Opinions for my star borders, please

I saw the banded star here on the QB and wanted to make a wall hanging for my door when I move next week. I decided on a scrappy piano key border. However, I can't decide whether to have no narrow inner border or to have red or navy. I'll be binding it in the color of the inner border if you think I should add one. Or which color binding do you think would be better... red or navy? Thanks for your help.

Hi nan,
From where I sit the navy blue looks great!

Nammie to 7 06-27-2014 06:20 AM

The navy brings out the blue in the star too. Nice block!

feline fanatic 06-27-2014 06:25 AM

Another vote for the Navy. The red seems to differentiate away from your PK border too much and make it seem like an afterthought IMHO.

SharonTheriault 06-27-2014 06:29 AM

The blue! Makes the inside of the star pop.

Billi 06-27-2014 06:41 AM

Oh no question about it for me I was immediately drawn to the navy.

jo bauer 06-27-2014 06:54 AM

The navy really pops the blocks

The red inner border looks best to me, more cohesive. The outer binding could be red also.

I totally agree with this.

I said "navy" to myself until I saw the pictures. Then I decided that the navy "drabbed it down"

Normabeth 06-27-2014 07:17 AM

I like the blue border best, it brings our the blue stripe fabric in the star, Is this paper pieced?

QuiltE 06-27-2014 07:40 AM

It looks like you just have the 1/4" beyond the star points.
My suggestion would be to first add a white border.
Then the navy .... the red pulls your eye away from the centre star and it really should be the shining glory.
The binding, I'd audition when I got to that point ... my thoughts right now, are to stick with the navy for the same reason.

Terri D. 06-27-2014 07:46 AM

My vote is for the blue.

QuiltnNan 06-27-2014 08:24 AM

thanks so much, everyone. i'm always drawn to red. but all of your reasons for the blue have swayed me in that direction.

i guess the pattern goes by several names. it IS paper pieced. here's a link to one of the many patterns for this https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxW-...WQz/edit?pli=1

Seldom do we agree on questions of this type, must be right. I vote for the navy, too.

the star had almost 1/2" seam allowance, so i wasn't going to add more white. but i decided to take your advice. i'm glad i did... it floats so much better. and i'm so thrilled that everyone talked me into the blue,.,. i LOVE it. right now, the glue basting is drying.

thanks again.

Luv Quilts and Cats 06-27-2014 02:12 PM

I like the navy.

Jeanne S 06-27-2014 02:29 PM

I like the navy border as it draws out the center blue print. Very nice!!

suern3 06-27-2014 02:32 PM

That looks perfect!

sewbeadit 06-27-2014 03:05 PM

I like the red and outer border red as well, red red red.

Thanks QuiltnNan ... I'm glad it worked out for you, and that you are not cursing me for the idea. I just hate blocks that have their points touching right to a sashing. While not chopped off, they are just "too close to the edge" for me. The blue "makes" us see the star!!! Look forward to seeing it finished and that you can enjoy it in your new home.

lfletcher 06-28-2014 05:41 AM

I like the red. I agree with the person who said the navy dulls the colors of the quilt. I think the red brightens it. It's going to be a lovely quilt!

youngduncan 06-29-2014 02:56 AM

I vote for the blue. I think it makes a nicer break between your star and the piano key border. Also, the blue makes the reds in the star and border seem a little more alive.

teacherbailey 06-29-2014 03:05 AM

Navy, definitely!

117becca 06-29-2014 03:07 AM

i like the red. it adds cohesiveness. Don't overthink it - which one did you immediately like?

nls 06-29-2014 03:40 AM

The navy frames it nicely.

Geri B 06-29-2014 04:04 AM

Miter the corners of the piano key border

jkaczor19 06-29-2014 04:23 AM

Love your blocks and the piano key border. Nice work! I also like the navy.

I agree with this. It's a beautiful star.

omacookie 06-29-2014 05:06 AM

Navy..
Best for a door decoration.

tezell0801 06-29-2014 05:23 AM

I like the red the best - it pops to me. nice wall hanging to - love it.

BettyGee 06-29-2014 05:27 AM

Well I must be nuts, but I would like the red.

quiltmom04 06-29-2014 05:28 AM

I think I might use a white inner border to give the stars more of an effect of "floating". The red is ok, but I think the blue just gets absorbed into the pieced border. Love the stars !

sewbizgirl 06-29-2014 05:54 AM

I'm glad you decided to go with the navy border. Looks great. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the piano key border! Makes the quilt, in my opinion! :)

jeanneb52 06-29-2014 06:15 AM

Narrow red,red binding

cpcarolyn 06-29-2014 06:23 AM

I vote for the red.

canuckninepatch 06-29-2014 06:29 AM

I vote for navy.....my second choice is no narrow border at all.

MargeD 06-29-2014 08:12 AM

I think I like the navy border best, but it's a very pretty block.

red-warrior 06-29-2014 09:02 AM

I like the red inner for sure but maybe the navy binding?

Mariah 06-29-2014 11:15 AM

Another vote for the Navy! Should be beautiful when all done.
Maria
