Hi! I've been lurking for a few weeks and decided I should ask for a little help. I'm currently working on my first quilt. I took a hand piecing (and a hand piecing) class about a month ago and have been working on piecing the squares. I learned the "Ohio Star" square in my class and found a layout online that I liked to go with the Ohio Star http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2...ng-week-1.html
Instead of the different types of stars, I figured I would use the Ohio Star for all of the star blocks and an off-white/green setting square. I have completed 6 of each type of block...and laid them out earlier. I am thinking the colors don't really work (the off-white with the darkness of the other block). I haven't done any of the sashing strips...so maybe that will help tie it all together. What do you think? Should I rethink the setting squares? Thanks in advance!!! I intended on rotating this so that the left three were on top...but it wouldn't allow me to. |
I like it!

I like the contrast. Very nicely done:)
I think it looks great...very nice colours and beautifully put together.
Good choices! This will be a beautiful quilt.
I'm thinking that sashing the Ohio Stars in the lighter fabric and the Puss in the Corner blocks (I think that's the name?) with the darker tan may work.
I think you've done a wonderful job!!!!!!! Sorry if my advice is wrong, I'm fading here lol |
Thanks for all of the quick responses and for the encouragement! I'll keep going!
Looks good to me. I love the sashing idea.
The blocks look great! Nice work! Keep going!
I wouldn't add sashing. It'll ruin the diagonal pattern the chain blocks make. The lower left corner of the middle block on the right is turned wrong.
I think it's great as is.
I agree with Scissor Queen and cjomomma, it looks wonderful like it is without sashing. I like the chain effect that is produced and since the green color is in both blocks, it ties together great!
Looks great!

You've got a boo-boo in the middle pieced square - right column . One of those 4 patch blocks needs to be rotated once and then the block will be correct.
That could be why it looks a bit off to you as the eye can't follow the chain pattern. ;) ;) I'm thinking I kinda like it. You've got all kinds of interesting secondary patterns going on, from the chain blocks and from the checkerboard light/dark. I don't think sashing would add anything positive. Can you lay out all 12 blocks for us to see? The symmetry would also show up better that way. |
I love it - but I am partial to the color green - but that is going to be a beautiful quilt.

Yikes! Thanks to those of you for pointing that mistake out...not looking forward to fixing it (or looking through the others to see if there are more). I will try to post a picture of the 12 I have finished tomorrow evening. I still have 13 more before the top is complete. I don't think the x pattern will be lost with sashing if I put the green (or even tan) at each intersection like the example in the link.
If you want to keep the chain going, as suggested above, the center block on the right need correcting (rotating the 4 patch) to achieve that. I like your colors. I would pull a darker color, maybe a brown that is darker than the star background, or a darker green that goes with your greens. If you sash each block, maybe brown (the color of the star background) around the block with the 4 patch squares, and a green around the start block, then you would need a 4 patch cornerstone. That would be very pretty as well as a single color for sashing.
In all that, I forgot to say, keep up the good work. Your quilt will be pretty whatever you decide. |

I really like it the way you have it.
I think you're doing a wonderful job. I rather like the layout just as you have it, without the sashing. The contrasting background squares looks just fine. Send more pictures when you have more done :-)

Your quilt looks good just as it is, but remember...it's your quilt & what works for you is best.
Looks good so far!
Looks great! Go for it.

I think it looks great! good job.

It works OK. You can do lots of other things to it which will cost more money of course. However these colours work OK.

I think once you get all the blocks done it will be just fine!
Very Pretty, love the colors.
A Great looking quilt.
Color scheme in my opinion are good. Keep on quilting |
 good job :D
I like this. The design layout is perfect.
I like the contrast. It looks great
IMHO ... stick with what you have laid out ... except turn on point. You'll get a similar effect to the linked pattern, and avoid the sashing and adding of setting triangles. |
This is awesome! Cream and tan go together beautifully! Sashing will tie all the blocks together.. great job!
This works for me. I see nothing wrong with the colors.
beautiful!
this is going to be a very beautiful quilt when you get it finished
I like it alot!!! Very pretty.
Great job on the colors! It all works well together.
I don't think you should worry at all....they are beautifully done. As for the sashing, try to pick a darker green or even gold in the shades you have used. Also try black; it might make it stunning!!
