Oh My! FabricDepot!!!

Was in Portland Oregon yesterday and my DDIL took e to this store. Every quilt notion ever made I think! huge! lots of good fabrics, Moda, RJR, Riley Blale, Timeless treasures, precuts, Cuddle. I thought I died and went to heaven. Plus they have a website. Came right home to Nevada, and placed an order. First order was an additional 10% off the already 25% off. Joann's can't hold a candle or even a match to this place. Never saw anything like it even in California!

luvnquilt 01-31-2012 08:54 AM

I agree, it's a wonderful store, almost overwhelming. They have great online service too ;)

feline fanatic 01-31-2012 09:00 AM

It is one of my favorite on line places to shop.

Mad Mimm 01-31-2012 09:39 AM

I totally agree - Fabric Depot is such a wonderful place and it is so easy to get lost there. When people are headed there for the first time, I always advise them to eat a good-sized meal before they go, wear comfy shoes, bring water, and plan on going at least 20% over budget!!! It is no surprise that my last two birthdays have involved a trip to Fabric Depot to play.

QuiltnNan 01-31-2012 10:19 AM

what a wonderful experience! wish there was one near me.... or maybe not [too tempting] :)

Kim Bohannon 01-31-2012 10:20 AM

if it's that good, I have to check them out! thanks

Peckish 01-31-2012 10:32 AM

It is pretty awesome, and as earlier stated, their online service is very good. People from Seattle come by the busload to shop, and that's 160 miles. I'm surprised Seattle doesn't have a similar store. Maybe FD should expand! :)

Rosewood9 01-31-2012 10:40 AM

Looks like a great site, thanks for sharing!

quiltsRfun 01-31-2012 10:55 AM

It's definitely on my list for next time we're in Portland. I'll convince DH we need to take an early flight so I can have the day at Fabric Depot before heading for the coast. :) And maybe bring an empty suitcase. ;) Could also pick up a nice hostess gift for our niece where we always stay. She's a wonderful quilter who has been a great inspiration to me. Now I can hardly wait. Maybe I should look at airlines and flights after posting this.

dunster 01-31-2012 11:28 AM

One thing that many people don't realize is that if you buy 6 (or maybe it's 5?) of an identical item you can go to the wholesale window and get 40% off. Also you can buy a whole bolt and get 40% off. The summer outdoor sale has lots of fabric marked way down, and there are frequent sales where all quilting fabric is 35% off. But the best part of all is that there is such a huge selection of every major fabric line.

gramma nancy 01-31-2012 07:54 PM

I love Fabric Depot and go there when we are in Portland to visit DD. Everyone should know they have a great online store. TONS of sale fabrics -- great name brands for $4 and $5 a yard. Postage is very reasonable. Check it out.

Painiacs 01-31-2012 08:16 PM

Oh man! I would be in soooo much trouble!!!

owlvamp 01-31-2012 08:21 PM

If it's that good, I'll have to check them out! thanks for telling us.

auntpiggylpn 01-31-2012 09:28 PM

Ok, thanks! I had forgotten all about http://www.fabricdepot.com/index.php and now I am on their website, cruising their deals! I have ordered online from them in the past and always pleased with price, selection and service.

Cacklinghen 02-01-2012 06:54 AM

Wow! enjoy-will check it on line...

And it is fairly close to the airport ~ 122nd & Stark. About 10 blocks south of I84, pretty easy to find.

To give some of you gals/guys the size. The building is an old (large) Kmart store, it is nothing but fabrics, notions, books, etc., etc... BUT it is not just for us quilters, there is also home decor fabrics, polyester blends, though those sections are not as large as the 'cottons'. It is wonderful to just walk around a drool with all the choices. :)

ArtsyOne 02-01-2012 08:20 AM

Thanks so much for the tip and the directions too. I'm going to be in Portland on business in October, so I've already put it on my calendar.

sweetana3 02-02-2012 03:43 AM

I was lucky to get in Portland for the machine quilting expo and it was the same time the store had their fabulous sale. 25-35% off everything. The notions department is fantastic. Their buyer goes to many independent suppliers and keeps the latest and greatest on the shelf.

I also liked that I could take the train and walk less than 1/2 mile to get to the store. Did not need to rent a car just for that. Of course I would not have liked to have bought a huge bag of material and then walk back to the train.

amandasgramma 02-02-2012 03:47 AM

I hyperventilated the first time I went to it!! It's an AWESOME store!

sewbeadit 02-02-2012 04:49 AM

Yep, it is a really cool place and they do a great job with their on line orders. You can join their online list and get their emails every week.

Chay 02-02-2012 04:53 AM

FD is out of this world. We are going to Seattle next week for the NW Garden Show and can't hit Portland but can anyone recommend some stores in Seattle? We are staying by Pike Place but will have a car. I'm specifically looking for Kaffe but, you know .... love it all.

marymay 02-02-2012 05:20 AM

Just went to the site. All I can say is WOW.Thank You for this site

kathyz 02-02-2012 06:40 AM

There are four of us gals that make a trip to FD once a year. Also don't forget to check out The Powell Book Store. You can get great bargains on used quilt books. The store takes up a whole city block and you can take the train to downtown.

LOL Sounds like my advice when I take a group to a quilt show!

What is their web address ??

thrums 02-02-2012 07:24 AM

Big February sale online right now.

Peckish 02-02-2012 08:13 AM

Fabric Depot's web address is www.fabricdepot.com - or you can just google "fabric depot".

Everyone should sign up to be on the mailing list, whether you live close or not. Every month they send out a flyer that shows what's on sale and when, and there are four 40% coupons, one for each week. You can use these coupons online. They're not like Joann's, either - if you want something that's already 20% off, but you want to use your coupon to get a better price, they'll charge you the full price and take the 40% off of that.

kellen46 02-02-2012 08:27 AM

OH YES.....My first reaction was that it was heaven, or what heaven should look like.....I spent hours there and in the end I need three carts, two yard cart, one yard cart and every thing else cart. It took three of us to get it to the parking lot and it filled my car's back seat....Thank God for credit cards! Every quilter should go at least once. Just for the record Seattle has some great quilt shops and it has a wonderful remnant warehouse store but Fabric Depot is in a class by it's self. If you are flying in to Portland it is just a hop skip and a jump from the airport and way before the turn off to the coast....just in case you were planning on coming to Oregon.

judord 02-02-2012 08:30 AM

Yes, and I would like to pitch a tent there. My DS just sent me a gift card for my birthday! Yippee. What an adventure.

gypsylady5 02-02-2012 09:13 AM

I'll have to check them out. I'm always looking for bargains and Joann's doesn't have them! Neither does Walmart. Those are my two choices around here. Plus, of course, the quilt shops. I don't have a lot of money to spend on my passion, but maybe I can find a thing or two. Thanks for the lead.

urgodschild2 02-02-2012 09:27 AM

Thank you for this place. I have been checking out different places on the internet because I want to make my niece who has breast cancer a lap quilt and she loves the color purple. So my brain has envisioned a purple floral print and I have had no luck in finding what I want. The Fabric Depot has it. Thank you again.

There is a small quilt shop at the market that's fun to check out, but for Kaffe you should head over to Vashon Island to visit Island Quilter (http://www.islandquilter.com/). They have TONS of Kaffe and at $9.99 a yard, it's hard to beat their prices. It's a ferry ride away but SO worth the trip!

MiaA 02-02-2012 10:34 AM

Keep in mind that OR doesn't have sales tax so all shopping at Fabric Depot has a 'built-in' rebate right out of the gate (depending on whether your state has sales tax...)!

Marysewfun 02-02-2012 11:16 AM

Fabric Depot

Yes, I have heard of bus loads of people going to the store in Portland and making a whole day of it. They used to have a store in Salem, OR, too - - - seemed like they did a fabulous business - but alas, they closed it.

cschwartz 02-02-2012 11:57 AM

I'll check them out, soon.

joann11 02-02-2012 12:48 PM

Another good site is Fabric.com . After you spend $35. free shipping..

quiltingnonie 02-02-2012 12:54 PM

FD is the best! I try to get there at least once a month. It never fails, that no matter what I am searching for, I will find it there! I order online from them also, but after being in the store, their online selection seems puny! And all of their fabric is top quality :)

PokerDiva 02-02-2012 01:46 PM

Yes , I used to live up there and I miss it dearly.

kjym 02-02-2012 02:11 PM

When our kids lived in portland that was a must stop. Here is a idea that I have used. get bulk mailing boxes from the post office and preprint the labels. Pack you purchases and drop them off at the post office. If you are staying at a Hotel give to the front desk and they will take it to the post office for you. Love the place to shop but I always get into trouble.
Also if you get a box and haven't used up your luggage allowed on the airline pack a big box full and check it in That works also.
a Fun place to go . kjym Kathy

Scakes 02-02-2012 03:24 PM

I checked out their website. Great place but could get in serious trouble here. Found some free patterns to download also. Thanks for sharing.
