If it is fused down, it probably won't fray. I haven't had that problem. Of course, if you wash it often, it might fray.

we just had a lesson on applique at the quilt shop in town and use 19 i think they called it the blanket stitch.

Some time ago I remember seeing a post regarding someone using the blanket stitch (#19) biting into the background rather than the item being appliqued, as #20 would do. It was a beautiful effect; it was yellow or orange and created a kind of glow around the object.

I also would use either of those two stitches. Does your sewing machine have mirror image. That means you can switch the stitch pattern the other way if it is not the way you want. Check it out.
