Seems to me that this would help to time stamp when she created this to prove the date. Sort of like mailing something to yourself. The date stamped on the post can't be altered. Not that I know exactly how the legal system would work, just seems logical to me.

Of course, now that you have posted the block for the entire world to see, your odds of success in defending a copyright for the block itself are somewhere between slim and none. If you write a pattern, don't publicize it before you register the copyright. Here's an overview of how to do that.

It's $35 to file online, $65 to file paper forms. Current e-filing processing time is roughly 2.7 months (paper filing is 6.1 months).

The idea that mailing something to yourself is copyright protection is false. It does not stand up in court. A posting time/date on a message board certainly won't either. The only way to legally defend against copyright infringement is to register the work with the copyright office before the infringement takes place. It does no good to register after someone steals your idea and/or registers it as their own.

The answer to your questions is in the post directly above yours. :)

It looks like an interesting block. A secondary design appears when the blocks are sewn together.
Can't wait to see the finished quilt. :)

Definately write up the pattern, date it , name it and copywrite it. Publish for sure - I think it will sell.

Since I realize there are few new ideas left out there, I just thought I'd ask if any of you know this block under another name by someone else. This is meant to be a scrappy quilt. Great job! Enjoy the ride!
