My crazy quilt-my way.
Very nice!
I think that you did a very nice job with your selections and execution of your stitching. I might have used a darker fabric such as black for the sashing instead of the gold/tan fabric. But that is minor and if your happy with your work, I am certainly not going to go against your choices.
Very pretty! I think I would cut 1 inch black sashing to go between the squares. I find a narrow sash that ends up being 1/2 inch wide, gives the intricate blocks a place for all their seam allowances to go into the sashing. The small sashing also end up feeling the same weight as the fancy squares because of the seam allowances meeting under the sashing. Black narrow sashing would make your fancy blocks look like stain glass windows. Of course that is just my opinion and you may have a different idea to finish them.:)
oh i like the black sashing idea. Will definitly take that into consideration. Thanks!
There is no sashing in between the squares yet. That is my table.

I think you have done a nice job on your blocks. Many times people add bits of lace and doilies -- but each crazy quilt is what the maker wants it to be! I've been collecting vintage embroidery -- I want to use those pieces somewhere in the crazy quilt pieces. How big are you going to make your quilt? Are you going to use sashing? Borders? How the heck are you going to quilt it?
I really like it!!

I agree with the black sashing. :) your blocks are lovely. :)
My Mom made a crazy quilt this way. Of course her blocks were the size of cloth diapers which she used as batting.
I never found out where that quilt ended up after my parents divorced. You did an excellent job on yours. I really like it. |
In the olden days, women would use lace, ribbons, buttons, jewelry, and beads on their crazy quilts. However, those quilts were not used on the beds. They would lay them over a couch or use as a wall hanging. I have lots of scraps so im not worried about size , but would like it to be queen possibly. Yes i think i will use black sashing as was suggested above. Haven't planned the borders yet. This quilt is one that is in progress without any planning ahead. I just grab scraps and fit together like a puzzle , using decorative stitching that is on my machine. As for the quilting part, well guess i'll cross that bridge when i get to it. Im not one into the fancy quilting since i don't have a machine to do that, but i'll figure something out as time goes by. Am definitely open for suggestions on that.

I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree, a thin sashing would set it off.
This is lovely!
I would like to do a crazy quilt someday. I love the way your blocks turned out. In looking at them, and thinking about how to quilt it, I think I will try to do my quilt as you go. That way once you join them with sashing, it would be done and all the lovely decorative stitching would be the quilting you've already done. Great job on what you've done!
I recognize some of those fabrics! You have done a beautiful job on the blocks. The black sashing would make the blocks look amazing!
I love it  . . . and really got some chuckles, over the comments regarding your 'sashing!' :D :D :D
so pretty!!! I liked the "gold" lol... but they are right, a dark sashing will allow each block to "shine"
Very pretty! Good job.
you might try tying the quilt, in the corners of the blocks in the sashing, using the same color thread as the sashing.
Great job, it is very pretty.
Love the stitching!
I love it! I would not put sashing on; it interrupts the flow and interrupts the crazy. Google images of crazy quilt and you can compare although there are not that many with sashing. Here is one with sashing that manages to keep the crazy in crazy quilt. http://periwinklequiltingandbeyond.b.../02/crazy.html
If you don't add sashing at all you can add bits and pieces here and there to make it look like one single piece of piecing.
Oooh, I like it.
I love the idea of black sashing....also all kinds of lace, buttons, and ribbons would look great.
Looks great! Now you need a solid color to border the blocks to really make them shine. I would go with a dark green batik, but not too dark. You seem to have lots of greens in your blocks so I think green to frame them would be nice. Just read one of the comments in the thread. Is that hardwood floor under the blocks in the photos or fabric?
Good Job! I would say your way is a great way. I vote no sashing.
I love it. It looks like it is fun to work on.
I need to get my eyes checked.
I thought you were using tan or gold sashing at first too. I like the looks of it. Black would be good too. I like the idea of a narrow sashing between the blocks. It adds just a bit of order to all the craziness of the blocks. Whatever you decide it's going to look great when you're done. Rodney |
I think its beautiful and I agree a small sashing would look awesome.

*** Nice job. ***
by all means go for the black, it will set it off, very nice job on the blocks. very pretty
The blocks are laid out on top of my dining room table.
I like the idea of the very small black sashing Then I would tie it with embroidery thread and put a 1/2 binding on it with the black sashing fabric.
It's very nice! Nothing better than doing it your way!
I agree that a narrow black sashing would set off your lovely blocks.
Quilting? hmmmmmm ..... as another poster suggested, how 'bout quilt as you go. I'd add additional rows of fancy stitches to quilt the layers together. Add the sashing, sew the blocks together, then add fancy stitches to the sashings. ..... or ..... if you don't want to quilt as you go, you could add the sashings, sew the blocks together, sandwich, (maybe stitch in the ditch around each block), then quilt by adding extra rows of fancy stitches inside the blocks and fancy stitches in the sashings. In any case, it's a beautiful, useable Crazy Quilt! :) |
If you want to see how a narrow dark sashing would look, you can check out my quasi-crazy quilt posting from last summer:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...y-t222232.html It is made with QAYG attachment of blocks, resulting in a 1/2" finished sash. I like the idea of black sashing and considered using it, but my eyes have trouble with black. The dark purple was a little easier for me. Your decorative stitching is beautiful -- I wish I had that capability on my vintage machines. |
I reeally like that alot. Its not too much sashing which i feel woudkl maybe take away from teh crazy look. thx for sharing.
I love it!! Beautiful!!
It's so interesting to look at! You have some unique pieces in your blocks, and I love the stitching you've used. I think the suggestion of the black sashing will give it a rich finished look.
