Inspired by all the wonderful "look what I got!!!" posts, I tracked down the closest Goodwill store to me-- it's the one in Rockville, MD on Boiling Brook Pkwy (don't we have great names here?)

NO fabric-- I asked two different people.

BUT I did come away with a 100% wool thigh-length winter jacket for $4.00 (it's supposed to snow here tomorrow night), 2 100% cotton, good-condition dress shirts for the DH for $10, and a pair of bar stools (with the woven seats) for $15.

Grama Lehr 03-31-2011 01:18 PM

SEE???   It was a wasted trip!

sally's girl 03-31-2011 01:22 PM

Our Goodwill never has fabric....sometimes broken down sewing machines so ladies here either do not quilt or keep all their fabric for themselves. Always see cross stitch kits and books.

CarrieAnne 03-31-2011 01:29 PM

Not in ours either!

Jim's Gem 03-31-2011 01:40 PM

I have never found any in mine either!

Deborah12687 03-31-2011 01:58 PM

I use to pick up a lot of fabric at the Goodwill and since the begining of the year they have not had any. I was there today and just picked up a few books. The store is a bit messy in the book area. I am ready to head out of town and check other Goodwills.

Sadiemae 03-31-2011 02:24 PM

We don't have Goodwill Stores and the other second hand stores are expensive and don't have fabric.

Ann L 03-31-2011 02:28 PM

At least your trip wasn't a complete bust! I don't find fabric at mine either so don't feel bad. I do pick up shirts and such that are 100% cotton on the lable and use it in quilts

Tink's Mom 03-31-2011 02:46 PM

I don't find any fabric at the goodwill stores here...in fact, I don't get very lucky with too much at Goodwill....Salvation Army is another story. Still no fabric, but I do find things...Got an area rug for my living room for $28. It was new.

ctack2 03-31-2011 02:59 PM

The fabric I find at Goodwill here, even on half price days is outrageous! Even the clothing is unreal. I went to MI last week, and the prices in thrift stores was cheaper than half price days here!

JulieR 03-31-2011 03:04 PM

The Frederick, MD, Goodwill doesn't usually have fabric either. Thank goodness for Craigslist!

Glad I didn't make the drive to Frederick!!! There's another in either Hagerstown or Germantown, but Rockville is about as far north as I'm willing to drive. And it has to take a LOT for me to cross the Potomac Ocean (River).

Nonlocals: apologies for inside-the-beltway "humor".

Now Salvation Army... mmm... another exploration to make.

Craigslist, eh? Really? I'll have to check it out.

Don't give those cotton shirts to your DH, use the fabric! lol

earthwalker 03-31-2011 03:41 PM

Well I think you did well, despite not finding fabric. It can be very hit and miss....either famine or plenty in the fabric department! Half the fun is the hunt and just rummaging....amazing what you can find.

PaperPrincess 03-31-2011 04:30 PM

Don't have fabric at our Salvation Armies, but Friday is 5 for $5. I'm making a quilt from recycled men's shirts, so I'm going to get 5 more tomorrow. not as cheap as I've read some folks can get them for, but a lg or x lg men's long sleeve shirt yields quite a bit of fabric for a buck.

The Goodwill I used to haunt in Bend was a brand new store. It was so disappointing though. The prices were outrageous and the store was already looking dirty. I'd rather shop at the Salvation Army or the thrift store that was ran by the Methodist Church. Even though Tuesdays were 50% off for Seniors, they never asked my age. Don't know if that is a good thing or not.

I don't blame you one bit! I'm right there with you, only I don't like to cross the PO the other direction. About half the time I end up just taking the first road that looks busy and hoping it crosses 50!

I do head toward Baltimore a good bit, though. Don't forget to check their Craigslist, too.

Renee110 03-31-2011 06:29 PM

It's supposed to snow tomorrow in CALIFORNIA?????

Egads!!!

ergranny46 03-31-2011 08:33 PM

Our Goodwill store doesn't have any fabric either and I tried to buy some ties for a crazy quilt but they were too expensive ($2.99 to $5.00).

mar32428 04-01-2011 03:53 AM

Goodwill bought out a Rooms to Go a mile from my house. I checked them out one time and the prices were a shock. It seems everything within 50 miles of Mickey in Orlando is priced for the tourists. i haven't gone back.

Our gw doesn't always have fabric. It is definitely hit and miss. I always look at it as a treasure hunt!

Happy Hunting!

pipp5 04-01-2011 04:08 AM

I found some vintage curtain panels and a dress in a size way too big for me, but made with beautiful fabric, it's currently being turned into an apron with matching potholders.

I was told the reason goodwill prices r so high is because they r only obligated to give 17percent rest is profit for them. Out thrift store owner told me that it is a church store for the poor. They to do have very little fabric and very dirty!

tdvxh 04-01-2011 04:20 AM

I saw some fabric in our RED WHITE AND BLUE store. I didn't like what they had but someone might. Hamiton Twp. NJ

sew_sew 04-01-2011 04:29 AM

there are more thift stores then Goodwill in our area........only one regularly has fabric.

ellenmg 04-01-2011 04:38 AM

As an ex-Marylander (Olney/Rockville), I appreciate the Beltway humor!!!
Do you have a Goodwill Outlet Center near you? They sell the stuff at $1.10 a pound. It is the stuff that does not sell, all in huge bins, all mixed up but sometimes I can find duvet covers, large men's shirts or dresses. Now I use them for recycled grocery totes but you never know...Now I will qualify this by saying sometimes there are some very creepy people in there and it has a "unique" smell. Anything I get goes directly into the washing machine. But a duvet cover for 2 bucks?

pieces 04-01-2011 04:51 AM

I've never found any quilters cotton fabric at any of our resale shops here in Mo. either but- I keep looking.

cjaye44 04-01-2011 05:01 AM

I used to find some great fabric there but lately, the last year, there has been nothing usable. A lot of real junk  . And their prices have really gotten higher. I guess you have to go every day and just know when it's going to be put out to get lucky. It's a 50 mile RT for me to the closest one and with the price of gas these days, it's not feasible. Not that I really need more fabric   . But it's still the thrill of the hunt!!

Olivia's Grammy 04-01-2011 05:22 AM

We just had a Goodwill shop open. I went on Tuesday bc that was my day to run errands. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I got a senior discount of 25%. I found designers tops, that I would never pay full price for. Also 4 pieces of fabric, two suitable for quilting and the other two for clothing. I'll be going back often on Tuesdays.

Grandma Libby 04-01-2011 06:21 AM

Hey - good you found the GOOD WILL. You may, indeed, NEED that coat!

Ann S. 04-01-2011 06:40 AM

Our Goodwill hangs their fabric with the bedspreads and sheets. Don't forget to look in that section too.

GGrammie 04-01-2011 07:11 AM

Our Goodwill and fabric is a hit and miss thing
we have a goodwill not far from where i live and I pop in whenever I'm in that area..Sometimes plenty and sometimes nothing.
Cost for most items of fabric is .99cents. Last time I found some was all packaged up in a plastic bag...About 3 yards or so and was only .99...I got it and it looks great and I can use it.

Rettie V. Grama 04-01-2011 07:14 AM

I find in Goodwill that the people who work there are not familiar with the word 'fabric' Next time, just go where the sheets and blankets are hanging. Usually I find something useful in the way of fabric at the beginning of that section. I make Crib Quilts and to keep the cost down, I go to Good will or Salvation Army for new fabric for them. 2 weeks ago, I purchased from SA 2 yards of fabric for $1.75 and this week I purchased 2 yards to $2.50 from GoodWill. Both good quality, just different retailers. SA less expensive on everything. Plus, according to records, their CEO get paid less than any others at any thrift store.

catmcclure 04-01-2011 08:08 AM

I've been in the process of making a red/black/white quilt for my hubby for several years. I was at Goodwill in my town recently and found the perfect backing. It will make the quilt totally reversible. It's a humongous border fabric. 15" strip of totally MOD flowers. The rest is a large block repeat of red with white dots and a stylized flower. There's 5-1/2 yards so I can have the perfect backing. I think I paid $4.

This week I found a four yard piece of Kona Bay fabric (Hawaiian flowers) for $3.

countrycottage 04-01-2011 09:23 AM

I've never found any fabric at the Goodwill stores around here either.

I found some fabric one day but it was really ugly!

Iamquilter 04-01-2011 10:33 AM

After someone posted about going to Hancocks the other day I went to ours and got some fabric for backings on my charity quilts for $1.00 per yard and one piece for $2.00 also found out that they have 15% off every first Wednesday of the month for senior over 55. Know where I'm going because we most always got to town on Wednesdays.
