Good Afternoon All,

At a recent retreat I was told I should always get extra fabric and make a pillowcase to store my new quilt in. So when giving it as a gift, have a card with the instructions for how to wash it and then indicate it should be rolled and put back in the pillowcase, etc....

So I was out looking for a tutorial on HOW to machine a pillowcase and found this tutorial from the Missouri Star Quilt Company on Youtube....and all I can say is.......IT'S GENUS....COMPLETELY GENUS! :)

I was kind intimidated because I have only ever made quilt tops, no other sewing under my belt, and the thought of hems and things scare me. This COMPLETELY my seed. You only have to sew along 3 lines and you get a gorgeous pillowcase!!!

I know I know....you are thinking I'm posting too many videos as of late. Sorry about that, but I thought this is a great watch for people who wanted to make a pillowcase, but thought it would be difficult to attempt.

I love this method of making a pillowcase. Found it myself about a month ago.

loves_2_quilt 08-04-2011 11:31 AM

I like to make a pillowcase when giving as a gift and use it as the wrapping.

valsma 08-04-2011 11:32 AM

That is just to simple and so cute. Thanks for sharing. Where was that when I was makinig a bed set for my grand-daughter?

no1jan 08-04-2011 11:32 AM

I have always heard the same thing about making a pillowcase for your quilts. Unfortunately, I haven't always done it.

Thanks for posting!

Michael, Thanks, great tute. Will definitely try this one. Also like the Million Pillowcase Challenge & will do a few.

fabric_fancy 08-04-2011 11:41 AM

this might be a silly question but if you're supposed to roll the quilt for storage wouldn't you make a tube instead of a rectangle?

AFQSinc 08-04-2011 12:20 PM

Great link! I will definitely be making a few of these.

They are WAY easy to do and if you make it - you can make it the correct size (no need to be just pillowcase size).

TinkerQuilts 08-04-2011 12:33 PM

Very handy, Definitely worth bookmarking!!!

Thanks Michael,
great tutorial, but now you just added one more thing to my to do list. :)

debbieumphress 08-04-2011 12:39 PM

When I enter a quilt for a how we put them in pillow cases so it's easy to fold and have ready for us to pick up. Labels on it too. Might have to make a case to go with my gift quilts. Good idea. Love your videos. Thank you.

LOL....not silly. I'm just going off of what was communicated to me. But they also said you should take them out and refold them every 2 months or so...

I'm not an expert on this one. I was ALSO told to was them in a a specific detergent that you can get from any Farm Supply store, because it really gentle of your quilt...but the name of that eludes me right now.

Hmmm.....this this would be a good thing to talk about and get a tut going for it. :P

I think you are talking about *Orvis* horse shampoo, it is a paste and extremely gentle.

Thanks for the link Michael! Keep those links coming, I really appreciate not having to do the "tute surfing". I know if you post it, IT'S GOOD!!

I havae been making pillowcases to store my quilts in for a long time now. Usually I have enough fabric left from the project, even if I have to piece it. By the way , the French seam looks really nice, or you can also serge the seam to finish. And another good part to this is when your quilts are stored at a glance you can tell which quilt is which , without unfolding and having to refold.

lovedquilts 08-05-2011 04:13 AM

that was great, I am like you, I only do quilts but I am definetly going to make some of these. Thank you for sharing.

Jennifer22206 08-05-2011 04:20 AM

I love doing pillow cases to match the quilt. :) Been doing that for years. Love that tutorial too. I just kinda winged it the first few.

nannya54 08-05-2011 04:29 AM

This is a slick way on making pillow cases. I have a friend with a surger so after I sew the header on, she surges them finished and we donate them to CASA for the children having to leave their homes and going into the foster care system. Sometimes they have no warning so leave with nothing. CASA gives them a "backpack" full of toiletries, etc and I thought a pillow case that they can keep would be nice too. CASA is thrilled with that idea.

grannypat7925 08-05-2011 05:00 AM

Love this tutorial. I made a bunch of these for gifts last Christmas. The kids loved them. So quick and easy for me!

dltaylor 08-05-2011 05:04 AM

great idea!!

Steady Stiching 08-05-2011 05:13 AM

Pillowcases make such a lovely gift. I love this method.
I go one more step and take my edge joining foot and top stitch very close to the seam where the cuff meets the pillowcase body. This way when its washed it lays flat without having to iron.

lonestardreams 08-05-2011 05:15 AM

I have used this tutorial to make pillowcases and really like it- very easy. It makes sense to make a pillowcase to store a quilt. Your post reminded me that I need to make some of these for Christmas gifts- need to get started soon.
