Cut off the file part just up to the fold over part you know where it is glued on and has the little cutouts. This will keep most of the card stock off your fabric. I also took the card stock off to show all metal hang strip then you will have two hangers. I cut a strip of sewable bond the kind that is more like fabric than paper and ironed it on the metal strip this will not fall off like acid free paper and I would think it is acid free as it is sometime used as a fabric stiffener that you leave in when you sew. I also think you can use a fabric strip and spry tack it on.
also leaving on the small part of card stock on the top will let you leave some with nothing on them and keep the tabs in to mark what the fabric is for, you have 5 1/2 half yards together and one empty with the tab saying what you plan to use the 5 previous hanger filled bars. I guess you could even use a plastic file folder between projects with the pattern it it. Hope this makes some sense to you all. I will try to post some pictures later of what I am talking about. |

Here is what I am starting so you may see what I was talking about. I have not posted a picture yet so I hope this goes well.

Oh my Goodness, what a great idea, I went to Office Depot and bought clear plastic file boxes that are stackable.By the way they are buy 2 get one free. I organized my projects including the fat quarters and book or instructions. I can see what fabric I have and can choose the colors without digging through a bag. Thanks:)

Dimensions - Size 7 1/4 x 10 *Certified Acid Free - Independent Lab Tested 200 Boards per Pack for $11.00 Keep in mind these are far too flimsy (only 10 Mil) to fold fabric onto, but they will cover the green cardboard of file hangers so the fabric can be safely draped over the metal bars and would be a great application here. You could cut the green folder from the fold to about 5" even and fold the comic board over the top... maybe add a bit of spray adhesive or glue stick to affix them to the remaining green cardboard. Just remember to tape them to fit lengthwise, but keep the tape on the underside to protect fabric from even the tape. They sell them here: http://www.bcwsupplies.com/products/...-extenders.htm |
When we moved to the apt. I was really in trouble for fabric space. Hubby was driving past a yard sale and spotted a 4-drawer file cabinet. Got it for $2.50. Boy does it hold a lot of fabric. Since then I have had to find space for the stacked see-thru drawers and now am going to get some more. This has got to end sometime. Don't bank on it. LOL Marge L

I have to say I love it

Nice!!!!
Great idea and I love how you re-did the file cabinet.
A niffty idea!
What a very cool idea! Love the way you fixed the fronts of the drawers, pretty and functional.
you could also use the file cabinets for your monthly magazines, instead of taking up space on shelves.
Like the idea - but I have a question - in the hanging filing folders - do you have the fabrics folded or on cardboard? How does the fabric stay so straight? In a hanging folder, I would think the fabric would fall. Just curious, because I have some file drawers I can re-purpose.

Janice Maroni.......nice car.....

Great idea!

I use a file cabinet to file my quilt magazines. They are filed by subscription and date into magazine holers and laid into the cabinet so the spines show. Easy to find a pattern if you know the issue and magazine that put it out. (If you remember to place the issue in the cabinet after reading it when it comes.)LOL
Love the idea. I also love what you did on the front of the file cabinet.
The cabinet is beautiful. Are those decals or did you paint that cabinet?
What a neat idea!! I think I should try that!
Can you show us how you folded the material around the files thanks
I have used the filing cabinets for cross stitch patterns...works great.
please post pictures
Love this tip Thanks!
Verrrry clever! I have a lot of hanging folders left and two file cabinets left over from the classroom. This will be a great use for them. And to think I was going to give them away...
Genius!!
