Tell Grandma to plant her own garden?

GrandmaNewt 05-20-2015 11:55 AM

Are you implying that muttering cuss words under your breath and sticking the pricked finger in your mouth is not a cure?

Chester the bunny 05-20-2015 11:57 AM

There are a couple of tips here
http://www.blockcentral.com/tips-healthy.shtml

From soaking your fingers in alcohol to using Preparation H
Good luck!

you all crack me up!!
i'll go to the hints page, thanks

For any small wounds, I find putting a little polyporin cream on before bed helps. It usually takes a couple of days for my finger tips to recover when I am hand quilting.

feline fanatic 05-20-2015 12:46 PM

I like using these instead of a thimble:

dab the tips of your beat- up fingers with a coUple of layers of "new-skin liquid bandage." If you get one of those flexible plastic thimbles with the metal tip,and wear it several hours a day, after 2 or 3 days,it won't feel so weird to use one for stitching.

ManiacQuilter2 05-20-2015 01:27 PM

Well, chuckle at this Lynnie. The same thing happens to me but I use that stuff in the green metal box called Bag Balm. If it is good enough for cow's utter, it works on my pricked fingers too. :)

Onebyone 05-20-2015 01:54 PM

I use Bag Balm for all scratches, bites, and pricks. It's great for dry skin too.

bakermom 05-20-2015 01:59 PM

If you are looking to protect your fingers, use a piece of adhesive tape on them in place of a thimble. That's what the ladies I grew up around used. I still do-works better than a thimble for me.

When I hand quilt, I have a few days of pin pricks, but then I get a sort of callous and it doesn't hurt as much. :)

lynnie 05-20-2015 02:31 PM

my fingers never callous, they just get pricked more. just finished the 3/4" hex
and started this the next day.

question on the alcohol. do I use rum or vodka??????

Whatever is the cheapest that you only keep on hand in case company comes.

tammydquilts 05-20-2015 05:08 PM

I too use the new skin liquid bandage. When hand quilting, I put it on my fingers before starting.

Vodka. That way you can pass off the "I use it instead of Best Press" and get away with it...

This may sound a little crazy..but there is a cream called Udder Balm..it was for cows to begin with for sore..chapped udders..but people found out how well it works ..so u can buy it most places..anyway u can around here..after I am done sewing hexes I use it..takes the soreness away..it also take the burn out burns..

I just love these little thing use them lots . Cathy

Sisty88 05-21-2015 04:40 AM

I use "udderly smooth", which is another cow's udder cream. I only tend to use it at night, but it definitely helps my poor finger to heal faster!

If I'm having a really bad day and am poking my finger more than I'd like then I use the " new skin" liquid plaster. It does help to protect it, but with every prick it starts getting loose, so I don't always use it, as it can be a bit of a pain to use!

I haven't done my hexies for a little while so my finger is looking all fresh again, but I know that it's going to go straight back to its horrible state as soon as I start up again!

Aurora 05-21-2015 05:51 AM

I was always told to suck the blood out of the pin prick and it would not hurt. I know it sounds sort of gross, but it works. No, it is not enough blood to turn you into a Vampire!

Jordan 05-21-2015 05:58 AM

I usually just put a band-aid on my finger with the padding of the band-aid on the sore part of my finger. I use "Working Hands" hand cream by O'Keefe every night and this helps the cracking of my skin too. This also helps the cracking of the skin by my nails that I get as I wash my hands many times a day. I really swear by this cream.

P-BurgKay 05-21-2015 06:09 AM

Lynnie, try carmex lip balm, I use it all the time, I hand quilt, my index finger on my left hand has a callus on it from being pricked, this is

BettyB 05-21-2015 06:19 AM

lynnie when my fingers get like that from hand quilting I put Super Glue on the sore area. Let it dry real good and keep on working.

SuziSew 05-21-2015 06:39 AM

Lynnie, I had problems finding a thimble that worked for me when I came across one that is open sided and adjustable and I love using it. It's not too tight around my finger and stays on well. I've also had a lot of luck with the leather thimbles especially the ones that stretch over your knuckle so it doesn't fall off.

DOTTYMO 05-21-2015 07:57 AM

Those sticky things you can buy for rulers or as thimbles not sure of name .

personally I have false nails put on and use them to push the needle through the fabric and the other hand nail stops needle going too far. So far no holes.

SouthPStitches 05-21-2015 08:21 AM

Lynnie, I absolutely cannot sew with a thimble. It takes a week or so for my finger tips to callous up. Any kind of "bag balm" found in a feed store and maybe even WalMart will take the sting right out. Also, have had good luck with Aquaphor ointment made by Eucerin I believe. In CT, there are little adhesive, reuseable dots that you can buy. Can't say I've ever tried them but might be worth looking in to.00000

Ooooooh - I use these too and didn't know Walmart had them. Thanks for posting this. If I wore a thimble every day for the rest of my life I would never be able to use it. I've tried every kind you can imagine. The leather dots are the only thing that works for me.

The only remedy I have for sore fingers is just don't get stuck in the first place. Seems nothing helps except time. I use the dots when doing hand embroidery too.

carolynjo 05-21-2015 04:03 PM

Have you tried using the plastic tape vets use to keep pets from chewing at a wound? It is impervious to needle sticks and is not bulky.

Oh my! do cows "over your way" utter? What on earth do they say??:D

just joan 05-22-2015 03:46 AM

I bought these for my daughter who dose counted cross stitch and see love them.

#1piecemaker 05-22-2015 03:58 AM

I use rubbing achohol before going to bed. Takes the soreness out until you get more the next day.

ghostrider 05-22-2015 04:46 AM

I, too, use Thimblepads, the little leather stick on thingies. Love 'em.

For healing, try something called Crack Care. It's heals cracked fingers in a matter of a day or two and stops the pain almost immediately. It should easily heal pin/needle pricks overnight and without the sloppy mess of Bag Balm. The stuff is truly amazing and a small container lasts a long, long time because you use just a little bit and it works so fast. It's well worth the price.

sewbizgirl 05-22-2015 04:55 AM

Try a drop of superglue on your fingertips before you poke them! Let it dry well. You can peel it off later...

LITTLEOLDME 05-22-2015 07:25 AM

I have a leather finger cover instead of a thimble.

dmarina 05-22-2015 11:11 AM

New Skin. I use it all the time

Mamia 05-23-2015 02:33 PM

Have you tried the leather thimble? I can't use a metal one but the leather one is a finger saver for me, especially the one that fits over the end of your finger.

It takes a little practice and determination to learn how to use a thimble but I would keep trying. That is, unless, you have an extensive vocabulary as suggested above.

The only cure I know is to stop sewing for a while...I have the same problem with thimbles and have found nothing works except to let the fingers rest.

Either one works. It won't make your hands heal any quicker, but you won't care!

FroggyinTexas 05-25-2015 07:13 PM

When you are sorting papers, there are finger tips you can put on to help pick up the individual papers. I use those on the finger/s most likely to be pricked when I am doing handwork. And I don't understand how anyone can sew without a thimble! froggyintexas
