Yeah!!!!! our super WalMart only has the prepackaged fabric:( you are very fortunate:)

Nolee 06-14-2011 05:09 AM

I went there yesterday and they never carried the prepackaged. Besides that, the employee hasn't a clue what is going to happen. She was an older lady who had to write out the slip for each piece of material I bought by hand, then use a calculator to figure out how much it was for each one. She said they won't give them scanners for fabric and they have to do it all by hand and pin each slip to each fabric. That is the only department they do that in and it takes her three times as long to wait on people because it takes up so much time. According to her, the managers will NOT be thrilled with this change because it requires someone to be on the floor at all times, something managers do NOT want.

We shall see how this turns out. I'm sure all Walmarts are different.

charlaraye 06-14-2011 05:20 AM

If they are bring fabric departments back into Super Wal-Marts, do not expect to be right away. It will not be added back into the store until time for their next remodel which is usually every five years.

maryp 06-14-2011 05:21 AM

oh yea . guess ill be going to walmart more often

Sewfine 06-14-2011 05:26 AM

Yeap!!

valsma 06-14-2011 05:32 AM

We never lost ours, it was just never restocked. Now it has been moved in the re-design of our local store. Fabric is nicer, but up by $1-$2 a yard in some cases. The dept. is a little smaller but much more organized.

Look no WalMart bashing.

Will be glad when it returns to my WM. I did get a deal when they closed. I bought all their black on black fabric for $.50 a yard. They had 7 different patterns and about 35 yards in total. I use a lot of black as accent, so it was great.

MaggieLou 06-14-2011 06:16 AM

There was an article in the New York Times or one of the big newspapers that all the Wal-Marts are bringing back bolt fabric and should be done by September. I'll believe the Sept. time frame when I see it but it looks like all stores will be getting the fabric back.

Just hope they bring back the great line of Cranston fabrics. Looking forward to it!!!!!
Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, it WAS a big mistake to take fabrics & notions out of the stores, when they were the ONLY local source for many ... and party goods and scrapbooking are NOT selling like they expected. LOL Scrapbooking has peaked and sales have dropped, while sewing and quilting continue to GROW in popularity. :)

The quality of fabric is hit or miss wherever you buy it. You are so lucky not to have lost your fabric at Wal Mart. We are getting ours back the last week in June. I talked to the store manager and to one of the women who used to run the fabric department, and they are setting up to do business! froggyintexas

CLMQuilter 06-14-2011 07:23 AM

I spoke to the lady in our Wal Mart that still has fabric and she said they are keeping the fabric department.
We have another Wal Mart near me but have not checked to see if there are bring the fabric back there too

Grandma Peg 06-14-2011 07:41 AM

Nice they listened.

countrycottage 06-14-2011 07:57 AM

Sure hope the fabric department returns to our Walmart. We have to drive over 40 miles to buy fabric now.

tryitall 06-14-2011 08:17 AM

My DH said that he heard that they will be bringing back the fabric and crafts dept, plus some others, by the last of the year. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tryitall 06-14-2011 08:17 AM

Same here. We drive 35 miles.

lillybeck 06-14-2011 08:24 AM

Yea for us.

mlmachado 06-14-2011 08:26 AM

I would really love it if walmart carried fabric again. Up here in NNY, there are not that many shops to go to. I've found a couple but nothing like the Variety in Arizona or Colorado

Nell Dwyer 06-14-2011 08:47 AM

Wal Mart? YUK-that store gives me the creeps, when they had fabric it was LOW quality, and OLD-maybe that's why it always shredded or fell apart-Beware-Jo Ann's is Quality and worth the drive.

lucy78 06-14-2011 09:04 AM

we r not getting it back, in columbia , tn.......hate that.

Joan Gaddis 06-14-2011 09:09 AM

i live in ga. and they are putting yardage in our walmart. it only had pre-packaged!!! yes they heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QuiltingHaven 06-14-2011 09:19 AM

Yes, our WalMart is getting back all their fabric - whohoo. The clerk I talked to told me that "the stuff on the walls just wasn't selling!" Happy Day!

Granny K 06-14-2011 09:28 AM

I talked to the lady at Walmarts where they still had fabric and she said that they are putting it back in every store, not the pre cut fabric.
I was so glad to here it.

I do belive you...eventhough I just called the Wal Mart in Germantown, WI only to be told they were definately NOT getting fabric back. I hope they are wrong. :)

grannypat7925 06-14-2011 10:16 AM

Sure hope it comes back to our Super Walmarts here in Springfield.

dsch 06-14-2011 10:55 AM

According to a video posted here-I think-it stated that WM was opening 700 fabric departments out of all their stores. I asked my friend who was the fabric dept. head at our WM if this was true & she said maybe. According to the WM website, if your store was remodeled in the past & fabric was removed, it may not return. If your store is remodelling now or in the near future, it will keep/reinstate its fabric dept. However, there is no definite way to know which stores will reinstate. We can only hope that what was lost will be returned!

aronel 06-14-2011 11:20 AM

Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D

cedarvalleyquilts 06-14-2011 11:35 AM

Ours isn't getting theirs back, according to the store manager. It was never anything to brag about, but at least you could find some flannel and other home decorating fabrics...and sewing thread.

Their decision to pull out the fabrics was one of the reasons I opened a shop....our local WM (not even a superstore) never had the local customers in mind with a lot of the decisions they've made.

Christine

redmadder 06-14-2011 11:44 AM

Groceries is all I buy in WM. Life was getting strange when I had to stop at DolGen for stuff WM no longer carried. Doesn't look like we're going to get it here in St. Marys. Guess they'll just have to keep doing without my business.

teacherbailey 06-14-2011 12:24 PM

Hope my WalMart does the same!!!!!

Quilting Angel 06-14-2011 01:06 PM

Well I really hope our Walmart brings it back. I have 2 Super Walmarts in driving distance, but neither even has the precuts. I would be shocked if they bring it back here.

cooper 06-14-2011 01:26 PM

just my opinion, that packaged stuff is JUNK

I wouldnt want it given to me in any form.

they kept our fabric yardage dept after the reset, they put in some of that junk, as soon as the store setters left, the dept heads.....in their wisdom, moved it completely out of the dept, putting it outside marked down under tents as a sidewalk sale and I still wouldnt buy it

nstitches4u 06-14-2011 01:48 PM

They are building on to our WalMart so that they can make it into a Super WalMart. I hope they bring the fabric dept. back. They ran all the fabric stores out of business because their prices were lower, then they closed the fabric dept.

Jeanniejo 06-14-2011 03:39 PM

I just went to Walmart in Danville Va. today and the store was all being redone. They got rid of their fabric dept years ago. Today I saw bolts and bolts of new fabric waiting to be put on shelves! YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe someone does listen to quilters.

mshawii 06-14-2011 03:48 PM

Yes it is true, I just went to my stitchery group today and they told me that the new WalMart in Corneius Oregon, is going to have a fabric and yarn department. One of the members granddaughters is going to be the manager of it. She managed a fabric store in the same town till the store closed about 5 years ago. Now we shall wait to see what quality of fabric it will be. Jan

tupoms 06-14-2011 04:09 PM

Goody, I will be checking out my local W-M. Maybe I should ask the manager every time I go, too.

snipforfun 06-14-2011 04:10 PM

Our fabric dept. Never went away. A few years ago the mgr. Told me that our walmart sells more fabric than any other store in the chain.

Joeysnana 06-14-2011 04:18 PM

Last week there was a big empty spot where the fabric dept. used to be. This week there is a new fabric dept, in another area of the store. It is larger and has more bolts, ribbon, and craft items. I was so surprised to see it back!!

gangles 06-14-2011 04:50 PM

I was told by a lady that worked in the fabric dept. of Walmart for 15 years that they were putting fabric back into over 170 of their stores and that they admitted they had made a mistake by taking it out. Maybe my email to them helped a little too.
