OH MY !! My Thrift Store Find:

My DH and I were in a thrift store we had never been in before. I asked a clerk if they had any fabric and she pointed to a board and said if there was any, it would be on that board. I had already been over there so I started looking near the linens on a table. There was a plastic bag all stapled together and I could see it had charm squares in Christmas patterns. I grabbed that bag so fast and held it close to me until we checked out. When I got to the truck, I opened it and almost passed out ! It had 5 charm squares of 100 fabrics and two packages containing 7 FQ's each. So I ended up with 500 charm squares and 14 fat quarters, all in the same fabrics for $3.97. These are in the original package, never opened. Earlier in the day, at another thrift store, I bought the brand new Fons and Porters 'easy quilts' magazine Spring 2013 for 50 cents and the price is $6.99. I have to wonder who the original owners were and why these items ended up in a thrift store. I also bought a beautiful new sewing basket for $3.00. I have quite a reputation for picking up bargains and today I feel very blessed. Guess the family is getting Christmas quilts this year !!!

erstan947 02-26-2013 09:00 AM

Great save.....it could have ended in the land fill .....I think my family will toss all my fabric and related tools in the trash. :(

PattR 02-26-2013 09:05 AM

You are really lucky. I think I will run out to my local thrift stores right now to see what I can find. Its been raining several days, but there is sunshine today.

Not too long ago i gave three new quilts to our Habitat for Humanity charity in town. I just wasn't in love with them, so they went. Now the last quilt i did went to Precious Child charity since I talked to a woman who gladly took it for auction. I have hoped whom ever got my quilts liked them. one was a nice convergence quilt with beautiful fabrics but it didn't hang correctly and I didn't feel like trying to block it, so away it went. i have enough stress in life.
glad you got such good deals!!

QuiltnNan 02-26-2013 10:05 AM

Congrats on your great finds!

SherriB 02-26-2013 03:48 PM

Wow! You made a great purchase! Our thrift stores seldom have any fabrics at all . My best find was a piece of lime green minky for $2. It fit the back of a baby quilt perfectly.

Teddybear Lady 02-26-2013 03:57 PM

I haven't checked our thrift stores in a while. I did find some solids last year at our local Goodwill. Sounds like you had a great day!

I've already told my family that this had best not happen with my "stuff"...if it does I will come back to haunt them and I will not be a friendly ghost!:D:D
By the way, great find Wanabee. I love to hear stuff like that.

maryb119 02-26-2013 04:27 PM

wraez 02-26-2013 04:29 PM

Wow I never find these great treasures at thrift stores! The local Goodwill has been charging outrageous prices and they told me they throw away fabrics, threads, beads, all that kind of stuff!

sustraley 02-26-2013 04:33 PM

Wow That's Wonderful. Good for you!!!

NorthernSkyQuilts 02-26-2013 04:59 PM

Well, put it in a will--what to do with your stuff. It is too valuable to throw in a dump. if they don't want to mess with it, at least they should offer it on free cycle or give to a charity or organization that makes quilts for others.

Debbie C 02-27-2013 04:23 AM

SCORE!!! I love a successful thrift shopping day!!

Little Sue 4.9 02-27-2013 04:57 AM

Thrift store finds are the best.I go out at least once a monthand come home with pieced quilt tops in the bags. Keep searching the stores we all get lucky once in a while.

That is so sad! Folks donate and they throw it away. I believe I would write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper letting folks know not to take there stuff for donation to that Goodwill because they throw it away. I also would contact the head of Goodwill in that state and report what they are doing.

Glenda m 02-27-2013 05:26 AM

My daughter and I went to a thrift store and there were three 'bags' there. I picked up two and she said go ahead and get the third. Glad I did. LOL It had the best 'stuff' in it. Don't you just love things like that?

Sandy65 02-27-2013 05:28 AM

What a find. I would be in heaven to find that. Happy sewing.

I agree! Put it in a will. Thats what I have. Its all going to folks I know that sew, quilt, embroider, serge, etc. Quilt guilds are a good source to donate it all to. I've already donated a few sewing machines I had stored in a shed to one of the local quilt guilds. I upgraded my machines so gave it to them to have for use when they meet for folks to use.

Wow! What a find! "One man's trash is another man's treasure!" I go often to thrift stores too. I once bought cover for a baby bassinet that had rows & rows of fabric & lace. Bought a ruffled tiered skirt of valentine theme for $1, yds of fabric. I look for sheets & pillowcases too...

bunniequilter 02-27-2013 06:07 AM

Nice find! Wish I could find goodies like that in a thrift store.

Wanabee Quiltin 02-27-2013 06:12 AM

We were in Daphne, Alabama also and they take all the fabrics and put them in comforter bags. I went into the store about a month ago and bought 3 bags full for $5.99 each. One of the bags had about 7 yards of black velveteen and 5 yards of red velveteen plus some beautiful drapery fabric which I will use for purses and totes. Some of the great fabric I might sell here on the board once I get home.

Geri B 02-27-2013 06:32 AM

None of the goodwill stores that I "haunt" ever have fabric and I have never seen a sewing machine there.....how can they put these (sewing machines) on line for auction....wonder what store they grab them for. Besides that though it seems many of the things offered are a bit overpriced. I have seen the same stuff on shelves for a long time....

lpsewing 02-27-2013 07:00 AM

congrats on your awesome find, how about a picture....please

Tink's Mom 02-27-2013 07:16 AM

I never find good fabric at the thrift stores.....until this past Monday. Found 2 bags, each $2.99. They contained some yardage and some cutoffs. Also lots of lame and a couple of other fabrics....those will find a new home with a crafter who makes doll clothes. I'll deliver them to her this weekend.
The one fabric I remember using in the past. Now I will be able to use it for my little granddaughter!!! It is such a girly girl fabric.

mjhaess 02-27-2013 07:39 AM

Congrats on your find...Isn't it fun to find a good deal and cheap.....I go to the thrift stores often with my friend and it is surprising all the good things we find.....

newbiequilter 02-27-2013 07:50 AM

Yesterday I took a stroll thru one of the larger chain thrift stores and OH MY, they certainly are proud of their items. They have recently moved to a larger location with better lighting and the store is very well organized but their prices are pretty silly for a thrift store. I was specifically looking for baskets and they had some, but price-wise I can buy new ones at the dollar store. I find that the "independent" thrift/second-hand stores have more reasonable prices...at least in my area.

mighty 02-27-2013 07:50 AM

Great find!!!!!

MargeD 02-27-2013 08:24 AM

What an awesome find, congratulations. I need to find out if there are any thrift stores in my local area, haven't had much lucking getting out and getting acclimated to our new surroundings.
