I found a remedy for always having to chase my foot control ! I found these round gripper pads at the dollar tree store . 4 to a pack for $1.00 . They work great !!! Exact size for my foot control . Will not slip on carpeting , I didn't try them on a bare floor . Annie

Good idea :!: I chase my foot control all over the hardwood floor  And ~ I have some of this stuff left over from lining my camper shelves. Now - where did I put it?

I moved to a home with laminate floors and when unpacking found a scrap from shelf lining and it works very well. Great tip.

CindyBee 05-14-2009 12:54 AM

That's a great idea! I'm tired of chasing too, so I'm going to look for these.

Chele 05-14-2009 12:57 AM

How clever! I must get some! There goes my right leg exercise!

tlrnhi 05-14-2009 01:15 AM

That's a great idea!

reneebobby 05-14-2009 01:59 AM

Thanks for the great idea at first I thought I was the only one. But it turns out this is a problem for many of us.

Izy 05-14-2009 04:01 AM

I use a 12" of the same type of stuff, but I still manage to push it across it, so just the other day I had the brainwave to put a bit of sticky stuff, what you use for posters along the bottom edge of the foot, it hasn't moved once now.

Also I have a 2" x 2" X 6" length of wood directly infront of my foot control, as I have alot of problems with my ankle and my leg was aching dreadfully as I suspended my foot inbetween stitches, such as when you are doing applique around small curves, stopping and starting. So now I can rest my heel on the wood and just use my toes on the foot pedal...no more pain!!

Piedmont Quilter 05-14-2009 04:11 AM

I found them! Hey, for once they were right where I thought they were :D :D

Loretta ~ One of the first machines I ever had, at about 11 - 12 years old, was my grandmother's old Brother machine. It had knee control only. To be honest, I could control speed with it better than I can with foot pedal. If the machine I am using now had one, I definatley would set up to use  Give it a try and see if it's for you ~ if not, you can always go back to the foot pedal.

I had a knee control with my old Bernina. It NEVER slipped on the floor.
:-)

My Singer Touch and Sew had a knee control. That one needs a cleaning REALLY bad. Hasn't been used in years.

My Kenmore has the foot

sewjoyce 05-14-2009 05:13 AM

What a great tip!! Thanks!!

mytwopals 05-14-2009 07:15 AM

One of my mother's early sewing machines came in a cabinet specifically made for the machine. I believe it was a singer 1950's model. It had a knee control, too. The knee control was just a lever, which when used controlled a foot control mounted on it's side within the cabinet. The foot control could be removed and used as a foot control on the floor, also.

I'm sure it would work FABULOUSLY on hard floors. I'm constantly chasing my foot pedal around. I have sheets of the stuff --- somewhere :? ... need to find it....

I thought I was the only one too! Great idea for fixing the problem.

I wish I could find a knee control for my Pfaff.....I sewed for years in a factory using a pfaff machine with a knee control and I loved it!. But that was an industrial machine....I didnt know you could get them for domestic machines!

My old Singer in cabinet has a place to put the foot control to make it a knee controller. I like it much better than using the foot control. I bought one of the Sta Put mats for the foot controls and it works great. If you have carpet put industrial velcro hook tape on the bottom of the control. It won't go anywhere. I have to use two hands to pull it from the carpet. :D

littlehud 05-14-2009 06:06 PM

Thanks for the great tip. I need to try that. My dad gave me a strip of the stuff you use under rugs so they won't slip. I put it under my machine because it would slip on my table when I was trying to quilt. It worked great. No more slipping.

Shemjo 05-14-2009 06:16 PM

Loretta, the knee control is easier to use than the foot control because it stays put! I don't have one set up for my current machine, but I sew on an older model sometimes and I LOVE it! I am considering getting aconvertor set up for my current machine and cabinet. I have a thingy for my foot pedal, but I still chase it around on the carpet. I have tried other remedies, but I find them wanting. The knee control is always right there!

Good idea, StitchinMamaw. I've been using a square of the cupboard liner that someone else mentioned. I went to a class and the instructor said these gripper things work great when you are machine quilting. Use the grippers instead of or if you don't have the gripper quilting gloves...I paid $9.50 for my quilting gloves.....4/ $1.00 grippers seems like a pretty good substitute to me. Thanks for sharing.

Skeat 05-20-2009 05:02 AM

~Sigh~.....I have that and my foot control still tries to dance w/me! And, I have a cross bar that it sneaks under and keeps my machine running a few extra stitches before I realize where it went! I am on a slick concrete floor...thus is prob my problem...but, today...I am going for the hot glue gun and will zap the bottom to see if that will fix my problem:)I've had it!LOL Skeat

sandpat 05-20-2009 05:32 AM

Thanks this is a great idea!....a mouse pad will work well too if you have an extra one of those laying around.

Bevanger 05-20-2009 05:45 AM

Cool. I gotta see if I can find some. It drives me batty when I'm always chasing mine

I use a mouse pad under my sewing machine. It stops it from sliding on my table and jumping when sewing fast

BellaBoo 05-20-2009 07:21 AM

Sometime just turning the controller around so you are not pushing it forward when stepping on it may work to keep it in place. My grandmother attached a small wooded picture frame to her cement floor and set her foot controller in that. She took off the bottom piece so the frame looked like an upside down U. I don't know how she attached it to the floor but it stayed there for years.

I love that "rubbery" stuff. I have a length of it under my quilted tablecloth which is on a glass tabletop -- it prevents The Cat from using it as a slip n slide.... I also put it under the cutting mat on my cutting table. It's one of those big white ones, and the board that is the top of the table is that white-coated stuff that is slippery. This really keeps it in place. But hadn't thought to use it for the foot pedals. Cool!

borntoquilt 05-21-2009 04:22 PM

a friend had an old Elna with knee speed control. I found it hard to use AT FIRST and then loved it..

tigerlily11 05-22-2009 11:23 PM

I used a knee control in High School. Loved it. Wish I had one now.

the knee lever is for my machine's foot lift:)Which is really great when doing curves...you can lift slightly w/your knee while keeping both hands on the block to curve:)

All of the suggestions you all have given for using the rubbery stuff are great. I've used the stuff for my sewing machine foot pedal but I also use it under the white cutting boards in the kitchen when I'm cutting meat and veggies. The white cutting boards on the slick counter top was always a huge safety issue with me as nothing stayed put and when you are wielding a butcher knife the size of your arm, you want things to be stationary. The rubber stuff works great for stopping the movements of the cutting board. I also have a small square of the stuff that I leave on my glass cake pedastal and another that I leave in my cake carrier domes so when I put a cake on the beautiful pedastal or take a cake to a potluck it doesn't slide off the plate or slide around in the carrier messing up the frosting while in transit. Wonderful stuff...now why didn't I think of inventing it? I'd be rich!!!!

if you cut that rubbery stuff into strips and then staple it over the top edge of a plastic (or wire) hanger, it keeps the shoulders of your clothing from EVER slipping off. if you hang a small piece over the bottom wire or bar of a hanger, you can hang fabric over it and it will not slide off.

OH! A NEW PLACE TO HIDE MY STASH FROM MY DH!!!

THANKS!!!

AnnaK 11-27-2009 08:24 AM

I took one of these and hot glued it to the back of the pedal. That way it doesn't come off or slip off.

Iluv2quilt 11-27-2009 08:25 AM

Perfect! I'm always chasing my foot pedal around!

stitchinMamaw 11-27-2009 08:27 AM

That's what I"ll be doing , too . I had 2 grandkids staying with us over the summer . Well mine got all crumpled up . Kids / grands gotta love 'em  Annie

sdparent 11-27-2009 08:30 AM

That gripper stuff is the best!!! I put it under my runner rugs on the hardwood floors and they stay put. We used it in our campers to keep the dishes from sliding around while traveling down the roads. So many uses...

butterflywing 11-27-2009 09:06 AM

i cut it to fit one of my kitchen drawers and now my sharp knives don't slide around and get all banged up.
