where did you get your pincushion(s). i want something beyond the "tomato" pincushion. Something cool looking. Do they sell nice ones at the quilting shows? I can't find one I want on-line and will likely be going to a large quilt show in September so I hope they have some there. What is your favorite pin cushion?

The thread catcher pincushion is my favorite. It's really easy to make.
I make Ball mason jar pincushions to sell, these are very easy to make too. I don't like the tomato one either. |
I like my handmade ones best too. Just search here for photos of pincushions or google and look for patterns or ideas. There are as many different pincushions as sewers. Some of us just can't stop making them! Good luck!

Does anyone have a pattern for the thread catcher / pincushion that they'd be willing to share?
|
Google thread catcher pincushion and there are a couple of tuts on them.
|
I found a vintage pin cushion on ebay in the shape of a body sewing form on a metal stand...Love it...
Also have a Teapot shaped one that also holdx loose safety pins inside...And I just found a vintage stuff lady with a porcelain head made by Avon in 1986 while antiquing... If you go on ebay under vintage pincushions you'll find some interesting ones better then new. |

Here are some great links for pincushions...such a variety and so pretty...
http://tipnut.com/wrist-pincushions/ http://tipnut.com/free-teacup-saucer...hion-patterns/ I love this one. http://www.craftpassion.com/2010/07/...n-30-ways.html This site has lots of pretty pincushions. |
I personally like the magnetic ones. I can just pitch the pins and they go right into the bowl!!
|
Great links. I am looking for just a pincushion as I only want to use it for needle turn applique. I have accepted that I can quilt but cannot make anything beyond a quilt. I have tried handbags, animal towels (towels with hoods), that cute simplicity pattern for the "apron" around a mug for storing quilting items (if you had seen the results, you would have died laughing).
Hence I am looking for one to purchase. I have seen some cute ones. I am going to look at the quilt show to buy one. |

Thanks!

If you are really convinced that you can't make one ( I think you're short selling yourself though), Fons and Porter has a cool "flower" shaped one that you can get at Joanns.
|
Actually my favorite cushion I made is not attractive at all but I love it. I covered a 7 x 7 piece of styrafoam (sic) covered it with some batting and I have a great pin cushion always on hand. Especially good for the round tip quilting pins and never gets lost in the mess I make when sewing. I also have one for the regular pins.
|
I make wrist band pin cushions so I can keep track of it. I had a habit of setting every were and spending time finding them.
|
ok, how organized is your pincusion......does each type of pin have it's place......do barely used machine needles have a designated spot complete with number(11,14,16)are all the butterflys together, big yellow ball tops together, can you grab the exact pin or needle or big eye sewing needle ( for buring threads ) with hardly a glance. tell me i am not the only one with this obsession. a well organized pin cousion is a great helper
|
my only must have, honest

Foam pin cushions. You can make it any size you like. I have one also for needles etc. It is larger but I have ribbon pinned sections using different colored ribbon for each type of pins I want to keep at hand. Loads of options on this. Can grab any type I want to. ps, every now and then I pull out all of the "caught" threads resting on the cushion. Not sure how they get there but I like it.

I make these and sell them a lot.
Cookie Hat Pincushions, my pattern. |
I recently found a "needle" cushion made by Singer at WalMart for under $2. It is similar to a tomato in size and shape, but it is divided into 6 sections for various types of MACHINE needles. You can rename the sections for the types of needles you use. Each section is then subdivided into hours used. I find I am more likely to used "the right needle for the job", when I can just pop it into the correct section of a pin cushion, rather than having to try to mark and find some way to save it and then find it again.

Cookie, yours are adorable!
|
I have a rolled wool one that I LOVE! The lanolin in the wool really helps the pins slide in and out wonderfully. They're about $15, which put me off for a while, but once I invested in it, I wouldn't go back to tomato.
|
I have three lovely ones that I got at the wood show. One is shaped like a round, wooden box and when you take the lid off, it has a red velvet pin cushion on the base.Another is housed in a huon pine wooden cup. The last one is a little mound sitting on top of a wooden stand. It looks very Victorian era in style.
|
I like my handmade ones. I take my kid's ceramic pots they made in grade/middle school and add a tightly wadded up piece of batting that is covered in fabric to match the pot. I tie yarn around the opening and close it up. That goes into the bottom of the pot. I make sure this is larger than the pot opening so it fits snuggly down into the pot. I take the large pearl tipped pins from the bridal section in hobby stores and tuck down around the sides of the pt and edge of the fabric. Holds the 'ball' in the pot. Never had one pop out yet. Will never get rid of those pots (kids don't want them for some reason) so I put them to very good use. I also use teacups and saucers and do the same thing. Can't have enough pincushions.
|
I still like my chicken pincushion.Connie in CO

I was at the Sewing Expo in Cleveland, Oh this March and they had those magnetic cups for the auto mechanics and using these to put the pins in. I bought 2 small ones at Harbour freight and it works great.

My DMIL made a Slice of Cake pincushion for me a couple of years ago.
It is by far the one I love and use the most! I do have a thread-catcher cushion as well.. but it usually just hangs on the side of my sewing table for threads. I don't really recall ever using the pincushion part. Also, I use a small "Tomato" type cushion for needles only. It hangs from my pegboard at my sewing table... it is easy to reach.
