Use whatever colors YOU like.
When I first began quilting I made some appliqued tote bags for a craft sale. "Blue" was in "in" color in the early 80's so that's what I made. I expected to make a killing and didn't sell a single one. Why? "Oh, but it's the wrong shade of blue". |

He used it for 3 years while in high school and took it to college. After college he moved across country and that was his security to "home." The first Christmas he was far across the country and couldn't come home he sent me a gift. It was a shadow box with the corner of his/my first quilt with some sewing needles. thread,a seam ripper and a message that was so heart felt to this day it is my favorite gift I've ever received.

My tip would be step back and look from afar...there is so much to see in a quilt sometimes you just need to look at it from a distance.

The blade doesn't care what it cuts. For instance the tip of my index finger. There is always tomorrow.

One thing I've learned and would like to pass on is this,
SLOWEST IS USUALLY FASTEST. I've only been sewing for about two years now but when I first started I would rush everything, measuring, cutting and sewing. Then I would wonder why as I spent ages using the seam ripper nothing matched up. Mind you, all the undersized blocks and funny shaped triangles added enormously to my scrap pile |
Iron Iron Iron Make sure you iron it makes every thing seem to fit better.And I put my ironing board away from my machine. It makes you get up and move, I used to spend hours sewing and would be stiff ad sore, so i now have to get up and move around, As I get older[ arrrh] I seem to need to make things circulate more than before

DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR SCRAPS!!!
Use them, either in a quilt or as filler for dog beds, cat beds, pin cushions, or other items. Or find someone who will use them. |
