We do charity quilts in our guild for children that are removed from there homes. Every year a Swap Block is done and members wishing to participate join and make and create a block of there choosing using a focus fabric and block is to be 9" finished.
Anyway I used my AccuQuilt dies... 3 1/2" square, 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" retangle, 6 1/2 " square to make my block with. I am going to applique a 2D butterfly to put in the center of the 6 1/2 " square. Attached you will see what fabrics I choose for it and the focus piece is the back of the butterfly. Fabric chosen is from the In The Beginning Fabric line so with the exception of the 3 1/2" square all is from that line. Do y'all think it will be an ok block once I sew it up and applique the butterfly on it? We have to make 26 of the same block design we chose. In September the 25 members that joined will swap one block with each of the other participants and the extra block set the guild will make a quilt out of it. I am very new at quilting so still learning and have alot to learn. |
lovely choice of colours and pattern; good job.
It's a great looking block, you chose good colors and the butterfly is cute. May in Jersey

It looks like it is a happy block! Go with it. The butterfly is adorable !!
Good choices of fabrics and design. I, also, do quilts for kids in out of home placements. I am told they make a huge difference to the kids who get them. Lively and happy are important IMHO.
that is a wonderful block! Nice bright colors.
the colors are great and the butterful is really adorable...go with it..
Nice block, happy colors!
I think it's a FABULOUS block, and you've probably got way more work in yours than the other blocks will have. ;-)
I can't wait to see how YOU decide to put all the blocks together for YOUR quilt. |
Your choice of fabric is great. This block is going to be nice.
Excellent choice of fabrics & colors!!
Great choice! I concur with everyone else.
Great choice, will look very sunny, don't forget to post a block when finished. We all want to see it.
You have a good eye. Trust your self more. The butterfly is beautiful and the colors are just right. What a neat way to use your tools.
very nice....It's great to see how others do their quilt blocks as I am also new to quilting... You seem much farther along in your journey as I have not attempted applique yet...LOL
I like it!!
I think it looks great! The colors are perfect and will make an incredible quilt!

Actually because I am new at quilting I first thought to make a basic rail fence block, than I changed my mind and instead made a basic 9 patch block attached here. However as y'all know by this thread I started I made a different design as shown above. Sorry this sample one isn't ironed. I had it put in a zipply bag with cut fabric to do 25 of these but changed my mind to do the butterfly one instead. I still will use the rest of those fabrics in some fashion and use them in a quilt somehow.
Although I have ideas to create 3 or 4 more designs so far I like this butterfly one and most likely what I'll run with for the Swap. I prefer applique than I do piecing but I am starting to like pieceing some. |

I wouldn't be surprised if your block is the standout in the whole batch.
As for your piecing, aside from the ironing ;-) , it looks great - all the pieces are aligning perfectly. Just watch the 1/4" seam line. There is a tendency to wander at the beginning and the ends of the seam line (I can see your stitch holes). If I'm not concentrating, I do it also. Love, love the butterfly. |
Stick with the butterfly - Its more in line with a childrens/youth quilt that will grow with them!!! Love the block. Want to see quilt when you are done. thanks for sharing cheryl
It's a great cheerful looking block - go for it

I was just checking what was posted and saw that you like applique. That is my favorite. What method do you like?

I'm new at applique as well and love to use alot of different dies to cut them with unless I have no choice and have to cut with scissors. I'd have to say machine applique but will do others as well. |
Thank you for replying to me

Ok guys and gals.
I just finished cutting for 30 blocks, allowing 4 extra one's in case I mess up. Anyway I just got through putting it on my design wall just to see what it would look like minus the butterfly applique. Have to do that next week or will start sometime end of next week. Photo did not come out as good as I wanted it to, not as bright looking in the photo as it really is. I realize these 25 blocks will be swapped with others in the guild but just wanted to see what it would look like all together. I'm seriously thinking of making me a quilt with this block if I can get more fabric to do so. I may even consider putting a solid color block every other one I have here. I have a ton of batiks which I believe would work good with it. Just a matter of sorting through it all and finding batiks that would complement this block. Carol |
That's a wonderful project. What a gift to a precious little children who gets removed from his or her home through no fault of their own. Blessings to you.
I love this colorful, beautiful block :D:D:D
I love the butterfly but the fabric in the lower right with the black and white swirls keeps pulling my eye away.
I think it is awesome. Can just picture it in my mind all finished and wonderfully warm and snuggly.....

Ok here is what I have changed. I started cutting the applique for the butterfly using the Tim Holtz die. Since I wanted the focus fabric to pop more I decided not to put the upper cut layer. Kids will love it this way I believe. I haven't stitched around the butterfly yet but will later on.
Attached are a couple photo's of what it hopefully will look like once sewn in with the other blocks. I'm still thinking of making one for myself if I can find other fabrics to match and have a mixture in the quilt. |
The butterfly is adorable. It is a wonderful block!
Of course
Very nice! Love the Butterfly!
A lovely cheery block you have designed and some happy child will love it.
I love it! I think it is cheerful and hopeful. Excellent choices.
oh yea great at least I like it
Looks good to me! I like the butterfly. I think it's great that y'all do this for these kids. Some are removed with little or nothing to call their own.
On a side note: I want to find a local group that makes duffle (or whatever they're called) bags for the same kids. |
That is a very HAPPY quilt for some lucky kid who surely needs to have something to smile about - GREAT JOB !!!
