Need to know how to put together a quilt that is made of blocks I have embroidered and then in between them added a 2" strip. I cannot get them so that they all line up and look straight as I go down thru the quilt. How do I do that? Can anyone give me some help on how to line them up down thru. I have a partial picture of where I started.

basically work from the wrong side, using a straight edge, mark on the sashing where the block above meets it, then do the same with blocks below sashing.
if you need pictures--send me PM with an email address i can send you a pdf file that explains it. |
thats something else new I have learned!!!

First, make sure that each block measures the same size. Then cut the sashing the same width and add it between the blocks. You now have columns of blocks. Add the sashing in a long strip up and down. Using the method just_the_scraps_m'am wrote, line up your columns together and sew them up. Everything should line up just right. Good luck and post a pic when you are done. We would love to see the finished product.

As gzuslivz said, first check the size. If they are all equal you should be able to get them to line up, pin, pin, pin. If they are not exactly the same size, consider changing your design. I would off set the blocks instead of lining them up, kind of like a brick pattern.

Measure 10 times and cut once!
|
and if they are still off a bit when you go to quilt the quilt, do curved lines, not straight.

if the block is too SMALL, you could either add a tiny strip on one or both sides to make it larger OR add a small section of sashing....there's more than one way to skin a ....quilt.... |
I sure try to get them all the same size....they are all 6" blocks. I always remeasure but seems I am never right on the money when it comes to sewing. I try to always use the same width stitching seam, I don't know just a wee problem for me. Thanks for the suggestions.

Here is the finished top piece of my quilt that you helped me with. I worked on this all day and believe with your help it looks pretty good. Christmas quilts are a learning experience. This is the Nite Before Christmas, 30 blocks.

BEAUTIFUL! We knew you could do it.
|
Looks like you mastered it. Wow, all that embroidery looks like a lot of work and I can certainly understand you wanting it to turn out perfect. Great quilt
|
Great job!!
|
Wonderful quilt!!! You did a great job.

I would like a copy of that pdf file too please. I have some blocks from a swap that aren't "quite" the same size.

I think this is a measurement problem: the blocks have to be the same size and the sashing the same size.
|
wonderful.....it turned out wonderful... your grandaughter will love it and so will her children and her childrens' children............a legacy
|
Could you share with all of us the PDF and pictures. I have never heard of that either.
|
Looks good!
I'm working on one now with the same problem! |
Great job!!
|
Very nice.
|
OMG...I LOVE your quilt.
I too am working on something that I designed and it looked great on paper but for some reason it's not looking quite right when I lay out the fabrics...lol. Quilting is like a puzzle...every piece has to fit just right. Anyway...I am sure your grandfather will love the quilt. My hubby would love one like it. He has read The Night Before Christmas just about every year...first to our kids and now our grandchildren...that's about 40 years. |
I have the same problem and would very much like to have a copy of the PDF also.
|
nice job!! glad you asked the question coz i also have this problem with fussy cut squares...great info from the board members AGAIN!!!!
|
this is a gift that any one would love to have, beautifully done, a lot of work and labor of love.
|
If the embroidered blocks are all the same size, then I would use the sashing on just the sides and add a different color block on the corners....it will help keep your blocks in line....kinda like this one

That is a beautifull quilts looks great.
|
this is one time when cornerstones really help. with the squares, you just line up each seam, no extra marking.
especially a time saver on a large quilt with lots of blocks. |
Ooooohhhh, that is sooooo cute. Good job!
|
You did a fabulous job of lining those blocks up! How proud you will be to display it this season. Aren't quilt board folks wonderful?!
|
Your quilt is beautiful, something to be proud of, I know your granddaughter will love and cherish it. Thank you for sharing it with us.
|
For each block sew a sashing strip on the top side, then another sashing strip down the left side making sure your sashing strips are all the same size and easing where needed. then just sew your blocks together one row at a time. Then you just need to add an outside sashing to the right side and bottom of quilt center. It will come perfect
every time and so less frustrating than all that other measuring. |
Did you completely embroider each block? Were any of them preprinted and you added embroidery? If you embroidered all those blocks, I praise your wonderful work. The quilt is absolutely adorable and you have a wonderful Christmas quilt.

Make sure to get the space around the lines of print even. If you have one, use a large square ruler. Put tape on it to mark the size you want. Mark the edges with pencil lines before you cut. If the blocks are all different sizes, - even a sliver of fabric wider, they will not line up. |
WOW!! I love it!
|
Yay, you did it!
