I know many of us use paypal, and I have never had an issue with them at all. But I did this morning receive an email from them. Instead of clicking on the link that was provided I called them instead. This email is one of those that is trying to get your information. I do not understand completely how its done, but I do know enough not to click on links. I just wanted to warn everyone here, because I know some might click on it, and the scammers would get your info. Here is a copy of the email that I received:

Quote:

I got the same email about 2 weeks ago. I just deleted it. Paypal has the information it needs from me so I assumed it was a scam. I didn't think to report it here, but I think it is a good thing to do. Thanks!

Your first clue was the "Dear PayPal Member" salutation.

If you've got a PP account, they know your name and use it in every single piece of correspondence. Same for eBay.

But I wouldn't click on those even if it had my name.
I always sign into the site/account from a new browser window.

Glad you didn't get snagged either.

bearisgray 08-28-2011 06:12 AM

you can also forward the e-mail to PayPal at the following address:

Stitchnripper 08-28-2011 06:18 AM

Oh yes, good advice. I get these scammy things from people pretending to be my bank too. I never open anything like that.

LoriEl 08-28-2011 06:28 AM

I had one a few weeks ago similar to that but for AOL. It said to do the same thing or my AOL account would be deleted in 24 hrs of my reading the e-mail. I deleted the e-mail and did NOT lose my AOL account.

I was soooo dumb once and fell for that because I had a hard time finding the info on PayPal about what to do. The e-mail looked so real to me - and even the spelling and grammar was good in it!

Finally found a phone number the next day and called PayPal and the PayPal person said CANCEL THAT CARD AT ONCE and get a new one.

Maureen 08-28-2011 07:06 AM

I got a similar one too, I deleted it.

craftybear 08-28-2011 07:08 AM

thanks for the heads up as we all have to be careful online

traumaRN 08-28-2011 07:21 AM

Amythyst, thanks for the heads up. Love your avitar. Cutest puppy I've seen in a long time. What type of breed is it?

susie-susie-susie 08-28-2011 07:36 AM

Thanks for the heads up. I never open anything unless I recognize the sender. If something is important--to save my "fortunes" they will call me or send me a letter. Otherwise, they have all my information. Thanks for the reminder.
Sue

nativetexan 08-28-2011 07:47 AM

yep, one reason i quit using them yrs ago.
if i buy something that has paypal, my purchase goes through there but i don't have an account myself any longer.

snipforfun 08-28-2011 07:56 AM

I got a similar one from hotmail.

Jazzz 08-28-2011 08:55 AM

Gee thanks for the heads up. I just started with paypal and not sure how I would have handled this. I got my first Nigeria email re $900,000 - that was a little more obvious lol.

KarenR 08-28-2011 08:57 AM

Thanks

marknfran 08-28-2011 08:59 AM

Thanks for the reminder; I have received them in the past, too.

I got that same email this week.
I wanted to send it to Paypal's pfishing alert but couldn't find an email address so I just deleted it without clicking on ANYTHING within the bogus email.
Thanks for the warning. Even cynical people like me who never open an email unless I recognize who it's from could easily make a mistake.

Chele 08-28-2011 09:48 AM

Usually SPAM messages are littered with typos, but that one was pretty good. I did catch the English usage of apologise versus the American usage (apologize) in the message. PayPal is a US company, so that was one tip off. PayPal never sends e-mails with links like that anyway. They're all SPAM. Forward them to [email protected]

Thank you...she is my sweetie. She is a Westiepoo, 1/2 west highland white terrier and 1/2 poodle. To be honest I wanted a pure west highland, but discovered they were a bit above my price range. I actually found mine on the internet, and fell in love with her at first picture. She was only around 4 weeks old when I saw the first pictures of her. She was shipped to me via airplane when she was 8 weeks old and she is my best friend. She is more like the west highland than poodle, temperment and all. She is a joy to have around. lol, she is at my feet right now, snoozing. Anyway I am glad you enjoy my avatar... :-D I have had several PM's asking about her. :D

the casual quilter 08-28-2011 11:41 AM

Thanks so much for taking the time to send the warning.

This scam has been around for awhile - but you are correct - everyone be aware - you should never click on a link and provide any information about your account. It is too easy for these scammers to hide who they really are.

blueangel 08-28-2011 05:27 PM

Thanks

lonestardreams 08-28-2011 06:10 PM

I get those every now and then. From sites other than PayPal (supposedly) as well. I try to report them. Never give your password or account number.

Thank you for the reminder.

always report it by forwarding it to [email protected]
this way they can block that address from sending out more.

lynn_z 08-28-2011 08:36 PM

If you receive a suspicious email or "click on here"...don't click. You can wipe out your whole system if the wrong person gets your click. You can forward it to spoof @paypal.com or [email protected] (ebay owns paypal) and they will confirm authenticity for you.

floridaflower 08-28-2011 08:39 PM

Thanks for the information

4girlsmimi 08-28-2011 08:44 PM

Thanks for the info. Glad you were cautious!

cindy4857 08-28-2011 08:52 PM

I get them quite often, they are phursing (pronounced fishing)and I didn't spell it right but it's close. Anyhow it is scary thinking someone else might not be so careful, I send them to [email protected] and delete it right away because I'm scared it might contain computer eating viruses and stuff. It's a strange world out there and I can't believe how some people think and what they can think of. Sometimes I really wonder if we've done ourselves any favors with all the tech. today. Although without it I couldn't be chatting with you all and seeing all the beautiful art work you all do. Guess it's a catch 22 and most times I'm happy I have it available to me.

cindy4857 08-28-2011 08:55 PM

oppps forgot to say If it starts out with Dear Sir, instead of the name that's on the paypal account you know it's not from paypal they always address all emails to the account holder not a blanket sir or her :-)

hspirit_99 08-28-2011 09:28 PM

i got one simular to that one also. i sent the email with full headers to paypal. i learned long ago not to click on anything that just doesnt seem right.

thanks for posting this

bjrusty 08-29-2011 02:13 AM

I don't have a pay-pal account, use money orders and never buy with credit cards on the web. I knew this could happen.Barb
