I have nothing to add. Seems like more suggestions than I could come up with.

Storm at sea was discussed in another message. Another thing that comes to mind is heart appliques. They could be done on a white background. Or any pieced heart block. One that would be pretty is the Norwegian heart that has a red and white 9 patch block for the square part. Remember to wash the red fabric multiple times until it stops bleeding, before piecing the quilt.

I like the idea of a Friendship Star. It's simple and very good looking.

Hunter's Star is pretty in red and white.

2 colors? Hunter's Star. Defintely Hunter's Star.

How about a "redwork" quilt? Make blocks from things she likes or likes to do...horses, skating, etc. (Just a couple of ideas).

Much depends on your grand-daughters tastes too...do they lean toward traditional, shabby chic, vintage, modern? That's important to know bc you want the duvet to reflect her style as much as possible.

I vote for red and white in what ever pattern you like. I have a antique quilt my greatgrandmother made in red and white and I just love it.
