new here

I have been looking at all your work for over 5 years. I am amazed at some of it. There is so much talent I am having feelings of inferiority.

I have been working on a Hunter's Star since October and am seeing the end. My problem is how do I quilt it. I have a longarm but I am not very good at it. Suggestions for quilt design would be greatly appreciated.

no quilting suggestions, but welcome to the QB

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. Pick a quilting design that you think you can do well. I would suggest a large meander but I find that is actually pretty hard to get smooth curves for a beginner. Try a design that lets you rest in spots like a loop de loop or loops and stars. Does you machine have a pantograph you can use?

Welcome from Florida. It's a wonderful group of people, everyone is so helpful. I usually go with a large meander also.

Welcome, from Texas! Sorry I can't help with the LA quilting question; I quilt on my DSM and usually just do outline stitching.

Welcome from S CA!

Stitch happy has "block specific" quilting patterns. I haven't bought any yet, but I do browse often!

I know what you mean about feeling intimidated, since that's the way I always feel at quilt shows. Try to get to the other side, though, and that's to feel inspired. I also have a longarm, and there are so many techniques and skills to learn that I try to concentrate on practicing some new skill on each quilt. I really enjoyed Kimmy Brunner's Machine Quilting with Templates class on Craftsy, and that's a technique that would lend itself nicely to a Hunter's Star.

GrandMommy 01-04-2014 08:37 AM

I am able to do a good meander but thought I might like something different. Would like to see some of yours that are done.

aronel 01-04-2014 09:13 AM

No suggestions either, but I wanted to welcome you to the board!

Dolphyngyrl 01-04-2014 09:27 AM

I would google hunter star quilt images and see how others have done it or search it on pinterest to see some ideas

Welcome from Muscatine, Iowa. What about maybe just doing stippling.

Welcome from Michigan.....Personally, I think the quilting can 'make' the quilt so I understand you waiting to decide what you want to do. It often takes me awhile to pick what I think will be perfect. I do think searching for images of your pattern might help. Whatever you choose will be wonderful..... and will help you move on to the next masterpiece.

Welcome from Illinois! I don't have a long arm but wouldn't know what to do with it if I did! I am not the most mechanical person on this board but I have learned so much here!

Nammie to 7 01-04-2014 02:50 PM

Well, you are two steps ahead of me --you have a long arm and you have a quilt that is ready to be quilted!! Good luck finding a design for your quilt.

Welcome from Western MA. You are going to love this board!!

Welcome from New Hampshire where it was a frigid -15*F last night!

I know what you mean about feeling inferior. I always feel that way when I go to quilt shows. They are both intimidating and inspiring at the same time. I never think I can "do" what others have done. You are two steps ahead of me. (1) you are almost ready to quilt a top and (2) you own a longarm machine. I have multiple tops that need sandwiching and quilting (I think I am the queen of tops) and unfortunately I don't have the room nor the funds for a longarm machine.

I don't have any specific ideas for quilting designs but the wonderful members here on QB can probably help you with this. Whatever design you do choose, remember there is no such thing as the Quilt Police! (Although I do have many patrolmen running around in my head when I quilt...and they're not all young and good looking either! LOL)

Welcome from Arizona.

Welcome from Florida. I am no help whatsoever. Layering and quilting are my least favorite part of making a quilt. So….I put it off until I have too. Now I know why so many quilters only seem to make lap quilts, baby quilts and table runners.

pinkflowers 01-04-2014 03:24 PM

Nice to have you join in GrandMommy! This is only my second post. I have also been on the sidelines looking in on the QB for quite a while now. I have found it to be a great resource and source of inspiration! I plan to be more interactive this year. Yes, I just revealed a 2014 resolution...

Hunter's Star is an awesome quilt. Did you use any special ruler or pattern?

My suggestion for quilting would be to chose something with smooth, easy movements....maybe curls/swirls.

joyce888 01-04-2014 04:32 PM

Welcome! I just bought my long arm and have only quilted three quilts but I've been studying the quilts posted here and seeing what will work for my own. Do a search (box on the right in header) for Hunters Star and see what others have done.

coopah 01-04-2014 04:48 PM

Welcome to QB! No ideas on how to quilt it. If you went to the pictures section of this Board and then typed in Hunter's Star, that might give you some ideas...if there are Hunter's Stars in the pictures. Good luck! Glad you've come aboard!

linbails 01-05-2014 03:32 AM

Welcome from Wisconsin, where it was -31 when the sun came up this morning. And a bit breezy. All schools closed.
We used to walk to school in this kind of weather, 5 miles, up hill both ways. LOL (Actually, I lived only 2 miles from school.)

Anyway, a good "stay home and sew" day!

plrb1959 01-06-2014 06:40 AM

Where in NC do you live nanacarolyn. I live in Rockingham and was just wondering if you were close to me.

Welcome from California. Since you've been "peeking in" for quite some time, I know you realize that this Board is a wealth of information. The other people have helped me innumerable times. No question too big, too small or too stupid. I can tell you I certainly appreciate the support.

Emma S 01-06-2014 08:14 AM

Glad your here, welcome from Oregon. I just started quilting with my regular machine last year. Found out that just getting past that first couple of quilts helped unblock the process. Leah Day is a free form quilter, although she uses a regular sewing machine, she still opens a huge world of creative quilting. Please show us what you decide.

oldtnquiltinglady 01-06-2014 08:29 AM

Call on your son (if you have one, or a daughter); that is what I have done. My LA (Gammill Classic, about 5 years old) has me thoroughly intimidated, and gets worse every time I feel like I might set to and do a quilt by myself.

Welcome to this board; you're going to love us, warts and all.....
