Not Allowed!

What’s not allowed in your sewing space?

For me it’s coffee and tea. Even if I’m doing hand sewing away from my sewing room the sewing stays on one seat and I eat or drink on another.

Anyone one else got any self-imposed rules?

feline fanatic 08-13-2019 09:41 AM

For me it is my pets. No pets allowed in my sewing spaces, too many dangerous things for them to get into. I do get the occasional breach in security by one of my cats but they are quickly corralled and banished. As much as I love them and adore their company I can't have them in there when I am working. I do find it amusing when I hear my Yoshi chirping and trilling on the other side of the door and I see a paw feeling about under the door. I only allow myself water in a capped container. No food except the occasional bite size chocolate.

zozee 08-13-2019 09:47 AM

Our dog is not allowed upstairs or in our finished basement. Only one the main living level. My sewing room is up there. He’s a Golden Retriever. We don’t want to deal with dog hair in three levels, nor do I want him to accidentally step on a pin or the pedal while I’m sewing (happened once at our old house and scared the crap out of me!).

I usually have just water to drink in mg sewing room, but if in the mood for tea or coffee, I keep it far away from my fabric and machine.

Tothill 08-13-2019 10:00 AM

No restrictions in my space.

Charlie, the cat hangs out in there much of the time whether I am there or not. The dogs follow me in the room and stay while I am working in there.

Patches, is long gone now, but he used to pay on the ironing board right up against the iron. I have no idea how he did not singe his fur.

I do have lint rollers and a broom. Bare concrete floors make it easy to sweep up the fur and any random pins and needles.

I enjoy the company of my critters.

sewbizgirl 08-13-2019 10:14 AM

Can't think of a single "not allowed" for my sewing space. Maybe quilt police? :D

Mousie 08-13-2019 10:39 AM

no food and my water which is medically necessary has to have it's cap on
when I'm not actually drinking.
I have a well behaved cat but she was never allowed in my sewing studio
for her own safety.
Now I have redone a room and moved back into the house we shall see
how things go. She's pretty good at not bothering things as long as you
tend to her needs.
I'm getting a chihauhau and I don't expect problems.
I will keep the door closed on the room that holds the fabrics.
I might have to have noise canceling headphones when my husband
wants to use the computer behind me though. :D

grannie cheechee 08-13-2019 10:46 AM

My DH. He gave away FW, and he picked up a rotary cutter that I didn't know how to change the blade yet.

Stitchnripper 08-13-2019 10:58 AM

Nothing is not allowed. I spilled white wine on a quilt once. No stains, but it hasn't happened since. I don't drink red wine up there because I know it makes me loopy. I save it for winter evenings before dinner, downstairs.

Tartan 08-13-2019 11:13 AM

I don’t allow liquids in my sewing area either.

rryder 08-13-2019 11:14 AM

Can't think of anything not allowed except the Quilting Police. Bubba, our 80 pound dog, has his very own spot on the guest bed that occupies part of my sewing area and he likes to snooze up there when I'm working on a quilt. Sometimes he ends up snoozing on WIPs that have been stashed on the guest bed- but I figure that's what the lint roller is for LOL! I am careful to pick up fallen pins and needles immediately so he doesn't step on one- but being vigilant about that is worth it to me to be able to enjoy his company.

I don't like to have food in my sewing room. Unfortunately I do not have any pets so that is not an issue. My DH is afraid to touch anything in my sewing room and it is way too messy for his style. (He even kept his desk at work pristine.) But i do drink coffee or tea or water into the room, or I find that I go too long without fluids, which causes other problems. Sometimes I start shaking because I have forgotten the time and need to eat something. My daughters rarely come into the room because neither one sews.

juliasb 08-13-2019 12:46 PM

There are 2 things not allowed in my sewing studio. #1 is pets of any kind. No dog, no cats no birds or tropical fish and no hamsters or gerbils. The second things is anyone who says a word about threads on the floor! That person is not invited back for a second time.
I know I am brutal about these 2 things. For me this is my way of life.

SillySusan 08-13-2019 02:15 PM

The only restriction I have is ... No bare feet belonging to animals or humans! Pins, needles, etc. get embedded in the carpeting and can be "found" by those bare feet!

tallchick 08-13-2019 02:37 PM

I’m not one who snacks so food won’t be found in my sewing room, all beverages are in a lidded tumbler so no issues there, and my cats well what can I say, I fail at a herding cats. On occasion they will come wandering into my sewing area, but that’s usually to pester me for treats when they wake up from their naps, they have me well trained. I keep lint rollers on hand by the dozen for threads and cat hair. Like Sewbiz, the only thing not allowed in my sewing area are the Quilt Police.

Onebyone 08-13-2019 02:44 PM

I can't think of anything not allowed as far as food or drink or pets. I'd rather have my dog in there then my DH. He gets on my nerves in my sewing room.

Jingle 08-13-2019 02:57 PM

My pets aren't allowed in my sewing room. I never take fluids in there, it isn't far from the kitchen.

cindi 08-13-2019 03:48 PM

No bare feet is my only rule. Well, not so much a rule as much as a warning, lol. I’ve got cup holders in my cutting table, a shelf of snacks so I can eat, drink and be merry in my sewing room. Heck, if I could fit a fridge and microwave in there I’d probably never come out. We have no pets and DH never touches my tools - heck, he won’t even come in my room unless he knocks on the doorframe first!

I couldn't think of anything either, but I agree the quilt police are not allowed in my sewing room!

marilynr 08-13-2019 04:25 PM

I have always had cats & until my latest one, Waddles, none wanted in my sewing room. But Waddles loves to come
in & lay on my ironing board or wherever she can find a comfy place. However, I can no longer allow her my sewing
room because 2 weeks ago she developed an abscess in her front paw, which is being treated with antibiotics &
soaking her paw !! The vet says she punctured her paw with something & the only thing I can think of, since she is
an indoor cat, is she hurt herself in my sewing room. So sorry this happened & I miss having her with me.

ILoveToQuilt 08-13-2019 04:33 PM

My dogs. Both are fluffy, long haired (Malamute/husky and German Shepherd) and I don't want their hair on my fabric or in my machine.

ckcowl 08-13-2019 04:40 PM

Nothing but water allowed. I do not eat or drink other than water in my sewing room or when hand stitching.

Jordan 08-13-2019 04:54 PM

My cup of coffee in the morning. I am too clumsy so I keep my cup in the kitchen and I sew on the dining room table far far away.

osewfast 08-13-2019 04:54 PM

Since I sew in my kitchen - I can't restrict food/drink...but try to be cautious about it. I keep my water/soft drink glass on the counter instead of on the table where I'm sewing. I find that i don't nibble/snack when on a sewing spree - so that's actually a Good thing. If I take a lunch break, I'm cautious about what food is near by work area.
Otherwise the only thing I absolutely won't allow around me is bad, sour attitudes! hahaha! =)
Blessings,
Donna Mc

Quiltah Mama 08-13-2019 04:56 PM

Nothing is banned from my sewing room, I eat (carefully and responsibly), I drink coffee while sewing, and it sits on my mug rug that sits right beside my sewing machine, and I really need the coffee when I experience insomnia and am in my sewing studio by 3AM (it's a menopause thing ) and if I am sewing in the afternoon my water is in a mason jar with a lid and straw sitting on my mug rug. My cat practically lives in my studio, she actually gets to spend more time in there than I can, I have to admit I get jealous at times, LOL. She is my studio companion and often I find her napping on the area rug in the room even when I'm not in there, and I feed her in there too. I no longer have a dog, so that is not an issue, she was old and we had to put her down a few years ago. All the grands have napped in the porta-crib in there while I was babysitting at one point or another too. And DH will come and visit and gab, but doesn't stay long only because the extra chair is a kitchen chair, not a recliner, LOL. And the quilt police have never showed up, and if they ever did, I guess that would be the first "not allowed". :p

Mariposa 08-13-2019 05:29 PM

The quilt police ~~~

quiltingshorttimer 08-13-2019 09:21 PM

no smoking (entire house); no pets in sewing or LA spaces; I do always have something to drink, but always in a lidded mug, no snacks that would leave stains (non greasy stuff or chocolate); no negativity! I also keep track of sunlight that might fade fabrics.

Mkotch 08-14-2019 02:33 AM

Not allowed - "borrowing" any scissors

Lena1952 08-14-2019 03:33 AM

My sewing studio is seperately from my house. The only rule I have is: No complaining children. They know if the house is not on fire and no one has stop breathing or is bleeding, not to tell me. No " Mom, David is doing.......". They are welcome to come in and join me at their machine or just to chat. We have had some interesting conversations in that studio over the years and sewn some incredible items together. All four of my sons are well versed in sewing and hardly ask me to repair something as they can handle it themselves. They are grown now but the same rules apply to my grandchildren.

lindaschipper 08-14-2019 04:04 AM

Can't think of anything not allowed in my sewing room. All drinks must be in a caped container and placed on a trivet so I don't get water stains. Pets (cat and a Yorky) do wander in to tell me it's time to play or eat (again)...but they never bother anything at all. They seemed to know and respect that this is my space. Chocolate is always welcomed along with a roll of paper towels.

luvstoquilt 08-14-2019 04:08 AM

I don’t eat in my sewing room but I bring my water bottle. Mr. Peach loves to be in there with me and he mostly sleeps while I sew. There are no rules here.

Onebyone 08-14-2019 05:10 AM

no smoking (entire house)
I don't have any friends are family members that smoke so I never think about having someone wanting to smoking in my house but it would be a number one rule if a smoker came to my house.

Doggramma 08-14-2019 05:44 AM

I agree about no liquids. It only takes one “mishap” to tell me it’s a bad thing.

lindsayfarm 08-14-2019 06:50 AM

My sewing room is a 12 x 24 shed so I eat, drink and do whatever I want. I don't have any restrictions. I do not like negativity, so that is not allowed.

patsews 08-14-2019 06:57 AM

Negative thoughts are not allowed in my sewing room - just positive ones. Things like I can't do this pattern, it is too difficult for example. I only take drinking water in a container with a top that closes. I do have a candy stash occassionally. I try not to buy it very much since I do love to eat the stuff! Right now I have to fight the impulse to open the window and throw out my expensive water resavoir steam iron since it started leaking from the bottom of the resavoir - it does still heat up and produce steam. I guess I will have to give up and get another one soon.

Macybaby 08-14-2019 07:23 AM

Pretty much nothing is banned from my sewing space as it's open to the stairwell so I can't close it off. though I've discussed the option of putting a screen "wall" and door so I could keep the cats out . . . However I never take food up there.

My stash is in a sperate room, and that one I try to keep the pets and any food/drink out of there.

Sounds like this expensive iron you want to throw out has been causing some negative thoughts to come in. LOL!

Onebyone 08-14-2019 10:38 AM

Set it on a puppy pad. That will absorb the leak with no bulk underneath it. They are inexpensive and disposable. I use them for a lot of wet purposes such as door mats when it wet outside, any water leak, soaking up spilled liquid, and absorbing water from hand washed items I don't want to twist and wring.

KalamaQuilts 08-14-2019 02:21 PM

tv. anything else is pretty ok with me, although like onebyone I don't know anyone who smokes anymore anyway.

Peckish 08-14-2019 05:44 PM

My sewing/quilting room is not ever allowed to be without chocolate. :D

SusieQOH 08-14-2019 06:52 PM

My cats are allowed in my sewing room because Baby just sleeps and I keep my eye on Mookie until he finds a spot to curl up in. I love having them with me.
I don't eat or drink in my sewing room but I don't really have a rule. I just don't snack much.
My husband has no desire to walk in that room haha
