I went to a popular quilt store today. Got some goodies, but also some thread to go with...wondered why my bill was so high, looked at receipt. One spool of thread was over 11.00  I told the cashier I didn't want it...too much.
You've probably been asked a hundred times, but please make it 101 and point me to good quality 100% cotton threads, that don't cost an arm and a leg...I will buy in bulk if I have to...within reason. thanks. :)

camillacamilla 02-24-2009 09:14 PM

I like Gutermann or Sulky. You can get those at Hancock Fabrics or JoAnn's.

Moonpi 02-24-2009 09:38 PM

Threadart.com usually has some bargains. A lot depends on your machine's fussiness level for different thread. My old one would sew with anything. The one I run now has a decided preference for Gutterman.

I wouldn't invest a lot of money in any brand until I knew it would work for mine. I use those coupons for thread if it is not on sale.

littlehud 02-24-2009 09:57 PM

I love Connecting Threads. Their thread is reasonable and nice quality.

henryparrish76 02-24-2009 10:46 PM

I 2nd Connecting Threads :):)

purplemem 02-25-2009 04:23 AM

I like Connecting Threads for piecing and Gutermann for quilting. I use the Hancocks coupons when I buy the Gutermann, and get 40% off. Connecting Threads is very inexpensive, great quality, but makes too much fuzz to quilt with for me.

Knot Sew 02-25-2009 04:45 AM

I use connecting threads, they have great cotton, I have not tried their other threads :D

key4unc 02-25-2009 04:49 AM

One spool of thread was over 11.00
Goodness :!: How large was the spool. Could you even pick it up?

pocoellie 02-25-2009 04:57 AM

Connecting Threads Essentials are 100% cotton and very, very reasonable. Their service is excellent.

BellaBoo 02-25-2009 04:58 AM

I use Essentials thread from Connecting Threads. I bought the neutral set and then ordered the big cones of the neutrals I use the most. It's great thread and my machine likes it.

Mousie 02-25-2009 06:31 AM

oh, I am indebted to all of you, thank you for all the info. :)
I have a brand new janome660P so not too worried that it will be fussy. I took my own scraps of all kinds and weights to the store when I tried it out, didn't change thread or needle and it sewed like a charm on all of them.
The spool in question was 1200 yards of variegated and although that might be a usual price, I had not paid that much and it was purple. Now I do love a good purple, (I must, lol, I was needing it), but thought I could do better than that. It would certainly take me a long time to use up all that. I like lots and lots of variety.
Gonna go check out some of these sites. thanks again, I knew I could count on my friends here! :D

Mousie 02-25-2009 06:34 AM

oops, that's a Janome6600P, would love to know if anyone else has one, so if I ever have questions or could learn cute tricks. (sound like a circus animal...LOL... )

sewmuch 02-25-2009 07:08 AM

You mentioned using a large spool on your machine. I bought a large spool of blue, just the color I needed. Don's have a spool holder, does anyone know where I can get one? Have a small Janome. Thanks, Nancy

BellaBoo 02-25-2009 07:52 AM

In a pinch I have used a canning jar for a thread holder, it worked great.

sewmuch 02-25-2009 08:08 AM

Good idea, Bella will try that.

Mousie 02-25-2009 08:10 AM

just got back from Connecting Threads, I don't have much time right now. will check others too, but wrote an order as this site will save me mucho bucks over what I have seen in stores, and more variety too. :D

about large spools, I only use large ones on my serger, but I have heard that using a jar works great. :D

I just sent you a pm. I have a Janome 6600 too & it's great!

sewmuch 02-25-2009 08:24 AM

Well the jar worked great, just wound a bobbin with it. Thanks so much.
You gals are all so smart and clever.

btty 02-25-2009 09:32 AM

Hi Nancy,
Try Clotilde's, she had one with and iron base. You need it to be heavy to hold the spool so the thread feeds correctly. Now you know I'm of those crazy folks that do things myself. I built one, I used a heavy chunk of wood (I live in the woods, what else would I use?) Then I cut a coat hanger, bent the end to be the thread carrier and drilled a hole to GLUE (with super glue) the coat hanger into. It has never moved unless I moved it, but if you don't have heavy wood pieces you could drill out holes and add led weights from the craft store if you want to make your own.

Hugs,
Sharon

PS: think I've used about all the threads from Connecting threads and I CAN recommend every one of them. They don't fray, they aren't to dusty, and they hold!!

BellaBoo 02-25-2009 04:05 PM

DH can weld so he made me one that is so heavy I use it as a doorstop. The base is about 3 inches of solid metal. His version of heavy is a lot different then my version.

quiltnut4ever 02-25-2009 04:07 PM

I swear by connecting threads! It seems to last longer than any other thread I've tried and its not as expensive.

sandpat 02-25-2009 04:26 PM

I love Connecting Threads! I use their thread for all my piecing and do use it if I am machine quilting using my older Singer. My Bernina is a little persnickety about the lint when I try to machine quilt with it though...I do love the thread though...very reasonalby priced for really good thread!

johnette 02-25-2009 07:58 PM

I bought a cotton thread set from ThreadArt.com. I have used it in both my singer and my viking, no problems. At first I thought the Viking didn't like it but then I found out I needed to change the pressure foot tension when I put the walking foot on it. It worked fine after that.

Dear Quilt Crazy: I too have a Janome 6600P and am TOTALLY in love with it. It DOES NOT like Coats and Clark; neither does my Janome 350E Emb. machine.

I never pay full price for any of my thread. Please go to Google and type in sale sites for Gutterman. Next, Google Sulky, etc. This is how I get most of my thread; VERY inexpensive compared to quilt shoppes. I use rayon, some polyester and 100% cotton and varigated thread. Once you use varigated thread, you will be totally in love. I use it on my embroidery machine and you would not believe how beautiful fish, birds, etc. are. Their gills and wings just explode off of the fabric! I have a total of five Janome machines and love each and every one of them. Enjoy your machine/s. GiGi :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Skeat 02-27-2009 02:58 AM

Our LQS has over $8 on the thread like you picked up for 11. I too think that is one little greedy someone somewhere. I too did the same thing and couldn't figure out what was costly and thought it was a mistake till I ran down the reciept....oops! That thread does look great on machine quilting:)
I too have the Janome 6600 and love mine too. I am presently making appliques on it using the blind hem stitch. You will love this machine and I still haven't had time to 'know' all there is about this machine. For I can't stop quilting enough:)I machine quilt on this too w/an open toe foot. Their book is very helpful in all the settings, etc.

guess what Gigi? the thread I mentioned?...coats and clarks. Boy, am I glad i said no. Actually I was just floored that one spool would cost that much! I am usually suspicious when there are not prices posted for products, but was in an awful hurry, anyway, just ordered 2 or 3 (?) sets of the variegated from Connecting Threads...can't wait. Wow, five Janomes, I have two now. The 6260Qc and 6600P. I thought I was a lucky girl. I just don't want to go thru the wdl when it's time for one to go in for oiling etc. and going to teach grands. I wasn't able with my own kid. I was a very busy mama at the time and they didn't seem interested. In hindsight, if I had....oh well, starting early with grand #2 and she is loving it! thanks

I have done some machine appliqueing in past, but plan to do a whole lot more, thus the variegated thread that was going to cost an appendage.
I have used blind hem stitch for hems, and your the second person I read have used it for appliques...other was last night somewhere. I am trying to picture that, but a little difficult. Is it hard to explain?
When I went in to dealer's store to try out machine, which belonged to his wife...I took my own samples and played around. Didn't change needle, thread or anything but settings. It sewed like butter on everything!...cottons, denim, satin, sandwhiches....wanted to see 'quilting effect'...I did some combination not knowing, and got a great scalloped stitching...I was sold! I also make clothes and loved that it has the....thingy that balances machine to weight of your fabric and the accufeed. Accufeed is what made me go with 6600 instead of 6500. I figured, it might be last machine I ever get, so go with the features you really want.
anyway, too early to be getting so longwinded, lol, but if you can tell me how you blindstitched on edge of appliques...if not, that is ok. I will get it, eventually I hope.
When brother comes home from vacation, he is a 'puter whiz and can help me with yahoo. Not cooperating with me. thanks for all the info, you probably got more in return than you bargained for. I dreamt about my dad's side of the family last night, cause they are all great talkers! For some reason, told somebody in dream, that my g'pa was filthy rich...he has passed and didn't have a penny to leave anyone! go figure!!! LOL.

I have used Connecting threads and it is quit linty. I started using aurifil after taking a class from Nancy Chong and love it. Use nothing else now. www.pacificrim.com I use their applique thread also. good stuff

crazyquilter 02-27-2009 06:29 AM

Try www.atlantathread.com
They have Egyptian cotton, 40/3, tex 45, yes, tex 45. Very strong, comes in 12 colors, 6000 yd cones for ~$12 each. I use it for most of my machine quilting. They also have Signature, size 50, 3000 yd cones in assorted colors for ~8.00. For regular sewing, I order Guterman from them also. $2.95 for 1100 yd tubes, over 600 colors available or on 5500 yd cones for ~13.00. They are very prompt with their shipping and usually send out the day you order if you get it in before noon. They are the only place I buy thread now...

crazyquilter 02-27-2009 06:37 AM

Also forgot to mention that Atlanta thread has Coats and Clark 6000 yd cones for 13.55 each. (All colors.)

My machine broke down and it was full of lint from the Essential thread from connecting threads. Cost $80.00 to fix. I have the Janome 6600 P too

BellaBoo 02-27-2009 06:58 AM

I'm sorry about your machine.
I have been using Essentials thread on my new machine from day one. It's a Brother PS that sews 1500 stitches a second which will shred low quality thread in a heartbeat. It was cleaned a few weeks ago and not much lint at all in it. My machine has the outside threading system.

The new inside threading on some machines the lint has no where to go so it stays inside the machine. The more guides the thread goes through on the outside the less lint build up. The inside threading machines need thread as lintless as possible thus more expensive. I don't know why that isn't stressed by the dealer before someone buys one. The best and only lent fee strong thread I know of is silk thread.

mountain deb 02-27-2009 07:53 AM

Try this site for threads. [email protected]. Don't drool to much, it is hazardous to your computer :D javascript:emoticon(':D');
javascript:emoticon(':D'); I stopped in there when I was in the area. It is a wonderful store and just as wonderfully staffed. I stocked up on thread, to feed my thread stash. A lot of quilters were there that day, so that says something about the thread.

Just 22 lights away was another little jem, www.maryjos.com. I think I left some drool on a few things. javascript:emoticon(':oops:');

I have a Janome 6600 and love it! If you are looking to read or share information, there is a Yahoo group called Janome 6500 & 6600.

Otherwise you can converse with me...and we can work out things together. I'm not an expert by any means, but I own Janome, New Home and Elna machines..all made by the same company...and I love them all.
My favortie is the 6600 since it has the accufeed, start/stop and thread cutter.

This Christmas my mother bought me a Singer Futura 350 Embroidery machine. Huge leaning curve on this one....for the embroidering.
Happy sewing and quilting.
Diana

wraez 02-27-2009 08:19 AM

I'm a lover of Essential threads by Connecting threads too! 100% Egyptian long staple cotton, low lint and the price can't be beat. I love the sheen to the thread and the colors too.

I've used this thread successfully for piecing and quilting now for over 4 or 5 yrs.

My preference for the bobbin is Superior Bottom Line...a bit pricey looking but it lasts so long that it actually is a good price and great quality.

There are lots of great threads out there but having a fixed income makes me very frugal.

warm quilt hugs, sue

machinequilter 02-27-2009 08:31 AM

Connecting Threads has a spool holder that I use with my Janome.

Hi Diana

I'm a member of the Janome yahoo group but mostly a lurker. The first posting I did there a gal was really rude when I said I loved Connecting Threads, after that I just read to learn from other postings. I felt if she didn't agree she didn't need to respond, especially so vehemently. Mostly everyone is really supportive and knowledgeable and eager to share.

warm quilt hugs, sue

mkanderson 02-27-2009 09:58 AM

I agree with Sue!! Some can be rude when you state something did good for you. All machines, and people for that matter....sew and quilt differently and what works for one may not work for another. (too you can get a BAD spool from the maker!! And once can ruin your experience for that product even if it is a good one!!) I like to see what works for each and then see what I can learn and pick up from them! And see what works for me :D

I hand piece and hand quilt (although I am not what you would call good!!! I make just for my family and when they wear out I make another one!!!) I tie some quilts and send most out to ge quilted (not sure what she uses but they wear good!!) On mine that I piece and do quilt by hand I use the Hand Quilting Dual Duty Plus by Coats for both. A few small things that I have quilted on the machine (not many as I am just learning to use the machine to quilt!) I have used it too and the settings on my machine it works good with it. Have heard some say that it doesn't work good on the machines but mine seems to...at least what I have done so far!!

SandyGail 02-27-2009 10:03 AM

I use Longcreek Mills for my embroidery thread & they have some cotton I have tried. Due to shipping, several of my friends & I order together & split the cost. They carry prewound bobbins & stablizer if you are into embroidery.
