I use an old necklace and string it through the binding after I have wrapped it around my hand. Or if you have a knee lift for your machine and can invert it, you can put the binding on that and it rolls off nicely.

I use the tp rolls but never thought of putting it on a ribbon around my neck. Thanks for the tip.

I usually just have it dragging wherever it goes and then,

have to stop and unravel it from all the twisting & turning during the stitching.....

and then have to pick the snips of thread off from the part that was trailing on the linty carpet......

by that time, I am ready for my 4PM......

I used to work at a fabric shop (err- money pit for employee) and always wrapped ribbon, elastic, etc. around thumb and baby finger in figure eight design. No wrinkles and creases to touch up with an iron.

Try this with your binding. Place the bundle on your lap and you'll find it works smoothly and doesn't fall off. Leftover strips (bundles) stored in see through container for scrap-type bindings. No pins, paper or rubberbands touching the fabric....:-)

I had to update this post...I tried the binding on the toilet paper roll this time. I used a string to put it around my neck.

I must report - that was the EASIEST binding I've ever applied! I can't believe how simple it was, and how fast it went. No more puddles on the floor for me :)

Just a question - when you (anyone on this board, not any particular poster) apply binding, do you pin it before sewing? Because some of the posts here talk like maybe there's a way to do it without pinning. I pin it all the way down one side of the piece to the corner, miter the corner, and pin the next side, but it's a pain and I'm always stabbing myself with pins. If there's an easier way, I'd love to know.

I pinned in the beginning but have since stopped doing it. I found that as I sewed along the binding, it would begin to pucker....works much better (for me) not using any pins.

For the mitered corners, I purchased the miter cornering tool from Clotilde's, and it works great.
