I've started making my son's quilt. And I keep asking my self WHY, a 1,000 times(ha-ha) & cussing up a storm. The red part of this quilt, has Y-seams. Not just 1, but 4 for each block. I think, I've kind of mastered the y-seams now. I have a lot of the red sewed together now. Here's where I need everyone opinion. Do I want to sew the blocks together, or put the lt gray marble or dr gray marble sashing strips. I like the lt marble gray for sashing strips. And to everyone that knows about my lucky penny story. My lt weight singer machine, works like new. It only cost me $75.00 for lubrication, and some adjustments here and there 2 blocks togetherWith the lt gray sashing. The dk gray sashing

I like it with the blocks sewn together -- makes a neat pattern where they meet up. If you are going to do sashing because you need the extra width/length, I'd definitely go with the darker grey to provide more contrast. With the medium grey, it just looks too washed out & some of the pattern gets lost.

NatalieF 05-03-2016 10:47 AM

I like all of them, so I'm no help to you!

Don, I do see a "Y" seam. I would just cut a red rectangle the length and snowball a square light grey on each end and sew it like a HST. It is a very pretty quilt this is going to be. You have a way with match fabric with a pattern. Keep up the excellent work and if you find another featherweight, remember me! :)

Mimi Sews 05-03-2016 10:55 AM

You are doing a great job! I really like the dark gray sashing with the blocks.

What she said.

I like the lt Gray also. This will be a very nice quilt.

Sewn together, the little darker squares almost make an Irish chain effect. I might arrange a few more to see if you like it. I also think the grey strip between them looks nice, completely up to you. It is wonderful that your FW is up and running!

If you used the light gray sashing and added cornerstones it would complete the Irish chain.

Don, judging by the pictures, it's well worth the trouble and your "Y" seems are great! Really like the colors! I like the sashing in the 2nd picture!

barny 05-03-2016 12:05 PM

I love them all. I really like the darker strip.

cjsews 05-03-2016 12:05 PM

I agree with quiltsRfun. Light grey sashing with dark ER cornerstones

jillmc 05-03-2016 12:14 PM

Scarlet and grey...our family's favorite colors! (Go Buckeyes!!!).
I like the blocks without sashing, or light sashing with a dark cornerstone to keep the chain pattern going.
Great quilt! Those y seams are worth every stitch-they are so pretty!

orangeroom 05-03-2016 12:16 PM

Don, I agree with others with regards to light gray w/ corner stones. I also agree with ManiacQuilter and snowballing red rectangles! No Y seams that way!

It looks great so far!

QuiltnNan 05-03-2016 12:42 PM

i like the light gray sashing so the blocks look like they are floating

That's what I think too. Add a darker gray square as a corner post and it would look like an Irish chain.

Geri B 05-03-2016 03:32 PM

Maniacquilter2. My thought exactly...that's how I would do it!

Beautiful blocks! I like the idea of the Irish chain look.

auntdeb 05-03-2016 03:49 PM

I love the dark grey. It really makes the block stand out. Either would be pretty but dark grey for me.

I like this idea!

Gay 05-03-2016 04:39 PM

I too prefer the light grey sashing, also with the dark cornerstones.

You do great work, Don.

rusty quilter 05-03-2016 04:52 PM

i am a fan of the darker sashing!

lynnie 05-03-2016 05:41 PM

the light grey makes almost a secondary design.
Lucky you with the serger. I just paid $200 to get it oiled, cleaned and running new, and now it won't work. it has to go back. What a pain in the butt this will be.

Blue Bell 05-03-2016 07:26 PM

I like the darker gray sashing. It is going to be a spectacular quilt.

Irishrose2 05-03-2016 07:38 PM

I like the secondary patterns that show up with no sashing. If I wanted sashing, it would be the dark with very dark cornerstones to continue the chain pattern.

Mariposa 05-03-2016 07:44 PM

I'd do the darker gray sashing. Nicely done blocks! :)

I agree the dark sashing with corner stones to complete the diagonal lines.

Wanabee Quiltin 05-04-2016 03:08 AM

Personally I like the dark gray sashing. I put my blocks on a design wall and audition the sashing and borders.

JaniceP 05-04-2016 03:50 AM

Your quilt is very nice and I would also prefer the dark grey. It makes the blocks stand out.

Karamarie 05-04-2016 04:09 AM

Either way looks nice - personally, I like the dark sashing.

luci4 05-04-2016 04:38 AM

I actually would like it either way. Great looking quilt.

fivepaws 05-04-2016 05:45 AM

Don, I like them without sashing. That way you have a secondary pattern. Love the colors.

Betty Boop 05-04-2016 05:47 AM

If you want the blocks to stand out, definitely the darker gray. To me it makes the blocks more visible. It's your quilt so make it to suit yourself.

MarleneC 05-04-2016 06:37 AM

Wonderful quilt--I prefer the darker grey and cornerstones would be a great addition.

quiltin-nannie 05-04-2016 06:46 AM

Love the dark gray sashing! You do such beautiful work! How wonderful that everyone in your family will have a quilt made by you!

Bren 05-04-2016 07:15 AM

I like the dark grey sashing. It will be a beautiful, very masculine, quilt. Great colors!

JENNR8R 05-04-2016 07:31 AM

Another vote for the light gray... I think it makes the blocks look like they are floating. Me likey...

southernmema 05-04-2016 07:43 AM

I vote with those who prefer the light gray sashing with cornerstones made from same dark gray in the block. This would give you continuity of the chain. Great work, btw.

klswift 05-04-2016 08:25 AM

Wow, this is really a toss up. The no sashing looks fine, the light grey (my favorite) really develops a nice secondary pattern, but the darker grey sets off the blocks (this is my third choice). I would audition them on a table and note which one grabs my eye every time I walk into the room. If I went with the lighter grey, I would border it with the darker one to frame it out.
