I just had to share what I got today. I went to an estate auction that advertised sewing machines. I got this treadle for $35. It needs major cleaning. It was in the garage sitting on a greasy floor. The machine has scratches from where there was a pin cushion around the arm. There were 4 bobbins and a few other accessories. I'm not sure where to find the model on this machine. The other machine says 319W on the front and I got it for $5. I also bought a cabinet for it for $10. I have no idea how to start cleaning them so all information is Very welcome. It will take a bit to get all the pictures uploaded.

You've done well today!
Your treadle cabinet is going to be one beautiful piece of furniture when you get it back to life! |
Love that Treadle lovely cabinet.....I have NO idea how to tell you how to clean any of them...just needed to comment on the Treadle.
I would start buy cleaning it with Murphy's oil soap, then rubbing with with denatured alcohol using a steel wool pad.
That should dissolve the old varnish. After that, if you could apply Howard's orange feed 'n' wax. Then you just have to let that sit for 20 minutes, and finally buff with a clean flannel cloth. Should be all it needs. |

Under tutorials do a search for vintage sewing machines. Billy "lostin51" did four tutorials on cleaning and refurbishing vintage machines, and has a whole list of products that won't harm the machines.
You got very good deals. Fun and challenging. |
great finds

Congratulations!

I have a 1917 Franklin that i've had for 30 plus years, mine is electric and sews like a dream

Really cool treadle cabinet! Pretty machine. I've got to stop looking at all your machines that get posted here - I've already broken down and bought a featherweight. While I dropped it of it get it all cleaned and tuned up I saw a really pretty treadle machine for sale. I have no place for a treadle machine! (Maybe one of those pretty hand crank ones...) I just can't stop myself from looking at all your pretty new (old) finds - and all the great deals!
Wow. Congratulations. That cabinet is gorgeous.
One of the many envious vintage buffs here. Fantastic find.

I am going to my first sewing machine auction Tuesday evening and I hope I can do as well as you did. What wonderful luck you had. Great job. |
Just lovely. The parlor cabinet is so pretty. And $35 is a great price.
wow! How fabulous.
If the machines never work, the cabinets are worth every penny, and will look amazingly wonderful once cleaned up well. But, with time and patience and if nothing else take to a repair person whom is trustworthy, and have them professionally cleaned up, tuned and you may sew forever without ever doing another thing to them, short of oiling and giving them a rest now and then!LOL
CONGRATS! What a find! The internet should have tons of info on how to clean up the cabinet and the machines. Good luck, the treadle will be absolutely beautiful!
Oh love the cabinet on the first one! I can just imagine all cleaned up! Gorgeous!!!!!!
wow lucky you, that first cabinet is incredible. DEB

Oh My goodness!!! Did you make a couple of steals!!! Billy has tutorials on cleaning and getting them going. The 319W is made in Germany and is a wonderful machine. The parlor will look just dandy when you get through. Congratulations on your excellent buys!!! |
Wowzer! You did Good! I have a black 319w and absolutely love it......such a good machine! Have a great time cleaning them up.
Omg, your 319w is just like my mothers. same color too! i learned to sew on this when i was 4 years old. she even had a cabinet like that one. the machine is a great work horse. mother finally traded hers in on a viking in the mid 70s. i'm sure she appreciated the newer machine but i missed all the cams & attachments i could play with on the 319. enjoy your new to you toys!
Awesome!
Great Buys!! Lovely machines! Search vintage machines. There is a whole thread about them, with tutorials for cleaning. Billy, lostn51, gives terrific advice. His instructions are what I used to clean and refurbish my old new-to-me machine, and now it works like a dream and looks great too.
In the same section, Glenn gives tutorials for refinishing cabinets. |
The cabinet is beautiful. And what wonderful prices!! Sorry cannot help you with cleaning the machines, but I would go to Lowes/Home Depot and talk to paint dept people about what to use to clean the wood cabinets if you have not done refinishing before. The machines I would take to a professional. Take care.

I agree with everyone...your new cabinet is beautiful! When I cleaned my "new" old machine, I ran a search for "how to clean old sewing machines", I found a lot of information, and was able to clean mine up really well. Hope this helps a little! Congratulations on your great finds!

What a great fine. My mom had the Singer Sewing and cabinet that you pictured, but we had a house fire when I was younger and it was lost along with everything else.
I just love the first machine and the cabinet, it is so beautiful. Do you planned to use the two sewing machines or are they just collector items? Take Care, Mary (stitchengramie) |
What a gorgeous find. Enjoy the treadle. If I had room, I'd also get one. I learned on a treadle and think it would be fun to sew a quilt on one. I'd keep it in the living room on display!
Ditto, me too.
What a great find. Congrats.
You might want to for the Singer vintage machines site on Yahoo groups. They have very good info and just like this site they are willing to help.
Awesome finds!
I.ve never seen a treadle in an enclosed cabinet. It's beautiful. You can sew when the power is out!
That cabinet will be gorgeous! Great bargains for you. I hope you will post pictures when they're restored!
Wow...that treadle & cabinet are really pretty. The green Singer reminds me of my green 15-125, but there are a few things that are different with the front of your machine, and so, I don't know if your's is a 15-125 or not. But, you really hit the jackpot.
