I just talked to the fabric lady tonight and it's official. They will be remodeling Feb/Mar and the fabric will be gone. I hope I can find a little $$ to stock up before then! Some of it is horrible, but some of it is very nice...

sewwhat85 01-07-2011 09:45 PM

i worked on the remodel crew and it is our understanding that all fabric depts will go out with the new remodel within the next 5 years

DebraK 01-07-2011 09:47 PM

it might be a little scary, but you can still find some great bargains online. please don't despair.

Not here! They remodeled a couple of years ago and we still have fabric, plus they're getting more. It's over stocked.

quiltjoey 01-07-2011 09:48 PM

Our also in Summerville and Charleston, SC. Oh, Tuesy, where are you located that yours aren't closing?

madamekelly 01-07-2011 10:38 PM

We are getting ours back and upgraded. Complain to the home office in Arkansas. I did, (And many others on here) and it worked!

gale 01-07-2011 10:50 PM

Ours doesn't have fabric anymore. They closed around october because they put up a new supercenter, but they quit having fabric a few months before that. Now they have fat quarters only.

geckogirl 01-07-2011 11:39 PM

Several of the remodeled stores still carry fabric it is just precut for fun projects ... No ideal for quilters but still fun :)

I am sorry for your loss though ...

S D G 01-08-2011 03:27 AM

Our local store remolded 2 yrs. ago and we still have a fabric department, not as big as before but still there.

carolaug 01-08-2011 03:31 AM

They remolded ours too...we still have a fairly good size fabric area but not a big as it use to be. When ever I go there is only one or two customers there...when I go to Joanne's which is right down the street its packed. The local quilting shops also always have more people shopping for fabric than in Walmart. I like how they have fabric to help other shops keep their prices reasonable.

Diana Lynne 01-08-2011 03:38 AM

Our fabric dept in Goose Creek SC is still up and running..I hope it continues..

CarrieAnne 01-08-2011 05:25 AM

Ours is going out too!

Mpark 01-08-2011 11:59 AM

I found out this week that ours is going in June or July.

amma 01-08-2011 12:53 PM

So sorry to hear this :(

Stormy Days 01-09-2011 04:16 AM

Just before our Walmart closed their fabric section, they put all of the fabric on huge discount. Try to find out when they are actually closing and go then. You can really stock up and save a ton of money.

barb's works in progress 01-09-2011 05:59 AM

Our Walmart has also remodled and taken the fabric out. But, a quilter said that enough quilters have contacted Walmart and were told due to all the response, material will be put back in the store. We'll see!! Store in Rockdale, Texas sti has fabric. My sister in law works there and said they are sell so much fabric.

quilter in the making 01-09-2011 06:49 AM

Our local Walmart lost it's fabric about 2 years ago. Haven't heard if they'll be getting it back or not, but doesn't seem like they will. :(

I live in AZ and our walmart remodeled and kept a fabric dept. It is far smaller then we had, one aisle both sides and some barrells with bolts or other fabrics. We have a cutting table, but, I notice more fabric that would be used for kids patterns. Ours was probably kept because there is no real place to get fabric other then to travel 50 miles or more and we have both a school (home economics) and a reservation that buy lots of fabric from walmart.
I also just returned from our holiday travels, visiting family and Tyler, Texas Walmart still has fabric as does Brownfield, TX

Ann S. 01-09-2011 08:24 AM

Our Walmart in Cairo, Georgia is closing out the fabric department :( Fabric tomorrow is reduced to 75% off. Guess where I will be tomorrow morning?

hperttula123 01-09-2011 08:38 AM

Ours is remodeled and has fabric....not very much, but at least it kept it.

Kathy T. 01-09-2011 08:57 AM

The one in Oldsmar, FL (close to Clearwater, FL) is going out of fabric right now. It was 50% off last week and will be 70% off this week. I was picky last week and bought the best stuff because they sell out fast at 70% off and I wanted to stock up on tone on tones that were a nice weight and not take a chance to miss out.

qnana 01-09-2011 09:09 AM

Only dinky packages left in Charlottesville, VA after remodeling.

blueangel 01-09-2011 09:38 AM

Our Walmart has lots of fabric and getting lots more in. The lady said she thought all the Walmarts were going to get their fabric back.

elseebee 01-09-2011 10:16 AM

When they built a new Super Wal-mart in Asheville,NC a couple of years ago, folks from the smaller store that was closing raised such a fuss that the new one got a fabric department (small, but still it's something). But a clerk there told me that when they re-model that store after 5 years, it will lose the fabric, too. It seems there are a lot of us concerned about this- I think we may need to organize an effort to give Wal-mart the message that the public wants the fabric dept. I would think Wal-mart is in the business to make money- our voices should count for something.

damaquilts 01-09-2011 11:15 AM

All the ones I know of in Ga and the one down the street ffrom me here doesn't have fabric. I wonder if it makes any difference if the quilters/sewists not shopping there makes all that much difference to them. I know I don't go into Walmart anywhere near as much as I use to when they had fabric & not only would I get fabric but I always got other stuff too. Before I left Ga I had started going to the local grocery it was just quicker. And cheaper for me anyway.Didn't see so many things that I just "needed" on the spur of the moment

gwparrish97 01-09-2011 12:32 PM

I'm not sure how old the previous posts were, but appx 1 1/2 to 2 years ago, two new Walmarts were built in our town (one replaced an old Walmart) and neither of them have fabric. In fact, the craft sections in both are terrible. Before the old one was closed, I sent an email to their corporate office and told them how I felt about it. Most likely there were others who complained, too, because there are two more older ones that still have fabric and continue to get new supplies. All four of these stores are within a ten-mile radius of me. It never hurts to let your voice be heard.

barb's works in progress 01-09-2011 02:00 PM

Yes, I think we do need to let Walmart know how we feel.

sewmom 01-09-2011 04:01 PM

the lady in our Walmart fabric department told me this week that it looked like they got to keep their fabric for another year. Don't know how true it is b/c rumors fly you know.

NanaSue 01-09-2011 04:42 PM

Was at our wal-mart in central PA today and they had 3 hugh cart fulls of new cotton fabric and didn't know where to put them. But the second Wal-mart in the same town doesn't carry Fabric???

Linda Irene 01-09-2011 04:59 PM

I live in West Bend, Wi . I sure hope it isn't our Wal Mart who is getting rid of there fabric!!!!!!

craftymatt2 01-09-2011 05:09 PM

That would be a great way to stash up

CarrieAnne 01-09-2011 05:15 PM

Ive called the 1-800 many times and asked them not to take ours, and its still leaving!

At least you have a Jo-Ann's or a Hancock. On the western slopeof Colorado we don't have that luxury. One of the Wal Marts took out the fabric and the other is tiny now compared to what it used to be. Our Jo-Ann's went out stating the lease on the Mall store was going to raise, and with a promise of a new Jo-Ann's.. Pfffftttttt.... Oh well guess when I go to see the grands in SLC, UT or go to Denver to see the other daughter, I will have to shop Jo-Ann's as well as Hancock's.

Unfortunately Walmart has closed their fabric departments in 3 of their stores near me. I pitched a fit, but didn't change anything. The Walmart closest to me has only stampbooking stuff. One good thing that came from their closing, I was able to stock up on fabric, batting, etc.
