Actually my favorite cushion I made is not attractive at all but I love it. I covered a 7 x 7 piece of styrafoam (sic) covered it with some batting and I have a great pin cushion always on hand. Especially good for the round tip quilting pins and never gets lost in the mess I make when sewing. I also have one for the regular pins.

I make wrist band pin cushions so I can keep track of it. I had a habit of setting every were and spending time finding them.

ok, how organized is your pincusion......does each type of pin have it's place......do barely used machine needles have a designated spot complete with number(11,14,16)are all the butterflys together, big yellow ball tops together,can you grab the exact pin or needle or big eye sewing needle ( for buring threads ) with hardly a glance. tell me i am not the only one with this obsession. a well organized pin cousion is a great helper

Foam pin cushions. You can make it any size you like. I have one also for needles etc. It is larger but I have ribbon pinned sections using different colored ribbon for each type of pins I want to keep at hand. Loads of options on this. Can grab any type I want to. ps, every now and then I pull out all of the "caught" threads resting on the cushion. Not sure how they get there but I like it.

I recently found a "needle" cushion made by Singer at WalMart for under $2. It is similar to a tomato in size and shape, but it is divided into 6 sections for various types of MACHINE needles. You can rename the sections for the types of needles you use. Each section is then subdivided into hours used. I find I am more likely to used "the right needle for the job", when I can just pop it into the correct section of a pin cushion, rather than having to try to mark and find some way to save it and then find it again.

I have a rolled wool one that I LOVE! The lanolin in the wool really helps the pins slide in and out wonderfully. They're about $15, which put me off for a while, but once I invested in it, I wouldn't go back to tomato.
