerstones really help. with the squares, you just line up each seam, no extra marking.
especially a time saver on a large quilt with lots of blocks.

Grandma Libby 09-14-2011 11:53 AM

Ooooohhhh, that is sooooo cute. Good job!

carolynjo 09-14-2011 12:45 PM

You did a fabulous job of lining those blocks up! How proud you will be to display it this season. Aren't quilt board folks wonderful?!

Passionate Quilter 09-14-2011 01:02 PM

Your quilt is beautiful, something to be proud of, I know your granddaughter will love and cherish it. Thank you for sharing it with us.

ghquilter53 09-14-2011 03:38 PM

For each block sew a sashing strip on the top side, then another sashing strip down the left side making sure your sashing strips are all the same size and easing where needed. then just sew your blocks together one row at a time. Then you just need to add an outside sashing to the right side and bottom of quilt center. It will come perfect
every time and so less frustrating than all that other measuring.

quilter2theend 09-14-2011 03:39 PM

Did you completely embroider each block? Were any of them preprinted and you added embroidery? If you embroidered all those blocks, I praise your wonderful work. The quilt is absolutely adorable and you have a wonderful Christmas quilt.

You need to trim all the blocks to the same exact size.
Make sure to get the space around the lines of print even.

If you have one, use a large square ruler. Put tape on it to mark the size you want.
Mark the edges with pencil lines before you cut.
If the blocks are all different sizes, - even a sliver of fabric wider, they will not line up.

ktmo815 09-14-2011 04:48 PM

WOW!! I love it!

Greenheron 09-14-2011 05:21 PM

Yay, you did it!
