I have file cabinets under my cutting tables to store my smaller fabrics in. Have done that for several years. I just ruler folded mine and lined them up in the drawers. Here are some old pics I found to show what I have done.

Great idea. I love thinking "outside the box".

fktsewing 02-21-2011 04:58 AM

never thought of that, but used the same concept for my magazines---just open them at the center and and hang them over the file folder---can see the front cover and can browse through much quicker. Plus they are put away and kept dust free.

Neat Idea! Thanks

FranM 02-21-2011 05:08 AM

OK, I have to ask. How did you fold the fabric to go in the folders?

pieces 02-21-2011 05:19 AM

Quilters are great at repurposing/recycling items.

cindyg19 02-21-2011 05:20 AM

Did you decoupage the pictures to the front of the file cabinet? I think this idea is brilliant. So creative. thank your sister.

And I have a file cabinet I can use and the file folders. Did you prime the cabinet before painting? brush, roller, or spray?

steelecg 02-21-2011 05:40 AM

Fantastic idea - I need to borrow your sister for about a week and you to - nice work

supergma 02-21-2011 06:01 AM

You, my dear quilting friend, are a genius! I love how you decorated the front of the drawers. I have a large double wide cabinet with the top drawer designated for patterns and 3 drawers filled with misc. I think I am about to throw out the junk and move it to the sewing room. Thanks so much for the idea.

quilter68 02-21-2011 06:09 AM

Wonderful idea!

Chrys 02-21-2011 06:17 AM

that's a really great idea!!!!

Para722 02-21-2011 06:32 AM

What a great idea. I had to downsize and I think I'll be on the hunt for a file cabinet. Thanks for the info.

BettyM 02-21-2011 06:59 AM

Great idea!

quiltaroni 02-21-2011 07:01 AM

You can attach comic book boards to the file folders for acid free protection?.

QuiltQtrs 02-21-2011 07:05 AM

So clever .... and creative as to the drawer fronts

joyce888 02-21-2011 07:12 AM

Thanks for the idea. I saw a large filing cabinet a few weeks back at Habitat for Humanity and didn't get it because I couldn't come up with a good excuse (that my DH would agree) to get it. I'm going back and hope I'm not too late.....Bye

craftymatt2 02-21-2011 07:19 AM

Great idea, thanks for sharing

sassey 02-21-2011 07:45 AM

Wow I love your idea

debbieumphress 02-21-2011 07:47 AM

Sending hubby to the big barn to get those filing cabinets this morning. And I am making room for them in my room. I am goign to put acid free paper in the files too. But my fabrics usually get used fast. So happy you posted this.

Susanna10 02-21-2011 07:48 AM

I have an old file cabinet. I am going to go dig it out. Thank you for the suggestion.

Gatormom3 02-21-2011 07:51 AM

If you paint your metal file cabinet - use Rustoleum (sp) it comes in lots of colors - it paints and primes at the same time. Prevents rust - covers beautifully

quiltsyl 02-21-2011 07:58 AM

I use filing cabinets, but I have wound the fabric on boards gotten free from JoAnns. They fit perfectly in a legal size filing cabinet. However, I like the idea of using the pendaflex folders and I have a ton of those. Hello re-reorganization. Thanks for sharing.

Great Idea !!!!!

grammysews4u 02-21-2011 08:33 AM

what a good idea!!

kittykatz2001 02-21-2011 09:08 AM

That is a wonderful idea. One of my quilting sisters that has been wanting to clean her quilt room has some file cabinets. I have offered my services to help but, it's been 2 years since I offered and she keeps putting it off. I sent her the photos in hopes of a little push!!

I did use Rustoleum, but I also bought Rustoleum primer because my cabinet had quite a bit of rust! I even had to sand it down...

dltaylor 02-21-2011 09:35 AM

Wow that's a great idea!!

Lostn51 02-21-2011 09:39 AM

OMG!!!! She should patent that idea because that is the neatest thing I have ever seen!!! I am adding 1600sqft to my studio and I am going to get my quilting area back! But I have all of this material in bins and bags (chest of drawers) you name it and there is no rhyme or reason for the filing system I used. I am looking for the ideal way of organizing the fabric and this is right up there with the best!!!!!

Billy

jojosnana 02-21-2011 09:43 AM

You are so smart.......that is just so clever and I have never seen it anywhere before........

Goodie, Goodie! I feel like I've gained back my storage closet!

Matilda 02-21-2011 10:08 AM

WHat a great idea!!

brookemarie19 02-21-2011 10:38 AM

Haha!!!! I just got this in a email! I have been searching all over for filing cabinets and even have dh looking for me when he is out and about. I love this idea. Thanks for sharing

Peggyinno 02-21-2011 10:42 AM

What a clever idea  I would NEVER have thought of that!!

frog90 02-21-2011 10:50 AM

I had seen this before and when seeing it again here I got to thinking. I got out my old two drawer file cabinet. Cut off the file part just up to the fold over part you know where it is glued on and has the little cutouts. This will keep most of the card stock off your fabric. I also took the card stock off to show all metal hang strip then you will have two hangers. I cut a strip of sewable bond the kind that is more like fabric than paper and ironed it on the metal strip this will not fall off like acid free paper and I would think it is acid free as it is sometime used as a fabric stiffener that you leave in when you sew. I also think you can use a fabric strip and spry tack it on.

also leaving on the small part of card stock on the top will let you leave some with nothing on them and keep the tabs in to mark what the fabric is for, you have 5 1/2 half yards together and one empty with the tab saying what you plan to use the 5 previous hanger filled bars. I guess you could even use a plastic file folder between projects with the pattern it it.

Hope this makes some sense to you all. I will try to post some pictures later of what I am talking about.

frog90 02-21-2011 10:53 AM

You may want to also keep the card stock you cut off for temp lets as it is very stiff.
