We do get fabric into Goodwill but the ladies in that town get to them before I do.
|
Our Goodwill has small pieces - not a lot of large. I did pick up about 4 yds of a midnight blue. We were trying to decide if it was black - which is what I wanted - but when I got home and compared, it was a very dark blue. BUT, I got 4 yards for $3. My favorite thrift store is the Humane Society. They also have small pieces - in a qt. size plastic bag but they're only $1. And the bags are stuffed. Only problem is the bags are sealed so you can't feel the fabric unless you're like me and poke holes in the bags. What, you've never done anything like that??? I only poke at the top where no one can really see them. :-D :-D :-D

There's 5-1/2 yards so I can have the perfect backing. I think I paid $4.
This week I found a four yard piece of Kona Bay fabric (Hawaiian flowers) for $3. |

Usually I find something useful in the way of fabric at the beginning of that section. I make Crib Quilts and to keep the cost down, I go to Good will or Salvation Army for new fabric for them. 2 weeks ago, I purchased from SA 2 yards of fabric for $1.75 and this week I purchased 2 yards to $2.50 from GoodWill. Both good quality, just different retailers. SA less expensive on everything. Plus, according to records, their CEO get paid less than any others at any thrift store.

Seldom have fabric in our local GW's but I always check the curtains and pillow cases and the exlarge men's shirts.

The Goodwill I go to in Thurmont MD is hit and miss on fabric. I find the prices of everything is way up. I go senior discount day and only buy things on sale unless something is priced a reasonable price. They have fabric but is usually uphostery type.

Sorry ladies, wished you lived in Jacksonville, FL. We have several Goodwill stores here but our favorite is the Goodwill Pound Store. They sell everything by the pound..Things are in bins that are on rollers which they exchange several times a day. In other words refilled. Things come in from other stores, some with new tags still attached. Today I got several good like new pocket novels, 3 blouses, toys for my puppy and etc. They have everythings and anything, baby clothes, materials, linens, electronic items, bins of shoes, purses, house wares, you have to dig in the bins which are not too deep but its a fun day if you like things of that sort. Anyhow my bill today was $6.34..My visiting DIL got 5 medical scrub tops, sweater, several blouses and a few books. Her bill was $8.??. Quiltingjaguar in FL

Which Goodwills do you go to in MN? I am from SW MN, and have not found any fabric at the Goodwill stores in my area.

NO fabric-- I asked two different people. BUT I did come away with a 100% wool thigh-length winter jacket for $4.00 (it's supposed to snow here tomorrow night), 2 100% cotton, good-condition dress shirts for the DH for $10, and a pair of bar stools (with the woven seats) for $15. |

I've gotten countless yards this way. My last haul was over 20 yards of fabric and four giant books of patterns for $20. The one before that was three large bags and a box of scraps for $5. On Sunday I'm visiting a woman's studio (with my husband - be safe, please!) because posted on CL that she wants to de-stash -- at $1 to $2 a yard, for hundreds of yards! It's not everyday that such things come along but you really never know. Happy hunting! |

Try other thrift stores in your area and garage sales.

Even though I have dismantled men's shirts for quilting, you can buy brand new men's shirts at Wal-mart for less than the re-cycled ones at Goodwill. No bargains at either of them, here. |
Around here they hang the fabric up with the sheets, dust ruffles and such. I too did not know they carried fabric
till cousin show me it. I have to go in wc so DH takes me through the rows and shows me what they have. Nope, can't hide anything so try to keep my needs at a minimun. He never buys anything but groceries with out taking me to see and ask for my opinion. So turn around is fair play. |
the good thing about good will is that you can get any fabric there. They are called shirts, not trying to be smart here, just look for 100 cotton and men shirts are the best kind. You will get way over a yard of fabric on it and ugly fabric makes good scrappy quilts. Just ask Bonnie Hunter....I did LOL

Look for fabrics in their Linen racks. That is where they put the fabrics at my good will.
|
GOODWILL will only have(like all thrift stores) what the public in the area donates. ours sometimes does, alot -NOT! my friend checks often-recently she scored a brand new wheeled sewing machine tote for a $1.50--wished I'd check more often! FABRIC is often hung w/ the linens, so be sure to check that area!On vacation I check out thrifts-ya never know! In florida I got 3.5yds of batiks @ GW for .29, It was marked $2.50, was stapled w/rusty staple, ask the clerk to remove it so I could seehow noticeable the marks were. Said the tag wasn't theirs, it was damaged, if I wanted it--.29. SOLD!! LOL!!!

Your Goodwill has fabric. You just didn't recognize it! Wanting to make a Kaffe Facett designed quilt using shirting fabrics, that I saw in one of his books, I went to the nearest Goodwill store and found a huge assortment of men's striped 100% cotton dress shirts for $2.25 each. Some of them were brand new and still had store tags on them! No two are alike. I cut off the collars, cuffs, and plackets

go to shop goodwill.com yes they have a online site like e-bay .i've seen fabric on it several times but nothing that looked good dj

Same at my Goodwill and Salvation Army resale store.
