I find that to be so sad. :( No offense to you but it sounds like he's a selfish jerk. My dh is not great about buying gifts on his own but he would never begrudge me buying them for myself. And whatever my hobby is, he's happy if it makes me happy. I wish your husband would care more about your feelings. Especially since you DO work so hard. I'm a sahm and homeschooler so I know how much work that is and on top of that, doing all those activities with your kids. You sound like a great mom and are not being treated as one.

iamsogone 10-26-2010 02:09 PM

my singer 401 or my singer sphynx treadle for piecing my ken quilt for quilting
i love my vintage machines

pdtink 10-26-2010 02:19 PM

I have 3 machines--an Elna Supermatic, a Bernina 164QE and a 1950's Featherweight. I love all of my machines. The Bernina is the one I use the most. I travel with the FW and use the Elna for buttonholes.....pretty, pretty buttonholes.

callie 10-26-2010 02:21 PM

I have a Janome 11000 and it is sure a cadillac for embroidering and sewing. My DH always said you get what you pay for and my oh my he is right. My other dream machine would be a long-arm (if I had a place to put it)...LOL. I hope your hubby was not serious - a sewing machine is NOT a luxury - it provides many a gift and keeps us ladies sane. Good luck!

jlm5419 10-26-2010 02:28 PM

I have a picture on my sewing room wall that says "Quilting: Cheaper than Therapy"

Sewing machines are not luxuries. They are necessary tools in a home. My current favorite for piecing is a Singer 301, found at a garage sale, complete in cabinet, for $20.

Right now I have two machines I sew on, the new Bernina 830 and the Bernina Artista 220. One end of the spectrum to the other but the 220 is just right to take to classes and just do regular sewing while I have the 830 busy embroidering. I am very content with the two of them.

cwessel47 10-26-2010 02:46 PM

I only use my featherweight (1936). Have another Singer but it just isn't the same. Me and my baby have gone too many miles together to quit now.

I have an Elna SU that I've had since 1973. that's my only machine. I would like to buy something newer but get lost when I start looking. Quilting or embroidery. I would love to do both, probably more quilting than embroidery but really confused when it comes down to brands. As a kid I learned on a Kenmore which I wish I still owned. Why I bought an Elna in 1973 I don't remember except a lady I use to babysit for had bought one and we always talked sewing. Listening to all of what everyone has to say makes me even more crazier on deciding.

deanna_1 10-26-2010 03:12 PM

To the lady whose hubby said sewing machine is a luxury, how much does he spend on his luxuries?

deanna_1 10-26-2010 03:26 PM

I recently brought "Laura Ashley NX-2000" by Brothers. I am deaf and was having trouble with one machine due to the quietness of the machine. I couldn't even feel if it was messed up. So far, I am getting along good with Laura Ashley machine. The computer would flash on screen if some maintanence needed to be done.

galvestonangel 10-26-2010 03:36 PM

Just took my FW and my Janome 8000 o the shop/ While I was there I started looking at the Janome Horizen, WOW. I bought it! I love it. Love the space and all the bells and whistles. I think I even sew better with it.

Mumzbear 10-26-2010 03:38 PM

Love my Bernina!

a) My Viking Designer SE and b) My VikingDesigner Diamond - but not necessary in that order. I love both of these machines, and switch off between the two.....I do a lot of quilting with embroidery designs and use the Diamond more for that because of the design positioning capability it has.

jitkaau 10-26-2010 03:58 PM

Brother Nouvelle 1500s.

I agree, a sewing machine is a "tool" not a luxury...I knew someone who considered the sewing machine to be a luxury as well. He had golf clubs, a boat, computers, motor bike, movie screen etc and always had enough money for beer....I now have 4 machines and use them all without any feelings of guilt - just wallowing in my 'luxury'...

quiltforfun 10-26-2010 04:13 PM

I have a Janome 9700--use it for piecing, machine quilting, machine embroidery, general sewing, etc. I also have a 20 year old Kenmore portable that is so much lighter than the Janome and I take it to classes, quilt-ins, and working days at my quilting clubs.
I love the Janome--it is a very sturdy machine and does lovely machine embroidery.
I also have an older Kenmore surger that I would never part with.

drgranny 10-26-2010 04:25 PM

My ABM Inova 18" midarm and a 930 Bernina. My Bernina decided it was time for a check up so she went to the shop. Now I am using an old Montgomery Ward machine that was my moms. I got it out and oiled and cleaned it and so that is it till Bernie is home.

Judith 10-26-2010 04:28 PM

I bought my 1471 the same year you did Texas Sunshine. What a great machine. Mine is still going strong and I love it every bit as much now as I did when I first got it. (except for button holes at times!). I just recently bought a Pfaff quilt expression 4 and so far, am loving it. Just machine quilted my first quilt the other day and it went very smoothly. I had always hand quilted up till then but I can see that I may be doing way more machine quilting now.

decky 10-26-2010 04:36 PM

I have a Bernina 830 that I bought in June. It is a great machine and I'm really on a learning curve right now. It does so much that I don't know if I will ever learn everything.

IBQUILTIN 10-26-2010 04:50 PM

Viking Saphire, and I love it love it love it

Did you inform him that eating is a luxury and he won't be getting that for a while?

I agree with you. If this had been one of his favorite power tools you can be sure it would be replaced ASAP!

Blinky 10-26-2010 05:25 PM

I love my Bernina 1230 that I bought used. Don't really see in upgrading because it seems to do everything I need it to do for now. I have a FW that I take to Bees and Classes...love to hear it sew! It's my toy!

butterflyquilter 10-26-2010 05:40 PM

Actually, nothing because he doesn't do anything except sit in his chair when he is off work. Yesterday, he told me I should try to rake leaves for the neighbors for extra money. I could have cheerfully killed him at that moment.

A little magnesium citrate would cure the "sitting in his chair problem". He would then be sitting on his throne.

penski 10-26-2010 05:58 PM

right now i use a sears kenmore that i like but my dream machine is still a dream!!!

Mary M 10-26-2010 06:24 PM

I have a Janome 6600 and a JUki TL98Q and neither is my dream machine. I do like piecing on the Juki better than the Janome. My dream machine would be a Longarm!

Barbj 10-26-2010 07:12 PM

butterfly, you have endless patience! Sounds like your man REALLY knows how to make his woman happy. Jerk. Maybe we should take up a collection and get you a killer cool new machine! I'm in.

To piece I use a Bernina 440QE because it is SO accurate. I LOVE this machine. To quilt I use a Viking Mega-Quilter and the Grace frame made for it.

There is a world of difference between a low end machine and a Bernina or Pfaff. If you have the money to spend I would say you won't regret getting the more expensive machine. My true dream machine is a LA APQS Millenium or a Gammill but both are way out of my price range at the moment. I would love to upgrade myBernina to one with a BSR system.

I have a 14-year old Pfaff 7550 and a new Bernina 440QE. Both are excellant machines and ones I will never give up. I do use the Viking Mega-Quilter and it performs well (also the Viking 936 serger) but I have had lower end machines in the past and they are more work than they are worth. Quality really pays....

grandma sue 10-26-2010 07:40 PM

I love my new Janome Horizon too.

charhend 10-26-2010 07:44 PM

I love my Brother 4500D. I also have the HQ16 longarm quilting machine...Couldn't live without it!

sewnsewer2 10-26-2010 07:49 PM

My Juki TL98Q.

purplefiend 10-26-2010 07:51 PM

I also really like my Pfaff 1222E(about 35 yrs old), it has a built in walking foot, so my piecing comes out right.(as long as I cut everything right) I am the 2nd owner and bought it as I wanted a machine that has the built in walking foot and for machine quilting, the throat is 8". Its a lovely machine, too bad its so heavy; mere 35#. I collect machines, 15 years ago I had only a Bernina 1031. Now I've got about 12 working machines that I cycle through.

Patricia Ann 10-26-2010 08:18 PM

I use a Bernina artista 200/730 for sewing and embroider

SewOK 10-26-2010 08:23 PM

Butterflyquilter -- I'm probably way out of line, but my heart goes out to you for allowing yourself to be treated in this manner by the man that calls himself your husband. You deserve a lot more respect and you should stand up and tell him so. If you have the time, check out a couple of thrift shops or garage sales. You might be surprised at what you might find in the way of a sewing machine.

fabricfairy 10-26-2010 08:33 PM

I just love my BERININA 830 what a dream to sew on.

softpatches 10-26-2010 09:59 PM

When at home I piece with my Janome 6600 and quilt with a brother 1500---At our cabin I use my FW to piece & quilt with my Bernina 930---

drgranny 10-26-2010 11:39 PM

Shortly after I married DH, he told me that there is a tool for every job. He has a bazillion tools and he never denies me MY tools! I never have to remind him of what he said! Your husband needs an attitude adjustment!
