Ok, so I bought 10 fabrics that I fell in love with. They are varying shades of purples and blues. 1.5 yards each. I want to make a king size quilt for my bed but I want the sides long enough to look more like a bespread. My mattress and box spring is really thick and this is going to have to be a really wide quilt!
The top I would like to piece somehow - the sides I could use wide strips length-wise and be happy. I don't want the top to be too intricate - cutting fabric into tiny pieces (anything less than 3") and then sewing it back together - not my thing. I do want something interesting tho. I just haven't been able to decide on a specific pattern yet. So I'm looking for suggestions. I'm still pretty new at quilting and I am still working on perfecting my 1/4" seams and squaring up, etc. So the less tiny stuff I have to do, the better. This is a project that is going to be awhile in the making as I have several other projects I want to get done. I also think I'm going to have to incorporate lighter colors, either white, or cream, into the pattern but I'd rather not I think. I don't know! I just knew I had to have this fabric for the bed. LOL Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have. Martha |
I had done a color wash Irish chain that called for 10 fabrics.

maybe make a carpenters star in the middle with a bunch of 6" squares around it. when you make it really large it will be easier to work with. the points on the star i would do in the lavender and the two lightest blues and then use the two darker purples and the blues around it. I would then use the last two pinky purples on the back. they are more of a hot color than a cool color. but that is just me. hope this helps.

How about a Turning 20?
|
I agree a log cabin would be great!
PM me if you need a pattern. |
i have pretty much the same idea of about 10 fabrics in a french braid.
French braids look gorgeous with the different gradient colors |
Gorgeous fabrics! I can understand that you want to use them to their best advantage.
|
I think a french braid or a Bargello would be nice.
Great fabrics!! |
I'd take a look at the free online pattern Wild Orchids by Northcott, (www.northcott.com). The pattern is in the archived section under the pattern button and is by Jean Ann Wright. It's an easy but very striking design and I have just finished two of these quilts just using purples of every shade and hue. The original pattern is smaller but I just made more block units, each block unit being 18 1/2". The queen sized one I made I used 4X5 blocks before borders and the king sized 5X5 which was 90X90 before borders. This quilt would be just as great using all of your fabrics and is very easy to stitch and quick to cut if you lay the cut strips and rectangles in piles as you go. Happy stitching!

WOW! I didn't realize there'd be so many choices! Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to research all of the ones mentioned. I know basically what a log cabin is but haven't done one. I will go see what everyone else talked about.
THANKS! You guys are all the greatest! |
I love those Kaufman Fusions!!! I have it in so many different colors and have used it in most of my quilts!!!!

I just finished a quilt for my son and daughter-in-law. I found the pattern at Hoffman.com (free), and I needed 10 fabrics. I fell in love with the Batik fabrics, and when I ordered them on line, the store asked me to send a picture when I was done because they couldn't figure out what I was making with all these colors. It turned out pretty cute I think, and not as busy as it may look.

I think a bargello would be beautiful with those fabrics. They are wonderful.
|
I love the fabrics you are going to use. No matter what pattern you chose it will be pretty
|
Log Cabin is one of my fabric patterns!
|
KLgreen - that is a beautiful quilt! As my four-year-old would say, I love it very much!

Swirly Girls has a pattern designed for 10 fatquarters.
It's called Perfect 10 www.swirlygirls.com |

I made a beautiful quilt for my bed out of 3 1/2" squares, I measured from where I wanted it to fall on my bed with all the covers on the bed and went from there.

Bargello--do a google search for bargello! rusty
|
Bargello would be nice, but I haven't done one before....and not sure I want to attack one for a king size bed.
The photos are beautiful. Thanks for sharing! Thank you to everyone - all great ideas. Still researching. |
There is a Funquilts pattern that I kept from a quilt magazine called American Patchwork and Quilting from Feb 2010. The pattern is called Band Together and was done in many shades of blue that I think would look gorgeous with your fabric. I think you might find it on AllPeopleQuilt.com

A french braid would be great for these fabrics. It is pretty easy too.
|
mlaceruby...I would like the pattern for making your avatar. I love it! Thanks for using it.

Thank you, but they haven't received it yet. I have to get it boxed and mailed. But they have seen pictures. I have two in the works for my DGD too, will post them when finished.

Eleanor Burns Quick Trip Quilts are fast and easy. I love doing them.

Blank quilting has a log cabin type called Illusion that would be perfect for these fabrics. I made one like it, just had it long armed and it is beautiiful and very bright, (my preferred types.) Karen Combs also has some neat patterns like that you may like.
|
Any quilt in the Turning Twenty series would be great. I can see that fabric made up into the Stained Glass quilt.
|
Check out the Blank free pattern called 'Shades Cascade' to use with gradated color fabrics.

Good luck in chosing a pattern. Both log cabin and a braid would be marvelous!

there's a pattern called a Puzzle Quilt - a type of stack and whack, but it's very easy, uses I think 12 fabrics that you cut out all at the same time; your fabrics would be gorgeous in this pattern.

LOVE THE PICTURES OF THE CATS, AND RABBIT. I HAVE A WESTIE THAT WHEN I SPREAD A QUILT ON THE BED FOR A PICTURE, SHE'S RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF IT. MY PROBLEM, I HAVE MY PICTURES ON MY DIGITAL BUT CAN NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME GET THEM ON THE COMPUTER WERE I CAN FIND THEM. DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING WRONG. BUT, REALLY LOVE YOUR PICTURES. THANKS FOR SHARING

Love your color choices! Good luck in finding a pattern. A hint about getting an even 1/4" seam: Put a pack or half a pack of extra sticky post-its parallel to your 1/4" seam line. Allow the seams of what you are sewing to side along the post-it. You will not have to watch the seam and it should be even the length of the fabric.
You can also place layer after layer of narrow masking tape to make a wall to slide your fabric along the line of masking tape. |
THANKS FOR THE 1/4 ' HINT......SOUNDS LIKE A WINNER
