Yes you need to do just that. That is what our quilting club here in town did. Our local WM closed out their fabric line last spring we really tried everything to get them to keep it but to no avail others in town who did use the dept for reg. sewing and local teachers for classrooms tried to keep it open as well. They were the only source of fabric within a 80-90 mile radius for us and others in small communites around. Now they carry precut yard or so , no fat quarters, very little batting and other sewing or quilting supplies. We emailed and even called headquarters, but got the same answer they just couldn't justify keeping it because of inventory and couldn't pay someone to stay in the dept all the time. There were three ladies that were always in that dept. or close by to help. After the remodel, they have a lot of junk all over the store. They did away with a lot of their inventory, not just fabric, and it looks like a lot of their craft and party stuff that took care of the fabric dept. just isn't selling, as well as a lot of their other things that they brought in. We basically have NO other place to shop in our town except there. We had quite a few good places until WM came in and they all closed. I do like some of their stuff and have to trade there, but have been very dissatisfied about the fabric going, as is everone else. We live so far from any place to really shop living in far West Texas. As I stated nearest place to do much is 80 miles away North and East, and 200 West to El Paso, nothing to the South of us until you get down near San Antonio.Good Luck hope you can keep yours. We all (quilting group) bought them out practically when they were closing out the dept.

I just went to the Walmart site:
http://walmartstores.com/contactus/feedback.aspx
I chose "Company feedback and questions" and asked them to get the fabric back. How about we get a few thousand of us to do that?

cosyquilter 01-09-2011 07:47 PM

Out of 7 WM within 1 hour of me, 3 still have nice fabric departments. The one closest to me carries 4 models of sewing machines and a half dozen or so pre-cuts. That's it. This is a newer store, maybe 5-8 years old...used to have a very nice fabric section. We only have one very small lqs in our town, a JoAnne's in the next town-20 minutes away. Hobby Lobby is maybe 45 minutes away. I do a LOT of online shopping for fabric.

garysgal 01-09-2011 07:53 PM

Ours is remodeling and they are telling all of us that the fabric dept. is staying.

donnalynett 01-09-2011 09:12 PM

Our WalMart quit carrying fabric a couple of years ago. I tried the WalMart at Woodburn while visiting there and they no longer have fabric either. I can drive about 5 hours one way to Klamath Falls and their WalMart has a huge fabric dept. I live in Coos Bay, OR

I just sent my request to them. Donna, Coos Bay, Or

We have 3 walmarts in our town, and one is keeping fabric and brought some new stuff in last week.

donnalynett 01-10-2011 08:00 AM

I received a response to my email to WalMart. They feel the need for more craft items out weighs our desire of fabrics and will not be bringing back the fabric. Donna, Coos Bay, OR

Ours is actually getting more fabric in every week. They have so much they have to put it in shopping carts now. The lady at the cutting counter told me it was because we all wrote in. Plus, we don't have any Joanns, Hancock's, etc. within a 90-mile drive.

Ann S. 01-10-2011 08:27 AM

Well, I did it. Went to our Cairo, GA Walmart yesterday to find out what time fabric would go on sale today at 75% off. Was told some ladies would be there at midnight and it would be a zoo. Decided to wait until 8:00am this morning and was the only one at the cutting table. Bought 32 different pieces of fabric, some for stash, some for borders and some for backing. Most expensive was 1.49/yard. Spent $89 but have definitely expanded my stash....now to the washer...

Naturalmama 01-10-2011 08:43 AM

Thanks for the link - I just sent msgs to both corporate and our local store. I wish I knew when the sale was going to start. I doubt they'll listen to my pleas.

You can get a petition started or go right to the manager
and voice your concerns, someone did in our area, because
we don't have any sewing/material places within 10 miles,
so they ended up keeping the fabric. Good Luck...It can
be done.

There were petitions started on this group as well as the internet. This subject was brought up a few months back. I am sure you can research it

Get as many friends as you can to go to their site and give feedback.

Found out just before Christmas that our Walmart will keep their fabric dept but it will be smaller.

TexasGurl 01-10-2011 11:35 AM

The WM near me all closed out their fabric dept. when they remodeled 2-3 yrs ago ... all they've had since are a few flimsy fat 1/4's & precuts. They just have more junky crafts & kids stuff.
Now that the scrapbooking craze is fading, maybe ?? they'll REALIZE that sewers & quilters bought a LOT of fabrics & notions there ...

It seems there are a lot of us concerned about this- I think we may need to organize an effort to give Wal-mart the message that the public wants the fabric dept. I would think Wal-mart is in the business to make money- our voices should count for something.

My daughter lives in Asheville too. She Is not happy about the fabric either.I did not like the pre-cuts they had.

Then why are they putting fabric back into several of the stores? They put it back into two of the stores in North Alabama.

They took the fabric out of our wal-mart 2 years ago and replaced it with electronics. We really miss it in our area. The nearest fabric shop is 30mi round trip

ljgraham 01-11-2011 08:21 AM

I shop in Show Low as well. I am glad they kept it too. Still quite small though

Our store was remodeled--they originally said they were closing the fabric dept. After 3,000 calls to the manager we have a very nice and large fabric dept. The problem so far is that don't keep it stocked---batting shelves have been empty for 6 weeks now. Hmmmmm?

sistermadge 01-23-2011 03:52 PM

I'm very puzzled. For months we heard that W'mart was discontinuing fabric . . . taking out of stores that were being remodeled etc. Then a few months ago, there were many posts saying that W'mart had experienced losses etc. and had also considered the many pleas of customers to retain their fabric departments and had decided to leave the fabrics in the stores it was still in and to be included in future remodeling plans. Also that it would eventually be put back in those from which it had been taken. One hardly knows what to think. We still have fabric in ours . . . however, the quality it greatly variable, and not necessarily by the way it's priced. The "hand" on it is quite different from bolt to bolt. I still occasionally buy a piece there, but unless they carried a full better line have to say I wouldn't miss it that much.

Welcome to my world they have 5 Walmarts in our area. One the largest never carried fabric - another was remodeled 2 yrs ago - lost their fabric, third was remodeled this yr - fabric gone (brought back fat quarters only)- The one I go to all the time has been having clearance sales on their fabric - nothing much is left - they will start remodeling in a couple of months - The last one has tons of fabric - is about 30 miles (one way) from our house. Since my DH thinks that going 5 miles some place is a distance - we don't usually go up that way much -

joey 01-24-2011 05:29 PM

I just some shopping in the Shreveport , LA walmart on I20 and have reduced pricing on thier fabric. I asked and the lady said they were remodeling and will discontinue fabric at this store in March....so I don't think Walmart is bring back fabric to any of their stores they have taken them away from....maybe precut pieces!
